According to this year&#8217;s Debt.com survey results, identity theft is more frequent than ever, with 49.22% of respondents saying they have been victims, which is nearly 10% increase from 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Almost half of respondents said identity theft cost them up to <span class=\"xn-money\">$500<\/span>. That might explain why almost 1 in 5 took on more than <span class=\"xn-money\">$500<\/span> of debt due to the crime. Debt.com <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=4047285-1&amp;h=4127347348&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.debt.com%2Four-story%2F&amp;a=President+Don+Silvestri\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">President <span class=\"xn-person\">Don Silvestri<\/span><\/a>\u00a0predicts that debt will only grow over the next few years. &#8220;Not only is identity theft spreading, but it&#8217;s hurting Americans&#8217; fragile budgets more than ever,&#8221; he says. &#8220;They already face <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=4047285-1&amp;h=1806898030&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.debt.com%2Fdebt-relief%2F&amp;a=record+amounts+of+debt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">record amounts of debt<\/a>\u00a0due to rising interest rates, student loans, and credit card bills. They shouldn&#8217;t have to go into debt to recover from this crime.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=4047285-1&amp;h=1538152922&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.debt.com%2Fcredit-score%2F&amp;a=Credit+scores\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Credit scores<\/a>\u00a0also took a hit. More than 40% said their credit score dropped due to identity theft. In 2022, it was 31% and in 2021, that number was 38.5%. A significant number of those polled had their credit scores fall by up to 100 points with drops reaching new heights this year:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>2023 \u2013 38%\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>2022 \u2013 32%<\/li>\n<li>2021 \u2013 34%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;This is an ominous sign,&#8221; Silvestri says. &#8220;Taking on personal debt to recover from identity theft is bad enough, but a <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=4047285-1&amp;h=2015975739&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DKPhkhB4-hNY&amp;a=lower+credit+score\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">lower credit score<\/a>\u00a0has long-lasting ramifications. Imagine trying to buy a car or a home with a credit score that&#8217;s 100 points lower. That could add up to thousands of dollars for years to come. Identity theft is a crime that just keeps on taking.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The survey found that some areas of the country were more affected than others. The Mid-Atlantic region reports the highest incidents of identity theft (22.06%) while New England has the lowest (3.44%).
