StateWide is <span class=\"xn-location\">New York&#8217;s<\/span> grantee\/administrator for this Federal Program.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As of <span class=\"xn-chron\">Jan 1, 2025<\/span>, Medicare is limiting the out-of-pocket costs for prescription drugs to <span class=\"xn-money\">$2<\/span>,000\u00a0per year for seniors. This cap applies to covered Medicare Part D prescription drugs, making medications more affordable for millions of beneficiaries. However,\u00a0scammers may try to take advantage of this new program by offering fake services or creating fraudulent schemes,&#8221; explained <span class=\"xn-person\">Maria Alvarez<\/span>, Executive Director of StateWide.<\/p>\n<p><b>Alvarez warned of potential fraud schemes to watch out for:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Unsolicited calls offering help:\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Beware of unsolicited phone calls claiming to offer assistance with your Medicare Part D benefits, especially if they ask for personal information like Medicare numbers or bank details.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>&#8220;Upfront payments&#8221; for new benefits:\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Scammers may tell you that in order to qualify for the new cap, you need to pay an upfront fee or &#8220;processing&#8221; fee.<\/li>\n<li>No legitimate Medicare program will ask you for payment before you can access benefits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>There is No Need for Extra Cards or Documentation:\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>If enrolled in a Medicare Prescription Payment Plan, there is no need to show anything extra (like an additional card) when picking up prescriptions at the pharmacy.<\/li>\n<li>Current health or drug plans will bill beneficiaries as is custom<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>How to Protect Against These Scams <\/b><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Do not share personal information with unsolicited callers or emails.<\/li>\n<li>Check Medicare statements carefully for any errors or suspicious charges.<\/li>\n<li>Guard a Medicare card like it&#8217;s a credit card.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;We have trained counselors to help educate Medicare beneficiaries in the fight against health care fraud. <b>To report Medicare fraud, errors or abuse you can call our NYS Medicare Fraud Helpline at 800-333-4374 or visit <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=4339841-1&amp;h=4068650724&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nysenior.org%2F&amp;a=www.nysenior.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">www.nysenior.org<\/a>,&#8221; <\/b>Alvarez concluded.<\/p>\n<p>StateWide also provides information and educational presentations, assistance regarding any Medicare questions, plan comparisons, appeals,\u00a0billing issues and patients&#8217; rights to all seniors throughout <span class=\"xn-location\">New York State<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>It is estimated that Medicare fraud costs taxpayers over <span class=\"xn-money\">$60 billion dollars<\/span> nationally per year.
