Second Prize Winner, <b><span class=\"xn-person\">Dennis Perez<\/span>, <\/b>of <span class=\"xn-location\">Tampa, Florida<\/span>, was awarded <span class=\"xn-money\">$1,000<\/span> and production equipment valued at <span class=\"xn-money\">$1,000<\/span> to finance and produce a web series of three, two-minute videos for CreateTV.com. Distributed and produced by APT, The WNET Group and GBH Boston, Create\u00ae is a national channel carried by 241 local public television stations and features the best of public television&#8217;s content in the genres of food, travel, home &amp; garden, arts &amp; crafts, fitness and lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>Judging the Create Cooking Challenge, which ran <span class=\"xn-chron\">March 8<\/span> \u2013April 5, was a panel of some of public television&#8217;s most recognized hosts: <span class=\"xn-person\">Kevin Belton<\/span> (<i><span class=\"xn-person\">Kevin Belton&#8217;s<\/span> Cookin&#8217; <span class=\"xn-location\">Louisiana<\/span>), <\/i><span class=\"xn-person\">Pati Jinich<\/span> (<i>Pati&#8217;s Mexican Table), <\/i><span class=\"xn-person\">Diane Kochilas<\/span> (<i>My Greek Table<\/i>), <span class=\"xn-person\">Nick Stellino<\/span> (<i>Storytellers in the Kitchen), <\/i>and <span class=\"xn-person\">Martin Yan<\/span> (<i><span class=\"xn-person\">Yan Can Cook<\/span>!)<\/i>. Entrants&#8217; online submissions included a short (two minutes or less), original video featuring their recipe&#8217;s preparation, a brief narrative about the origins of their recipe, the full recipe and a photo of the finished dish. Judging criteria\u00a0included demonstrated culinary knowledge, presentation skills, telegenic appeal, unique ideas and production values. This year&#8217;s entrants presented multi-generational recipes originating from more than 25 different countries and cultural traditions, as well as American-grown recipes representing nearly 35 regions of the country. The winners&#8217; recipes, as well as many select entries and some shared by the judges will appear in Create&#8217;s new <i>Heritage Recipe Collection<\/i> at CreateTV.com.<\/p>\n<p><b>Grand Prize Winner, <span class=\"xn-person\">Adam Lambay<\/span><br \/><\/b>There was\u00a0never any\u00a0question in Adam\u00a0Lambay&#8217;s mind that he would someday be a chef. In fact, when Adam was\u00a0about\u00a010 years old, he told his mother he wanted to be &#8220;one of those guys in a white coat.&#8221; She thought he meant he wanted to be a doctor.\u00a0He quickly corrected\u00a0her saying, &#8220;No! I want to be a chef!&#8221;\u00a0His\u00a0early\u00a0goal<\/p>\n<p><i>Page 2 Create Cooking Challenge Winners Announced<br \/><\/i>clearly set, Adam&#8217;s dream never changed. His entire career has been dedicated to\u00a0culinary arts, and today he is executive chef at the Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark, with a storied resume of positions at\u00a0high-end\u00a0restaurants throughout <span class=\"xn-location\">Greater St. Louis<\/span> and the surrounding area.<\/p>\n<p>A native of <span class=\"xn-location\">St. Louis<\/span>, Adam only left\u00a0his hometown\u00a0once to attend culinary school in <span class=\"xn-location\">Louisville, Kentucky<\/span>. Upon graduation, he returned to <span class=\"xn-location\">St. Louis<\/span>, the community he loves,\u00a0and where he plays a vibrant role as a chef, cooking instructor,\u00a0and busy husband and father to two children. Adam&#8217;s family has lived in\u00a0the\u00a0St. Louis community for more than 50 years. His father&#8217;s brothers first emigrated from the family\u00a0home\u00a0located\u00a0in a fishing village near <span class=\"xn-location\">Mumbai<\/span>, India.\u00a0Adam&#8217;s dad\u00a0soon\u00a0followed,\u00a0eager to do something new and to be near\u00a0his brothers. He\u00a0quickly\u00a0met and married, Adam&#8217;s mother,\u00a0the grand-daughter of first generation\u00a0German\u00a0immigrants. Upon arriving in <span class=\"xn-location\">St. Louis<\/span> between World Wars I and II, Adam&#8217;s great-grandparents\u00a0opened a successful\u00a0bakery\u00a0in downtown St. Louis.\u00a0At home, Adam&#8217;s dad cooked recipes based on his Indian upbringing, while his\u00a0maternal grandmother prepared family recipes\u00a0based on her German heritage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Adam says public television played a major role in his desire to become a chef. He grew up watching cooking shows, saying he could never get enough. He credits <span class=\"xn-person\">Julia Child<\/span> and other culinary hosts as great influences, but says the series &#8220;<span class=\"xn-person\">Yan Can Cook<\/span>!&#8221; (at more than 40 years, the longest-running cooking show on television!) was a favorite. <span class=\"xn-person\">Martin Yan<\/span>, one of the chefs on this year&#8217;s Create Cooking Challenge judges&#8217; panel, commented that he not only thought Adam presented a &#8220;good video all around,&#8221; but that he also &#8220;demonstrated solid technical skills and did an outstanding job in presenting the recipe for his dish.&#8221; In fact, several of the judges commented on the great job that Adam did in engaging the viewer in his video. <span class=\"xn-person\">Diane Kochilas<\/span> mentioned that the personal stories were &#8220;nice&#8221; and offered a &#8220;human touch,&#8221; while <span class=\"xn-person\">Nick Stellino<\/span> said he was impressed at &#8220;how well&#8221; Adam taught viewers <span class=\"xn-person\">Pati Jinich<\/span> repeatedly praised how well he walked the viewer through an Indian dish, &#8220;describing it in familiar terms so we all know what he is talking about.&#8221; She also was impressed by how knowledgeable he is about all the ingredients he uses. She and <span class=\"xn-person\">Kevin Belton<\/span> both said they can&#8217;t wait to try his recipe, which is called <i>Moka with Pupper, <\/i>described by Adam as &#8220;scrambled eggs with an Indian twist.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Adam is committed to focusing his CreateTV.com digital series on &#8220;Indian-inspired&#8221; recipes representing a sort of &#8220;fusion with recipes that are more familiar to the standard diner.&#8221;\u00a0He says they will not be overly &#8220;hot,&#8221;\u00a0and instead will make use of\u00a0spices and\u00a0aromatics\u00a0to\u00a0make each dish more accessible to the average home cook.<\/p>\n<p><b>Second Prize Winner, <span class=\"xn-person\">Dennis Perez<\/span><br \/><\/b>By day, Create Cooking Challenge: My Family&#8217;s Recipe Second Prize Winner Dennis Perez of <span class=\"xn-location\">Tampa, Florida<\/span>, works in IT and manages software development teams. Away from his computer, however, Dennis is in the kitchen tinkering with recipes and recording videos or, in the outdoors pursuing his other passions: hiking and archery.<\/p>\n<p><i>Page 3, Create Cooking Challenge Winners Announced<br \/><\/i>Whether inside the kitchen, at his computer, or slinging arrows downfield, Dennis is focused on what he loves to do, and he sharing these skills is important to him. Dennis was raised in a multi-generational setting, with family that spent more time in the kitchen than any other room in the house. His family first settled in <span class=\"xn-location\">New York<\/span> after leaving <span class=\"xn-location\">Cuba<\/span> and after many years, made their way to <span class=\"xn-location\">Tampa<\/span>, where they live now. He said that in his family, you &#8220;grew up in the kitchen&#8221; as it was the heart of their home and that &#8220;love was expressed through food.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His winning video, <i>Cuban Picadillo, <\/i>received high praise from the judges. <span class=\"xn-person\">Diane Kochilas<\/span> said she found Dennis to be &#8220;very engaging&#8221; saying she learned something from his stories, while <span class=\"xn-person\">Nick Stellino<\/span> was eager to see Dennis host a series. <span class=\"xn-person\">Pati Jinich<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-person\">Kevin Belton<\/span> both praised his work in holding the interest of the viewers with interesting camera shots and the tips for substitutions in his recipe.<\/p>\n<p><b>Coming to CreateTV.com<br \/><\/b>As work begins on both winners&#8217; series, it is anticipated that they will premiere by the Fall. Now in its fourth\u00a0year, the Create Cooking Challenge had nearly 110 video submissions from across the country, with viewers participating from more than 60 local public television markets.
