Brown Jr.&#8217;s<\/span> appointment of <span class=\"xn-person\">Debra Lee<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-person\">Eric Berg<\/span> as the newest Cal\/OSHA Deputy Chiefs. The appointments build on Lee and Berg&#8217;s combined 39 years of experience working with Cal\/OSHA to strengthen workplace health and safety.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Governor Brown appointed two of the most experienced and informed Cal\/OSHA employees to help guide the division into the future,&#8221; said DIR Director <span class=\"xn-person\">Christine Baker<\/span>. Cal\/OSHA, officially known as the Division of Occupational Safety and Health, is a division of DIR.<\/p>\n<p>As Deputy Chief of Safety with Cal\/OSHA&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dir.ca.gov\/dosh\/EnforcementPage.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Enforcement Branch<\/a>, <span class=\"xn-person\">Debra Lee<\/span> will oversee investigations and inspections of <span class=\"xn-location\">California&#8217;s<\/span> worksites. Her duties will include managing Cal\/OSHA&#8217;s regular enforcement offices statewide, as well as the specialized <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dir.ca.gov\/dosh\/mining-and-tunneling-unit.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mining and Tunneling<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dir.ca.gov\/dosh\/high-hazard-unit.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">High Hazard<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dir.ca.gov\/dosh\/letf-unit.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Labor Enforcement Task Force<\/a> units. <\/p>\n<p>As Deputy Chief of Health, <span class=\"xn-person\">Eric Berg<\/span> will manage Cal\/OSHA&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dir.ca.gov\/dosh\/research-and-standards-unit.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">research and standards<\/a> activities, including the development of health and safety regulations. He will also oversee Cal\/OSHA&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dir.ca.gov\/dosh\/other-calosha-units.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Medical and Toxicology<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dir.ca.gov\/dosh\/asbestos.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Asbestos and Carcinogen<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dir.ca.gov\/dosh\/Cranes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Crane<\/a> units. <\/p>\n<p>The new appointees will serve under the general direction of Cal\/OSHA Chief <span class=\"xn-person\">Juliann Sum<\/span>. &#8220;I have worked closely with both <span class=\"xn-person\">Debra Lee<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-person\">Eric Berg<\/span>, and have complete confidence in their ability to carry out our critical responsibilities in enforcement, research and standards,&#8221; said Chief Sum. <\/p>\n<p><span class=\"xn-person\">Debra Lee<\/span> originally joined Cal\/OSHA as an industrial hygienist with the High Hazard Unit in 1994. She was promoted several times, most recently to Acting Deputy Chief of Field Enforcement in <span class=\"xn-chron\">April 2015<\/span>. Lee holds a bachelor&#8217;s degree in health science from <span class=\"xn-org\">Cal State University Northridge<\/span> and knew at an early age that she wanted a career protecting working people. She is inspired by Dr. <span class=\"xn-person\">Martin Luther King Jr.&#8217;s<\/span> quote, &#8220;All labor has dignity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"xn-person\">Eric Berg<\/span> also started his career with Cal\/OSHA as an industrial hygienist in 1997.\u00a0 He has served as a safety engineer in multiple units, and was promoted to Acting Deputy Chief of Research and Standards in <span class=\"xn-chron\">April 2015<\/span>. Berg holds a master&#8217;s degree in environmental health engineering from <span class=\"xn-org\">University of California, Berkeley<\/span>, and a bachelor&#8217;s in civil engineering from <span class=\"xn-org\">Cal State University Chico<\/span>. He is also fluent in the Spanish language.<\/p>\n<p>Cal\/OSHA helps protect workers from health and safety hazards on the job in almost every workplace in <span class=\"xn-location\">California<\/span>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dir.ca.gov\/dosh\/consultation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cal\/OSHA&#8217;s Consultation Services Branch<\/a> provides free and voluntary assistance to employers and employee organizations to improve their health and safety programs.
