These<br \/>\nbraces are made of stainless steel brackets and wires and are generally the<br \/>\nleast expensive choice for patients.<\/p>\n<p>While metal braces are the most noticeable type of braces, modern versions<br \/>\nare much smaller than you might remember. The idea of a &#8220;metal mouth&#8221; better<br \/>\ndescribes earlier versions of orthodontics and no longer applies to today&#8217;s<br \/>\nsmaller brackets and wires. Kids and teens also enjoy the colored bands that can<br \/>\nbe put on the brackets, which lets them pick a color that fits their<br \/>\npersonality.<\/p>\n<p><b>Clear Braces<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Clear braces became popular in the early 1980s as a cosmetic alternative to<br \/>\nmetal. The brackets are made of tooth colored ceramic or plastic so that they<br \/>\nare less noticeable, but in all other ways they function similarly to<br \/>\ntraditional metal braces. Tooth colored or metal wires may be used in<br \/>\ncombination with the clear brackets depending on the patient and the<br \/>\northodontist.<\/p>\n<p>Clear braces are generally more expensive than metal braces, and can stain<br \/>\neasily if the patient doesn&#8217;t properly care for them. But many people enjoy them<br \/>\nfor their aesthetic qualities that make having traditional braces less<br \/>\nnoticeable.<\/p>\n<p><b>Lingual Braces<\/b><\/p>\n<p>These special braces are placed on the back of the teeth instead of on the<br \/>\nfront. They were invented in the 1970s and were historically unpopular in the<br \/>\nUnited States. But in recent years these braces have become more available to<br \/>\npatients as technology has improved the way they feel.<\/p>\n<p>While these braces are completely invisible from the outside, they can be<br \/>\ndifficult to clean and can be uncomfortable for patients. Adjustments are<br \/>\ngenerally more challenging and take longer than with traditional braces, and<br \/>\nthey are not suitable for treating severe cases.<\/p>\n<p><b>Clear Aligners<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Clear aligners became available to the public in 2000. It is a modern<br \/>\nalternative to traditional bracket and wire braces treatment that is available<br \/>\nfor some patients, depending on the severity of their issues.<\/p>\n<p>The clear aligner system consists of a series of custom, removable trays that<br \/>\nare changed every few weeks to slowly move the teeth into a proper position. The<br \/>\ntrays are made of clear plastic and conform exactly to the teeth based on molds<br \/>\nof the patient&#8217;s mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Adults and teens enjoy the almost invisibility of clear aligners as well as<br \/>\ntheir ability to remove the trays for eating. However the overall treatment<br \/>\nprocess can take longer than with traditional braces and this form of braces is<br \/>\nnot available for children.
