Extending last call for bars to the early morning will create a dangerous combination of drowsy and impaired drivers mixed with commuters. <b>Let&#8217;s not let tragedy take a backseat to commerce.&#8221;<\/b><\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3619748-1&amp;h=4180720014&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fleginfo.legislature.ca.gov%2Ffaces%2FbillNavClient.xhtml%3Fbill_id%3D202120220SB930&amp;a=SB+930\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">SB 930<\/a>\u00a0would allow closing times for on-sale retailers to be extended from <span class=\"xn-chron\">2 a.m. to 4 a.m.<\/span> as part of a dangerous &#8220;pilot program.&#8221; The experiment would take place in 6 cities: <span class=\"xn-location\">San Francisco<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Oakland<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">West Hollywood<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Cathedral City<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Coachella<\/span>, and <span class=\"xn-location\">Palm Springs<\/span>. <span class=\"xn-location\">Fresno<\/span> was originally the 7<sup>th<\/sup> city in the pilot program but requested to be removed from the bill due to opposition among <span class=\"xn-location\">Fresno<\/span> city leaders.<\/p>\n<p><i>&#8220;If any part of this terrible public policy change becomes law, whether it&#8217;s 6 cities, 5, 4, or 3, and a <span class=\"xn-chron\">4 a.m.<\/span> or <span class=\"xn-chron\">3 a.m.<\/span> last call, residents and visitors to <span class=\"xn-location\">California<\/span> communities will suffer,&#8221; <\/i>said <span class=\"xn-person\">Michael Scippa<\/span>, Public Affairs Director at Alcohol Justice.<i> &#8220;The protections of uniform, statewide <span class=\"xn-chron\">2 a.m.<\/span> last call will be shattered and blood will be spilled on the highways and in the communities in <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3619748-1&amp;h=871414289&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.alcoholjustice.org%2Fimages%2Freports%2Freports-full%2Fhighcost4am-PRINT.pdf&amp;a=splash+zones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">splash zones<\/a> surrounding the &#8220;pilot project&#8221; cities, the cities that have no &#8220;local control.&#8221; That blood will be on the hands of every legislator who voted yes, and Governor Newsom if does not veto SB 930, if it hits his desk.&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"xn-person\">Fred Jones<\/span>, representing <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3619748-1&amp;h=4242504506&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fprofile.php%3Fid%3D100063674611825&amp;a=California+Council+on+Alcohol+Problems%2C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">California Council on Alcohol Problems,<\/a> and the California Alcohol Policy Alliance (CAPA) stated <i>&#8220;Mixing inebriated drivers with early morning commuters is a cocktail of disaster!&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n<p>40 years of data show there is no &#8220;local control&#8221; when it comes to alcohol. The danger, harms and costs will not stay in the &#8220;Pilot Project Cities&#8221; where the drinking and economic benefits occur. If the bill becomes law, all surrounding communities of pilot project cities will be threatened by late night drinkers traveling drunk and fatigued into the early morning commute hours.<\/p>\n<p><i>&#8220;You can talk about the economic benefits for bars if late-night bars are in a bubble, separate from everyone else. Last week, the Los Angeles City Council passed a <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3619748-1&amp;h=2952401785&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Falcoholjustice.org%2Fimages%2FLetters%2FLA-SB930-resolution.pdf&amp;a=resolution+of+opposition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">resolution of opposition<\/a>, and the Los Angeles County Democratic Party (LACDP) came out against SB 930 in a <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3619748-1&amp;h=3397320936&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Falcoholjustice.org%2Fimages%2Fdownloadables%2Fother-letters%2FLACDP_SB930_OPPOSE.pdf&amp;a=letter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">letter<\/a> sent to Senator <span class=\"xn-person\">Scott Wiener<\/span>, co-author of the bill.
