Gallegos, an <span class=\"xn-location\">Iraq<\/span> war Army veteran, is the 2015 National Hero of the Year. <span class=\"xn-location\">Gainesville, FL<\/span>, letter carrier and former <span class=\"xn-person\">Marine Alan Symonette<\/span>, who extracted a driver whose car had plunged into a pond and was filling with water, is the Eastern Region Hero. <span class=\"xn-location\">Akron, OH<\/span>, letter carrier <span class=\"xn-person\">Kizzy Spaulding<\/span>, who pulled an unresponsive woman from her burning home, and <span class=\"xn-location\">Tulsa, OK<\/span>, letter carrier <span class=\"xn-person\">Steve Shipman<\/span>, who rescued an 11-year-old girl from a house fire, are the Central Region and Western Region Heroes, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Several other carriers also are being recognized as heroes. They represent thousands of letter carriers who not only deliver the mail to 153 million households and businesses six days a week, but often assist in situations involving accidents, fires, crimes or health crises.<\/p>\n<p>Retired <span class=\"xn-location\">Garden Grove, CA<\/span>, letter carrier <span class=\"xn-person\">James Robledo<\/span>, a Vietnam War veteran who through the Guitars for Vets program helps others deal with their combat experiences, is Humanitarian of the Year. Carrier Alert winner <span class=\"xn-person\">Denice Howard<\/span>, a <span class=\"xn-location\">Plainfield, NJ<\/span>, letter carrier, located an elderly customer who had fallen on ice, after concluding that the way he had parked his car indicated trouble. <span class=\"xn-location\">Eugene, OR<\/span>, letter carriers <span class=\"xn-person\">Terrence Graves<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-person\">Bryce McLean<\/span>, who spotted and detained a suspected thief, are recipients of the Unit Citation award.
