A UNICEF team is on\u00a0the ground assessing the impact of the earthquake on children.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At least\u00a0246\u00a0people have died so far and more than\u00a02,500\u00a0people have been injured. The Government has declared a state of emergency, with the heaviest damage in\u00a0Pedernales, Chone, Muisne, Bah\u00eda de Car\u00e1quez, Manta, Portoviejo, Esmeraldas and Guayaquil.<\/p>\n<p>UNICEF and partners&#8217; first priorities are focused on life-saving interventions, including protecting children and providing them with critically-needed water and sanitation supplies along with tents and school kits. Urgent priorities include preventing the spread of diseases, protecting children who may get separated from their families, providing children with\u00a0psychosocial support and offering them temporary learning opportunities so they can continue their education.<\/p>\n<p>UNICEF has appealed for $1\u00a0million\u00a0to meet the immediate needs of children and families affected by the earthquake.
