These payments, including Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), are not subject to income tax if the disability occurred as a direct result from a terrorist attack. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><b>Tax forgiveness for the deceased as a result of any of the attacks listed above<\/b>. Tax relief is available retroactively to one year before the attack.\n<p>For joint tax returns, only the tax liability of the deceased is eligible for tax forgiveness. If both spouses are eligible, the amount of relief is determined separately. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><b>Assistance for personal, family, living, or funeral expenses incurred because of a terrorist attack<\/b>. The IRS grants at least $10,000, either as credit or refund, if the deceased&#8217;s total tax relief is less than this amount. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Forms to apply for tax relief<\/b><\/p>\n<p>There aren&#8217;t specific tax relief forms for survivors of terrorist attacks. <a href=\"http:\/\/get.adobe.com\/reader\/\" target=\"_blank\">Download Adobe Reader<\/a> and choose the appropriate tax form for your situation:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/f1040.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">1040<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/f1040nr.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">1040NR<\/a> (nonresident alien) form is for:\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Claiming tax forgiveness for someone who is dead <\/li>\n<li>Requesting a refund for taxes withheld from disability payments. Complete <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/f1040x.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">1040X<\/a> if you have already filed your return.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/fw4.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">W-4<\/a> form to stop withholding tax payments declared on a W-2 form. Present the W-4 form to your employer. <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/fw4p.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">W-4P<\/a> form to stop withholding taxes on pension or annuity payments declared on a 1099-R form. Show this form to your company or pension agency. <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/fw4v.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">W-4V<\/a> to stop withholding SSDI payments.
