StateWide is <span class=\"xn-location\">New York&#8217;s<\/span> grantee\/administrator for this Federal Program.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;December may be the time for giving but beware of unsolicited offers of Durable Medical Equipment.\u00a0Fraudsters target Medicare beneficiaries with schemes to sell unnecessary DME like back, knee, or wrist braces,&#8221; explained <span class=\"xn-person\">Maria Alvarez<\/span>, Executive Director of StateWide.<\/p>\n<p><span>Alvarez offered the following tips to protect Seniors&#8217; Medicare benefits and health:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Unsolicited Calls &amp; Offers: <\/b><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Be wary of phone calls or ads claiming &#8220;qualification&#8221; for free or low-cost braces.\u00a0Scammers may try to collect Seniors&#8217; Medicare information to bill for unnecessary equipment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Medicare Fraud Risks: <\/b><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Once fraudsters have an individual&#8217;s Medicare information, they can submit fraudulent claims, potentially jeopardizing access to legitimate healthcare needs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Unnecessary Equipment: <\/b><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Receiving DME not requested alters a patient&#8217;s medical identity.<\/li>\n<li>This will impact how doctors offer treatment<\/li>\n<li>Always consult a doctor for medical advice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>StateWide offers Seniors the Following Advice to Avoid DME Scams:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Guard Medicare Numbers and other personal information:<\/b>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Treat it like a credit card number and share it only with trusted healthcare providers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Don&#8217;t Respond to Unsolicited Offers: <\/b><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Hang up on unexpected calls about medical equipment or services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Be Sure a Doctor:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Has personally assessed your condition and orders the proper equipment or supplies customized to your specific needs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Report Suspicious Activity:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Check Medicare statements and look for charges for equipment never requested or not received.<\/li>\n<li>If unrequested DME is received and fraud is suspected report it immediately to the NYS Senior Medicare Patrol.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;We have trained counselors to help educate Medicare beneficiaries in the fight against health care fraud. <b>To report Medicare fraud, errors or abuse you can call our NYS Medicare Fraud Helpline at 800-333-4374 or visit <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=4324140-1&amp;h=3130577023&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nysenior.org%2F&amp;a=www.nysenior.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">www.nysenior.org<\/a>,&#8221; <\/b>Alvarez concluded.<\/p>\n<p>StateWide also provides information and educational presentations, assistance regarding any Medicare questions, plan comparisons, appeals, billing issues and patients&#8217; rights to all seniors throughout <span class=\"xn-location\">New York State<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>It is estimated that Medicare fraud costs taxpayers over <span class=\"xn-money\">$60 billion dollars<\/span> nationally per year.
