Love<\/span>, MD, MBA, who led Dr. Susan Love Foundation for Breast Cancer Research since 1995, steering the Foundation through its innovative and life-changing research and advocacy programs, has died. She was 75.<\/p>\n<div id=\"prni_dvprnejpg49d8left\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"width: 100%; text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"prnejpg49d8left\" title=\"Dr. Susan Love\" src=\"https:\/\/mma.prnewswire.com\/media\/2145886\/SLove_Portrait.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Susan Love\" align=\"middle\"\/><\/div>\n<p>Dr. Love passed away with recurrent leukemia on <span class=\"xn-chron\">July 2, 2023<\/span> in <span class=\"xn-location\">Los Angeles, California<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>A breast surgeon, Dr. Love is best known for pioneering work fueled by her criticism of the medical establishment&#8217;s paternalistic treatment of women. She was an early advocate of cancer surgery that conserves as much breast tissue as possible. She also was among the first to sound the alarm on the risks of routine hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopausal women. In her personal life, she fought to expand the rights of same-sex couples as parents. In 1993, Dr. Love and Dr. <span class=\"xn-person\">Helen Cooksey<\/span> made history by getting approval for the first joint adoption by a gay couple from the Supreme Court of <span class=\"xn-location\">Massachusetts<\/span>, a state that did not recognize same-sex marriage at the time.\u00a0This monumental case paved the way for <span class=\"xn-location\">Massachusetts<\/span> to become the first state to legalize same-sex marriage a decade later.<\/p>\n<p>After leaving the <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3910607-1&amp;h=2537308852&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fcfmedicine.nlm.nih.gov%2Fphysicians%2Fbiography_204.html&amp;a=Faulkner+Hospital+in+Boston\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Faulkner Hospital in <span class=\"xn-location\">Boston<\/span><\/a>, Dr. <span class=\"xn-person\">Susan Love<\/span> was recruited to set up what later became the<a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3910607-1&amp;h=4252636780&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fcancer.ucla.edu%2Fpatient-care%2Freceiving-clinical-care%2Fcancer-care-by-type%2Fbreast-cancer&amp;a=+Revlon+UCLA+Breast+Center\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"> Revlon UCLA Breast Center<\/a> in 1992. Last month, the <i>Journal Radiology<\/i> published results of a Dr. Susan Love Foundation NIH-sponsored study proving the efficacy of handheld ultrasound devices with AI to bring mammography to women in remote and under-resourced communities and countries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Love Research Army, which she launched in 2008, creatively accelerated cancer research by partnering volunteers and scientists for clinical trials and cancer research. After her second year of pre-med studies at <span class=\"xn-org\">Notre Dame<\/span> of <span class=\"xn-location\">Maryland<\/span>, she joined the School Sisters of <span class=\"xn-org\">Notre Dame<\/span> who sent her to <span class=\"xn-org\">Fordham University<\/span> in <span class=\"xn-location\">New York<\/span> to continue her studies. In the 1970s, medical schools were still admitting few women, perhaps 10% of the class, but Love, who was elected to <span class=\"xn-person\">Alpha Omega Alpha<\/span> and graduated cum laude, was among the five women who were the top graduates in the 1974 class of the <span class=\"xn-org\">State University of New York&#8217;s<\/span> Downstate Medical School.
