The National Weather Service has issued <a href=\"http:\/\/alerts.weather.gov\/cap\/ca.php?x=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">excessive heat warnings<\/a> for multiple areas throughout the state that will last through Sunday. Temperatures well over 100 degrees are predicted in many locations, including the greater <span class=\"xn-location\">San Diego<\/span> area and the Inland Empire east of <span class=\"xn-location\">Los Angeles<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Even some cities in the normally cooler <span class=\"xn-location\">San Francisco Bay Area<\/span> are expected to experience 100+ degree weather, including <a href=\"http:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/MapClick.php?CityName=Concord&amp;state=CA&amp;site=MTR&amp;textField1=37.9781&amp;textField2=-122.03&amp;e=0#.V032yvkrK70\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Concord<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/MapClick.php?lat=37.9063&amp;lon=-122.065#.V032-vkrK70\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Walnut Creek<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Employers need to be aware of the rules that protect workers from heat illness,&#8221; said Cal\/OSHA Chief <span class=\"xn-person\">Juliann Sum<\/span>.\u00a0 &#8220;Water, rest, shade and increased vigilance are absolutely essential in high heat conditions.&#8221;\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p><span class=\"xn-location\">California&#8217;s<\/span> heat regulation requires all employers with outdoor workers to protect outdoor workers by taking these basic steps: <\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Train all employees and supervisors about heat illness prevention. <\/li>\n<li>Provide enough fresh water so that each employee can drink at least 1 quart, or four 8-ounce glasses, of water per hour, and encourage them to do so. <\/li>\n<li>Provide access to shade and encourage employees to take a cool-down rest in the shade for at least 5 minutes. They should not wait until they feel sick to cool down. <\/li>\n<li>Develop and implement written procedures for complying with the Cal\/OSHA <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dir.ca.gov\/title8\/3395.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Heat Illness Prevention Standard<\/a>. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Cal\/OSHA will inspect outdoor worksites in industries such as agriculture, construction, landscaping, and others throughout the heat season. Through partnerships with various employer and worker organizations in different industries, Cal\/OSHA will also provide consultation, outreach and training on heat illness prevention. <\/p>\n<p>Cal\/OSHA&#8217;s award-winning heat illness prevention campaign, the first of its kind in the nation, includes enforcement of heat regulations as well as outreach and training for <span class=\"xn-location\">California&#8217;s<\/span> employers and workers. <\/p>\n<p>Online information on the heat illness prevention requirements and training materials can be obtained at Cal\/OSHA&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dir.ca.gov\/DOSH\/HeatIllnessInfo.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Heat Illness web page<\/a> or the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.99calor.org\/campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Water. A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dir.ca.gov\/DOSH\/etools\/08-006\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Heat Illness Prevention e-tool<\/a> is also available on Cal\/OSHA&#8217;s website.<\/p>\n<p>Cal\/OSHA helps protect workers from health and safety hazards on the job in almost every workplace in <span class=\"xn-location\">California<\/span>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dir.ca.gov\/dosh\/consultation.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Cal\/OSHA&#8217;s Consultation Services Branch<\/a> provides free and voluntary assistance to employers to improve their health and safety programs.
