The study, just published in the <i><a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3899249-1&amp;h=1940137930&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tandfonline.com%2Fdoi%2Ffull%2F10.1080%2F02770903.2023.2225607&amp;a=Journal+of+Asthma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Journal of Asthma<\/a>,<\/i> comes days after <span class=\"xn-location\">New York City<\/span> was blanketed in wildfire smoke.<\/p>\n<div id=\"prni_dvprnejpg9c9fleft\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"width: 100%; text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"prnejpg9c9fleft\" title=\"Montefiore\" src=\"https:\/\/mma.prnewswire.com\/media\/1480036\/MontefioreLogo2010_noTag_20high_20res_ID_bf9f32ca3fef_Logo.jpg\" alt=\"Montefiore\" align=\"middle\"\/><\/div>\n<p>In this first-of-its-kind study in children, led by pediatric hospitalist, <span class=\"xn-person\">Elissa B. Gross<\/span>, D.O., M.P.H, the investigators assessed medical records of more than 1,700 children, aged 2 \u2013 18-years-old, admitted to CHAM between 2017 \u2013 2019 and found that the mean length of stay increased up to 10% for every 10 micrograms of pollutants per cubic meter of air &#8211; equating to longer length of stay during times when air quality was poorer.<\/p>\n<p>Asthma is a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3899249-1&amp;h=2639654555&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.epa.gov%2Fchildren%2Fchildrens-environmental-health-facts&amp;a=leading+cause\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">leading cause<\/a> of pediatric hospitalizations in <span class=\"xn-location\">the United States<\/span>. In the <span class=\"xn-location\">Bronx<\/span> asthma prevalence in children is 17%, compared to 5.8% nationally. There are many factors that impact the condition, including socioeconomic status, environmental triggers found in homes, such as mold and pests, and air pollution \u2013 which disproportionately affects <span class=\"xn-location\">Bronx<\/span> residents due to the many surrounding highways.
