StateWide is <span class=\"xn-location\">New York&#8217;s<\/span> grantee\/administrator for this Federal Program.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Medical Identity Theft occurs when someone uses a senior&#8217;s personal health information\u2014like a name or Medicare number \u2014 to fraudulently bill for services or supplies never received, such as treatments, equipment, or surgery,&#8221; explained <span class=\"xn-person\">Maria Alvarez<\/span>, Executive Director of the New York StateWide Senior Action Council. &#8220;Medical Identity Theft\u00a0can affect the elderly&#8217;s finances, and also can put their health at risk, &#8220;she added.<\/p>\n<p><b>Alvarez advises older adults to be aware of the following warning signs of Medical Identity Theft:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Receipt of a bill for medical services never performed or received.<\/li>\n<li>Insurance denies coverage or limits benefits due to a non-existing condition.<\/li>\n<li>A debt collection agency contacts seniors about medical expenses not recognized.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Unauthorized use of an elder&#8217;s identity to get medical care, false details\u2014like the wrong blood type, fake diagnoses, or incorrect test results\u2014can end up in their records. This can lead to denied services, delays in care, or even harmful treatments based on someone else&#8217;s medical history.<\/p>\n<p><b>SMP Advises How to Protect Against These Scams:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Seniors should not share their Medicare number with anyone except their doctor, health care provider, or someone trusted.<\/li>\n<li>Medicare cards should be treated like credit cards \u2014 kept safe and private.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid &#8220;free&#8221; offers for testing, treatments, or supplies from unknown individuals.\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>For example,\u00a0scammers may offer &#8220;free&#8221; flex cards or grocery cards in exchange for Medicare numbers.\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Do not let anyone borrow or pay to use personal Medicare numbers or identities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Only buy medical supplies from verified sources, not from ads, emails, or unsolicited phone calls.<\/li>\n<li>Routinely check Medicare Summary Notices (MSNs) and Explanation of Benefits (EOBs) for services or equipment not received.<\/li>\n<li>If a Senior is contacted by a\u00a0scammer or suspects Medicare fraud, it should be reported to the NYS Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP)! <b>Call its Helpline at 800-333-4374.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;We have trained counselors to help educate Medicare beneficiaries in the fight against health care fraud. <b>To report Medicare fraud, errors or abuse you can call our NYS Medicare Fraud Helpline at 800-333-4374 or visit <a href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=4402361-1&amp;h=1523328569&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nysenior.org%2F&amp;a=www.nysenior.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">www.nysenior.org<\/a><\/b>,&#8221;\u00a0Alvarez concluded.<\/p>\n<p>StateWide also provides information and educational presentations, assistance regarding any Medicare questions, plan comparisons, appeals,\u00a0billing issues and patients&#8217; rights to all seniors throughout <span class=\"xn-location\">New York State<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>It is estimated that Medicare fraud costs taxpayers over <span class=\"xn-money\">$60 billion dollars<\/span> nationally per year.
