StateWide is <span class=\"xn-location\">New York&#8217;s<\/span> grantee\/administrator for this Federal Program.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As you look for your best health coverage options, don&#8217;t forget to keep an eye open for fraudsters! Open Enrollment can quickly become an &#8220;Open Season&#8221; for scammers,&#8221; stated <span class=\"xn-person\">Maria Alvarez<\/span>, Executive Director of StateWide.<\/p>\n<p>Alvarez cited the following Medicare Scams that occur during the enrollment period:<\/p>\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li>Watch out for people who: Claim they work with Medicare, are an &#8220;official Medicare agent&#8221; or &#8220;represent Medicare&#8221;.\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li>There are no Medicare representatives and Medicare will never cold call you.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Say you must join a Medicare prescription plan (also known as Part D).\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li>It is voluntary to join a Medicare prescription drug plan.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Ask for personal information, such as your Medicare number, Social Security number and\/or bank information.\n<\/li>\n<li>Threaten or pressure you to enroll in their plan.\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li>You will not lose your benefits and have the entire Open Enrollment Period to decide on a plan.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Offer you gifts to enroll in their plan &#8212; it&#8217;s illegal.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you suspect your Medicare number or Social Security number has been compromised or believe you have been enrolled in a plan without your permission, please call the NYS Senior Medicare Patrol at 800-333-4374.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have trained counselors to help educate Medicare beneficiaries in the fight against health care fraud. <b>To report Medicare fraud, errors or abuse you can call our NYS Medicare Fraud Helpline at 800-333-4374 or visit <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=4275550-1&amp;h=3781441770&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nysenior.org%2F&amp;a=www.nysenior.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">www.nysenior.org<\/a>,&#8221; <\/b>Alvarez concluded.<\/p>\n<p>StateWide also provides information and educational presentations, assistance regarding any Medicare questions, plan comparisons, appeals and billing issues and patients&#8217; rights \u00a0to all seniors throughout <span class=\"xn-location\">New York State<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>It is estimated that Medicare fraud costs taxpayers over <span class=\"xn-money\">$60 billion dollars<\/span> nationally per year.
