This year, AI has respondents worried about three distinct misuses of AI technology:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>29% : Deepfakes \u2013 AI used to impersonate audio and video of known individuals.<\/li>\n<li>21%: Generative AI \u2013 Technology used to create realistic social media profiles.<\/li>\n<li>28%: AI-powered password cracking \u2013 Technology that analyzes large amounts of data to identify patterns and predict passwords.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;Identity theft became the world&#8217;s most frequent crime with the rise of the Internet,&#8221; says Debt.com founder, CPA, and financial expert <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=4319861-1&amp;h=3225083246&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.debt.com%2Fauthor%2Fhdvorkin%2F&amp;a=Howard+Dvorkin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"xn-person\">Howard Dvorkin<\/span><\/a>. &#8220;It&#8217;s certain to take another big leap as AI becomes more powerful and prevalent. Cyber thieves love technology even more than the rest of us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While Dvorkin wasn&#8217;t surprised that 43% of respondents have already experienced identity theft, he was disturbed that roughly 1 in 5 (23%) have, or are related to, a child who has been a victim of the crime.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Besides being unsettling, <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=4319861-1&amp;h=3573814206&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.debt.com%2Fidentity-theft%2Fchild-identity-theft%2F&amp;a=stealing+a+child%27s+identity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">stealing a child&#8217;s identity<\/a> can be even harder to fix,&#8221; Dvorkin says. &#8220;The reason is simple: Children aren&#8217;t checking their credit and identity thieves have more time to get away with the crime.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><b>Victims of ID Theft Measure the Cost in More than Money<\/b><\/p>\n<p>For 23% of respondents, identity theft cost them at least <span class=\"xn-money\">$500<\/span> in stolen money or to fix the problem. Of the victims who incurred debt:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>23% took on <span class=\"xn-money\">$0<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-money\">$250<\/span> of debt<\/li>\n<li>40% took on <span class=\"xn-money\">$251<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-money\">$500<\/span> of debt<\/li>\n<li>37% took on <span class=\"xn-money\">$501<\/span> or more of debt<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For 17% of respondents, identity theft harmed their credit score.
