The population in these four metro areas increased by more than 400,000 people from <span class=\"xn-chron\">July 1, 2014<\/span>, to <span class=\"xn-chron\">July 1, 2015<\/span>. <\/p>\n<p>Logo &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/photos.prnewswire.com\/prnh\/20110428\/DC91889LOGO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">http:\/\/photos.prnewswire.com\/prnh\/20110428\/DC91889LOGO<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>The <span class=\"xn-location\">Houston<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">The Woodlands<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">Sugar Land<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Dallas-Fort Worth<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">Arlington<\/span> metro areas added about 159,000 and 145,000 residents, respectively \u2014 the largest gains of any metro areas in the nation. Two additional <span class=\"xn-location\">Texas<\/span> metro areas adjacent to each other \u2500 <span class=\"xn-person\">Austin-Round Rock<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">San Antonio<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">New Braunfels<\/span> \u2500 were each also among the 16 nationwide to gain 50,000 or more people over the period.<\/p>\n<p>These four <span class=\"xn-location\">Texas<\/span> metro areas collectively added about 412,000 people. <span class=\"xn-location\">Texas<\/span> as a whole gained about 490,000.<\/p>\n<p>The statistics released today provide population estimates for our nation&#8217;s 381 metropolitan statistical areas, 536 micropolitan statistical areas and 3,142 counties.<\/p>\n<p>Eight <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/popest\/data\/counties\/totals\/2015\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">counties<\/a> drove <span class=\"xn-location\">Texas&#8217;<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/popest\/data\/metro\/totals\/2015\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">metro area<\/a> growth and were among the 20 counties nationwide that gained the most population between 2014 and 2015. Altogether, they added 306,736 people:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>The <span class=\"xn-location\">Dallas<\/span> metro area contained four of these counties: <span class=\"xn-location\">Tarrant<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Dallas<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Collin<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Denton<\/span>. <\/li>\n<li>The <span class=\"xn-location\">Houston<\/span> metro area contained two: Harris, which led the nation by gaining more than 90,000 people, and <span class=\"xn-location\">Fort Bend<\/span>. <\/li>\n<li><span class=\"xn-location\">Bexar<\/span>, in the <span class=\"xn-location\">San Antonio<\/span> metro area. <\/li>\n<li><span class=\"xn-location\">Travis<\/span>, in the Austin metro area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><span class=\"xn-location\">Florida<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Texas<\/span> and Coastal Carolinas Dominate List of Fastest-Growing Metro Areas<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"xn-location\">The Villages, Fla.<\/span>, a metro area west of the <span class=\"xn-location\">Orlando<\/span> metro area, was the nation&#8217;s fastest-growing metro area for the third year in a row, as its population increased 4.3 percent between 2014 and 2015. It was joined in the top 20 by five others in the Sunshine State: <span class=\"xn-location\">Cape Coral<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">Fort Myers<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Punta Gorda<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">North Port<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">Sarasota<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">Bradenton<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Orlando<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">Kissimmee<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">Sanford<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Naples<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">Immokalee<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">Marco Island<\/span>. <\/p>\n<p>Five <span class=\"xn-location\">Texas<\/span> metros \u2500 <span class=\"xn-location\">Midland<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Odessa<\/span>, Austin, <span class=\"xn-location\">College Station<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">Bryan<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Houston<\/span> \u2500 were also among the 20 fastest growing between 2014 and 2015.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to growth in several metro areas in <span class=\"xn-location\">Florida<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Texas<\/span>, three metro areas partially or completely within <span class=\"xn-location\">South Carolina<\/span> were among the 20 fastest growing between 2014 and 2015: <\/p>\n<p><span class=\"xn-person\">Myrtle Beach-Conway-North Myrtle Beach<\/span>, S.C.-N.C. (which ranked second nationally), <span class=\"xn-person\">Hilton Head Island-Bluffton-Beaufort<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-person\">Charleston-North Charleston<\/span>. <\/p>\n<p><span class=\"xn-location\">Houston<\/span>, Austin and <span class=\"xn-location\">Orlando<\/span> were the only three metro areas nationwide to be among both the 20 with the largest numeric gains and the 20 fastest growing (percentage gain) between 2014 and 2015.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"xn-location\">North Dakota<\/span> was home to each of the four fastest-growing counties (among those with populations of 10,000 or more in 2015) between 2014 and 2015. <span class=\"xn-location\">McKenzie<\/span> (16.7 percent population growth) led, followed by <span class=\"xn-location\">Williams<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Mountrail<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Stark<\/span>. <span class=\"xn-location\">McKenzie<\/span> passed the<\/p>\n<p>10,000 person threshold in 2014 for the first time. However, eight of the 20 fastest-growing counties were in <span class=\"xn-location\">Texas<\/span>, with three more in <span class=\"xn-location\">Florida<\/span> and two in <span class=\"xn-location\">Utah<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Two Metros Power North Carolina&#8217;s Climb to 10 Million Milestone<\/b><\/p>\n<p>State population estimates released in December revealed that <span class=\"xn-location\">North Carolina<\/span> added more than 100,000 people during the last year to become the ninth state with 10 million or more people. The growth to reach this milestone was, in large part, propelled by two metro areas partially or completely within the state: <span class=\"xn-location\">Raleigh, N.C.<\/span>, the 16th fastest-growing metro area in the U.S., and <span class=\"xn-location\">Charlotte<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">Concord<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">Gastonia, N.C.<\/span>-S.C., the 17th largest numeric-gaining metro area in the U.S. Together, these two metro areas grew by about 78,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>Other findings:<\/p>\n<p><b>Counties<\/b><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><span class=\"xn-location\">Los Angeles, Calif.<\/span>, is still the nation&#8217;s most populous county with 10.2 million people on <span class=\"xn-chron\">July 1, 2015<\/span>. <\/li>\n<li>The nation&#8217;s second-most populous county \u2500 <span class=\"xn-location\">Cook, Ill.<\/span> \u2500 experienced its first population decline since 2007: 10,488 between 2014 and 2015 to 5.2 million. <\/li>\n<li>Two counties passed the 1 million population milestone between 2014 and 2015: <span class=\"xn-location\">Fulton, Ga.<\/span>, which is home to <span class=\"xn-location\">Atlanta<\/span> (1,010,562), and <span class=\"xn-location\">Wake, N.C.<\/span> (1,024,198). <span class=\"xn-location\">Wake<\/span>, which includes <span class=\"xn-location\">Raleigh<\/span>, was also the nation&#8217;s 19th largest numerical gainer among counties, adding nearly 25,000 people. <\/li>\n<li>Another two counties passed the 100,000 population mark: Matanuska-Susitna Borough, <span class=\"xn-location\">Alaska<\/span> (101,095) and <span class=\"xn-location\">Gallatin, Mont.<\/span> (100,739). <\/li>\n<li>Next to <span class=\"xn-location\">Texas<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">California<\/span> (five) and <span class=\"xn-location\">Florida<\/span> (three) contained the highest number of counties on the list of the top 20 by numeric growth between 2014 and 2015. <\/li>\n<li><span class=\"xn-location\">Maricopa, Ariz.<\/span> (<span class=\"xn-location\">Phoenix<\/span>) led the nation&#8217;s counties in net domestic migration increase (38,000), followed by <span class=\"xn-location\">Clark, Nev.<\/span> (<span class=\"xn-location\">Las Vegas<\/span>) at 25,000. <span class=\"xn-location\">Los Angeles<\/span> led in net international migration (57,000), followed by <span class=\"xn-location\">Miami-Dade, Fla.<\/span> (44,000). <\/li>\n<li>Among the largest counties (those with populations of 250,000 or more in 2015), <span class=\"xn-location\">Fort Bend, Texas<\/span>, was the fastest growing, as its population climbed 4.3 percent between 2014 and 2015, to 716,087. <\/li>\n<li>Among very small counties, <span class=\"xn-location\">Loving, Texas<\/span>, was the fastest growing of those with a population of fewer than 5,000 people in 2015 (28.7 percent growth). Among those in the 5,000-9,999 population range, <span class=\"xn-location\">Bailey, Texas<\/span>, led in rate of growth (3.6 percent). <\/li>\n<li><span class=\"xn-location\">Cook, Ill.<\/span>, had the largest numeric decline among counties at 10,488 people. The next largest decline belonged to <span class=\"xn-location\">Wayne, Mich.<\/span>, at 6,673.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Metro areas <\/b><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>The nation&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/population\/metro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">metro areas<\/a> contained 275.3 million people in 2015, an increase of about <\/li>\n<li>2.5 million from 2014.\u00a0 <\/li>\n<li>Most (285 of the 381) metro areas nationwide gained population between 2014 and 2015.\u00a0 <\/li>\n<li>Four of the 20 fastest-growing metro areas between 2014 and 2015 were in the Mountain states: <span class=\"xn-location\">Greeley<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Fort Collins<\/span> in <span class=\"xn-location\">Colorado<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">St. George<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Provo<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">Orem<\/span> in <span class=\"xn-location\">Utah<\/span>. <\/li>\n<li>Between 2014 and 2015, <span class=\"xn-location\">Fargo, N.D.<\/span>-Minn., was the fastest-growing metro area outside of the South or West, ranking 23rd. <\/li>\n<li>The <span class=\"xn-location\">Miami<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">Fort Lauderdale<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">West Palm Beach, Fla.<\/span>, metro area added about 75,000 people between 2014 and 2015 to surpass 6 million in population. Two more <span class=\"xn-location\">Florida<\/span> metros \u2500 <span class=\"xn-location\">Orlando<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Tampa<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">St. Petersburg-Clearwater<\/span> \u2500 also gained more than 50,000 people. <\/li>\n<li>Three <span class=\"xn-location\">California<\/span> metro areas gained more than 50,000 people between 2014 and 2015: <span class=\"xn-location\">Los Angeles-Long Beach<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">Anaheim<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">San Francisco<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">Oakland<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">Hayward<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Riverside<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">San Bernardino<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">Ontario<\/span>. <\/li>\n<li>Between <span class=\"xn-chron\">July 1, 2014<\/span>, and <span class=\"xn-chron\">July 1, 2015<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Washington<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">Arlington<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">Alexandria<\/span>, D.C.-Va.-Md.-W.Va., surpassed <span class=\"xn-location\">Philadelphia<\/span>-Camden-<span class=\"xn-location\">Wilmington, Pa.<\/span>-N.J.-Del.-Md., to become the sixth most populous metro area. <span class=\"xn-location\">New York<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">Newark<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">Jersey City<\/span>, N.Y.-N.J.-Pa., remained the most populous, followed by <span class=\"xn-location\">Los Angeles<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Chicago<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">Naperville<\/span>&#8211;<span class=\"xn-location\">Elgin, Ill.<\/span>-Ind.-Wis., <span class=\"xn-location\">Dallas<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Houston<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Micro areas <\/b><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>The nation&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/population\/metro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">micro areas<\/a> contained about 27.3 million people in 2015, an increase of around 27,000 from 2014.\u00a0 <\/li>\n<li>Nearly half the U.S. micro areas (261 of the 536) gained population between 2014 and 2015.\u00a0 <\/li>\n<li><span class=\"xn-location\">North Dakota<\/span> contained the nation&#8217;s two fastest-growing micro areas between 2014 and 2015: <span class=\"xn-location\">Williston<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Dickinson<\/span>, whose populations rose by 9.9 percent and 5.5 percent, respectively.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/li>\n<li>Two micro areas, <span class=\"xn-location\">Bozeman, Mont.<\/span>, and <span class=\"xn-location\">Williston, N.D.<\/span>, each gained more than 3,000 people between 2014 and 2015, increasing by about 3,500, and around 3,200, respectively.\u00a0 <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><span class=\"xn-location\">Puerto Rico<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><span class=\"xn-location\">San Juan<\/span> continued to be the most populous of the municipios (which are similar to counties), with 355,000 residents on <span class=\"xn-chron\">July 1, 2015<\/span>, followed by Bayam\u00f3n and Carolina. <\/li>\n<li>Most municipios experienced a population decline between <span class=\"xn-chron\">July 1, 2014<\/span>, and <span class=\"xn-chron\">July 1, 2015<\/span>. The fastest losing were Lares and Ponce (both at -2.6 percent), followed by Las Marias and Mayag\u00fcez (both at -2.5 percent). <span class=\"xn-location\">San Juan<\/span> experienced the largest numerical population decline, losing about 8,800 residents over the period, followed by Bayam\u00f3n (more than 4,200) and Ponce (more than 3,900). <\/li>\n<li>Gurabo is the only municipio that grew over the period, gaining 176 residents (an increase of 0.4 percent). <\/li>\n<li>Each of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/popest\/data\/municipios\/totals\/2015\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Puerto Rico&#8217;s<\/a> seven metro areas and five micro areas declined in population between 2014 and 2015. <span class=\"xn-location\">San Juan<\/span>-Carolina-Caguas was the most populous metro area, with about 2.2 million people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the coming months, the Census Bureau will release 2015 population estimates of cities and towns, as well as national, state and county population estimates by age, sex, race and Hispanic origin. <\/p>\n<p><b>The Census Bureau develops county, metro area, and micro area population estimates by measuring population change since the most recent census. The Census Bureau uses births, deaths, administrative records and survey data to develop estimates of population.
