{"id":45191,"date":"2016-04-14T12:21:00","date_gmt":"2016-04-14T16:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hispanicprwire.com\/trump-should-issue-plan-to-make-social-security-financially-sound-aarp-ny-50-voter-poll-finds\/"},"modified":"2016-04-14T12:24:04","modified_gmt":"2016-04-14T16:24:04","slug":"trump-debe-presentar-su-plan-para-fortalecer-el-seguro-social-resultados-de-una-encuesta-de-aarp-ny-entre-votantes-50","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hispanicprwire.com\/en\/trump-debe-presentar-su-plan-para-fortalecer-el-seguro-social-resultados-de-una-encuesta-de-aarp-ny-entre-votantes-50\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump Should Issue Plan to Make Social Security Financially Sound, AARP NY 50+ Voter Poll Finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <\/p>\n<div class=\"xn-content\">\n<p><span class=\"xn-location\">ALBANY, N.Y.<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-chron\">April 14, 2016<\/span> \/PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE\/ &#8212; <span class=\"xn-person\">Donald Trump<\/span> is the only presidential candidate who has not laid out a plan to make Social Security financially sound for future generations \u2013 and 88% of <span class=\"xn-location\">New York&#8217;s<\/span> undecided Republican voters 50 and older think he should, according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aarp.org\/research\/topics\/economics\/info-2016\/2016-ny-registered-voters-presidential-primary.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">poll<\/a> of the state&#8217;s largest voting bloc commissioned by AARP.<\/p>\n<p>The survey of 399 Republican and 401 Democratic voters age 50 and above, conducted by Precision Opinion, found <span class=\"xn-location\">New York<\/span> native Trump and former U.S. Senator <span class=\"xn-person\">Hillary Clinton<\/span> of <span class=\"xn-location\">New York<\/span> with commanding leads approaching next Tuesday&#8217;s <span class=\"xn-location\">New York<\/span> presidential primaries \u2013 but with huge numbers of voters undecided.<\/p>\n<p>On the GOP side, businessman Trump was favored by 40% of respondents, with 12% supporting U.S. Senator <span class=\"xn-person\">Ted Cruz<\/span> of <span class=\"xn-location\">Texas<\/span>, 9% backing <span class=\"xn-location\">Ohio<\/span> Governor <span class=\"xn-person\">John Kasich<\/span>, and 36% undecided.<\/p>\n<p>Among Democrats, former First Lady and Secretary of State Clinton had 48%, with U.S. Senator <span class=\"xn-person\">Bernie Sanders<\/span> of <span class=\"xn-location\">Vermont<\/span> at 21%, and 26% undecided.<\/p>\n<p>AARP is a non-partisan social mission organization that does not endorse candidates. But the 38-million-member association \u2013 with 2.6 million members across <span class=\"xn-location\">New York<\/span> \u2013 is conducting a &#8220;Take a Stand&#8221; campaign to urge that all candidates lay out detailed plans to ensure Social Security remains financially sound for future generations.<\/p>\n<p>Due in part to the tireless work of AARP volunteers who&#8217;ve been questioning candidates at events in the battleground states, every presidential candidate has issued a Social Security plan except <a href=\"http:\/\/takeastand.aarp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Donald Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<span class=\"xn-location\">New York&#8217;s<\/span> largest voting bloc is saying loud and clear that presidential candidates should put their Social Security cards on the table,&#8221; said <span class=\"xn-person\">Beth Finkel<\/span>, State Director of AARP in <span class=\"xn-location\">New York State<\/span>. &#8220;The 50+ agree that having a plan to ensure Social Security is financially sound for their children, grandchildren and future generations is a basic threshold for presidential leadership.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The 50+ make up the largest voting bloc in <span class=\"xn-location\">New York<\/span>; they accounted for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/hhes\/www\/socdemo\/voting\/publications\/p20\/2012\/tables.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">57%<\/a> of all votes in the last presidential election in 2012 despite making up less than 52% of the state&#8217;s voting-age population. And nearly 65% of New Yorkers 50 and older went to the polls in the last presidential election, well above the 52% rate among younger voting-age New Yorkers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dataexplorer.aarp.org\/indicator\/191\/social-security-recipients-all-ages-dec-2014-by-state-type-of-benefit#\/rankingTable?dist14=460,459,463,461,462,65&amp;loc=1,34&amp;tf=15&amp;fmt=581,582\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Nearly 3.5 million<\/a> New Yorkers receive Social Security \u2013 including almost nine of every 10 New Yorkers 65 and older. The 80-year-old federal earned benefits program keeps a third of <span class=\"xn-location\">New York&#8217;s<\/span> 65+ population <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/research\/social-security-keeps-22-million-americans-out-of-poverty-a-state-by-state-analysis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">out of poverty<\/a>, and makes up 50% or more of the <a href=\"http:\/\/dataexplorer.aarp.org\/indicator\/208\/reliance-on-social-security-20112013-by-state#\/rankingTable?dist96=523,524&amp;loc=1,34&amp;tf=14&amp;fmt=634,635\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">income<\/a> of nearly half the state&#8217;s 65+ population \u2013 and 90% or more of the income for more than two of every 10 New Yorkers 65 or older.<\/p>\n<p>Among the 50+, the poll found 96% of Democratic and 92% of Republican voters said it&#8217;s important candidates lay out their plans to update Social Security, while 90% of the Democrats and 83% of the Republicans agreed that having a plan for Social Security is a basic threshold for presidential leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Republican women were more likely than GOP men to say it&#8217;s &#8220;very important&#8221; that Trump lay out a plan for Social Security (57% vs. 46%), as were Republican voters earning under <span class=\"xn-money\">$50,000<\/span> a year compared to those making over <span class=\"xn-money\">$100,000<\/span> (65% vs. 44%). Republican men were far more likely than GOP women to say it was &#8220;not important at all&#8221; for Trump to issue a plan (16% vs. 6%).<\/p>\n<p>The telephone poll of registered voters was conducted <span class=\"xn-chron\">April 5-8<\/span>.
