Most victims weren&#8217;t surprised when it happened to them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last year, 84% said they were &#8220;surprised to find out they were a target of identity theft.&#8221; This year, that plummeted to 38%.<\/p>\n<p>Yet awareness didn&#8217;t equal action. Just the opposite, in fact. While more than 8 in 10 respondents said they used <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3744732-1&amp;h=3867139090&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.debt.com%2Fidentity-theft%2F&amp;a=identity-theft+protection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">identity-theft protection<\/a>\u00a0services last year, less than 4 in 10 told <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3744732-1&amp;h=870513338&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.debt.com%2F&amp;a=Debt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Debt.com<\/a>\u00a0the same thing this year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you stopped using or never used these services, you&#8217;re probably aware that you&#8217;re an easier target for thieves than those who avail themselves,&#8221; says Debt.com president <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3744732-1&amp;h=1499810959&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.debt.com%2Fauthor%2Fdsilvestri%2F&amp;a=Don+Silvestri\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"xn-person\">Don Silvestri<\/span><\/a>. &#8220;The real question is: Why are people giving up these services?
