As the Senate prepares to debate immigration this week, Farm Worker Association of Florida ( http://www.farmworkers.org), United Farm Workers (http://www.ufw.org), and Farm Worker Self Help ( http://www.fshflorida.org) in conjunction with the Coalition for Comprehensive Immigration Reform and Church Leader (To be Determined) , will hold a prayer vigil in front of the U.S. Senator Mel Martinez’ District Office on Friday, May 11th at 5:00 p.m. In anticipation of Mother’s Day, this vigil will join the faith and immigration communities in prayer and solidarity with immigrant families to support humane immigration reform which includes AgJOBS. The sponsoring organizations of this vigil and 20 participants will call on Senator Martinez to join them in support of this much needed and urgent legislation.
With a round of immigration raids breaking up families, and with advocates of comprehensive immigration reform increasingly concerned that family immigration is not getting equal consideration in the debate, the faith community is raising its voice and demanding that workable, comprehensive immigration reform get passed this year. This event is part of an array of interfaith voices across the country in a celebration of “Faith and Family” Week. Interfaith leaders will be holding events like this around the country, culminating in a candlelight vigil in Lafayette Park on Mother’s Day in Washington, DC.
