More than half of respondents reported debts over <span class=\"xn-money\">$5,000<\/span>. Almost 15 percent of those reported debts of more than <span class=\"xn-money\">$25,000<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It doesn&#8217;t matter how much you earn; couples will fight about money. It doesn&#8217;t matter how much you have, divorce will cost you money,&#8221; says Debt.com president <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3499277-1&amp;h=2201466134&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Fin%2Fdonsilvestri%2F&amp;a=Don+Silvestri\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"xn-person\">Don Silvestri<\/span><\/a>. &#8220;We already knew this from our years of helping Americans get out of debt, but those high numbers were a little surprising \u2013 and depressing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Also, remarkable was how divorce <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3499277-1&amp;h=450165316&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.divorcemag.com%2Farticles%2Fdivorce-can-affect-your-credit-score&amp;a=affects+credit+scores\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">affects credit scores<\/a>. Just over 32 percent of respondents said their credit scores dropped by more than 50 points \u2013 the most popular response. While another 13 percent saw a decrease of 50 points or less, fully 20 percent saw no change.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Divorce can take such an emotional, mental, and financial toll that many people going through it don&#8217;t think about ancillary issues such as credit scores,&#8221; says <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3499277-1&amp;h=4019652098&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.divorcemag.com%2Fabout-us&amp;a=Diana+Shepherd+(CDFA%C2%AE)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"xn-person\">Diana Shepherd<\/span> (CDFA\u00ae)<\/a>, <i>Divorce Magazine<\/i>&#8216;s Co-Founder and Editorial Director. &#8220;Unfortunately, you really need a high score post-divorce \u2013 to secure a new place to live, new credit cards, or even a new vehicle. A low credit score can mean higher interest rates, which will sap even more of your limited financial resources.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Respondents ranged in age from Gen Z (18-29 years old) to Baby Boomers (60-plus), with a nearly even split between genders and income levels ranging from under <span class=\"xn-money\">$10,000<\/span> to over <span class=\"xn-money\">$200,000<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Other results:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Just over <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3499277-1&amp;h=324941058&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.debt.com%2Fnews%2Fdivorce-and-debt-responsibility%2F&amp;a=40+percent+shared+a+debt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">40 percent shared a debt<\/a> with their former spouse that&#8217;s now theirs alone.
