Among these are chest pains, heart palpitations, atrial fibrillation, vascular and heart disease, hypertensive crisis, infections of all kinds, and COVID-19.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"prni_dvprnejpg44c9left\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"width: 100%; text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"prnejpg44c9left\" title=\"Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan \" src=\"https:\/\/mma.prnewswire.com\/media\/2476739\/BSCPHP_Logo.jpg\" alt=\"Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan \" align=\"middle\"\/><\/div>\n<p>Since the Center opened in <span class=\"xn-chron\">July 2023<\/span>, the growth rate of patients has been &#8220;mind blowing,&#8221;\u00a0 according to <span class=\"xn-person\">Fran Butler-Cohen<\/span>, CEO of Family Health Centers of <span class=\"xn-location\">San Diego<\/span> (FHCSD), which operates the El Cajon Center and is the county&#8217;s largest health center system serving the region&#8217;s low-income residents.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Word-of-mouth about the urgent and cardiac care services available here has created explosive growth,&#8221; Butler-Cohen said.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"xn-person\">Kristen Cerf<\/span>, CEO and president of Blue Shield Promise, said the nonprofit health plan had two goals in mind in providing support in <span class=\"xn-location\">El Cajon<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The first was to improve access to urgent medical care and cardiology services for patients in <span class=\"xn-location\">San Diego&#8217;s<\/span> underserved <span class=\"xn-location\">East County<\/span> area,&#8221; she said. &#8220;The second was to reduce avoidable emergency room visits and hospital readmissions within 30 days of patients being discharged. We&#8217;re pleased to see our support is making a meaningful difference in improved access to care for people living in the region.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to Butler-Cohen, the El Cajon Center already has surpassed two year&#8217;s worth of goals in its first year \u2013 both in the number of patients served and reducing unnecessary trips to an emergency room.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our data not only shows 24,000 new patients within our first year; it also demonstrates that this Center has reduced avoidable hospital emergency room visits by more than 6,300 patients, which means those patients are receiving community-based care while we reduce healthcare costs,&#8221; Butler-Cohen said. &#8220;Simply put, Blue Shield Promise&#8217;s <span class=\"xn-money\">$1 million<\/span> investment breaks down to costing about <span class=\"xn-money\">$41<\/span> a visit for each of our patients \u2014a very inexpensive way to keep patients out of an emergency room.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Patients who have used the Center come from diverse backgrounds\u00a0 and communities in <span class=\"xn-location\">San Diego<\/span>:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>They are ethnically diverse \u2013 Latino, White, Black, Asian, and American Indian.<\/li>\n<li>More women use both the urgent and cardiac care services than men.<\/li>\n<li>The majority of patients seeking cardiac care are between 30 to 69 years old, with those who are 40 to 69 years old comprising the largest group.<\/li>\n<li>For urgent medical care, children from newborns through 17 years old and young adults ages 18-29 are the largest groups.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Harris\u00a0Niazi, MD, assistant medical director, Urgent Care, and one of the physicians at the El Cajon Urgent Care Clinic, said he has come full circle. &#8220;I came to America as a child refugee from <span class=\"xn-location\">Afghanistan<\/span>.
