The study reveals that while consumers traveling to the U.S. did experience the Southwest Effect initially, those average lowest fares have since increased, returning to the levels they were prior to Southwest&#8217;s foray into those markets. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our latest study shows that Southwest Effect did not stick for travelers flying from the <span class=\"xn-location\">Caribbean<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Mexico<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Central America<\/span> to <span class=\"xn-location\">the United States<\/span>,&#8221; said <span class=\"xn-person\">Rick Seaney<\/span>, CEO and co-founder of FareCompare. &#8220;Travelers there saw some initial benefit from increased competition, but fares to the U.S. from these markets have steadily increased in the first half of 2016 and will likely continue to do so in the near future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This conclusion contrasts with the first wave of analysis on the Southwest Effect conducted by the FareCompare team, released in <span class=\"xn-chron\">April 2016<\/span>. That study reported fares from the U.S. to international destinations now served by Southwest dropping 25%. In ensuing months, FareCompare data shows that percentage remained consistent.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The news remains good for U.S. travelers looking for deals on getaways to places like <span class=\"xn-location\">Jamaica<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Belize<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Costa Rica<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Mexico<\/span>,&#8221; Seaney said.<\/p>\n<p>The new report on the Southwest Effect is available at www.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.farecompare.com\/southwesteffect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">farecompare.com\/southwesteffect.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p><b>The Methodology:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>FareCompare analyzes more than 24 billion itineraries daily to find the lowest available prices on existing flights. \u00a0For this project, the team analyzed data from the first quarter of 2015 through the second quarter of 2016 from the following origin cities: <span class=\"xn-location\">Belize<\/span> City, <span class=\"xn-location\">Cancun<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Liberia<\/span> (<span class=\"xn-location\">Costa Rica<\/span>), <span class=\"xn-location\">Mexico City<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Montego Bay<\/span> (<span class=\"xn-location\">Jamaica<\/span>), <span class=\"xn-location\">Puerto Vallarta<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">San Jose<\/span> del Cabo (<span class=\"xn-location\">Mexico<\/span>) and <span class=\"xn-location\">San Jose<\/span> (<span class=\"xn-location\">Costa Rica<\/span>).<\/p>\n<p>When that analysis was completed, flights were then priced from those origins to these destination cities: <span class=\"xn-location\">Atlanta<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Boston<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Dallas-Ft. Worth<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Denver<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Houston<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">New York<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Washington, D.C.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Fares were compared for these airlines: Aeromar, Aeromexico, <span class=\"xn-location\">Alaska<\/span>, Frontier, Interjet, JetBlue, Spirit, Sun Country, Tropic Air and Virgin America. Delta was not included, nor was Southwest which only releases prices on its Web site.<\/p>\n<p>The first analysis compared 72,847 airfare searches the first quarter 2015 with 249,911 airfare searches in the first quarter of 2016 to determine if baseline price changes had occurred. The second analysis compared a total of 1,411,990 airfare searches from <span class=\"xn-chron\">January 2015<\/span> through <span class=\"xn-chron\">June 2016<\/span>, using the same filters applied to the first analysis.<\/p>\n<p>Other factors included in the collected data:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Non-stops and one-stop flights <\/li>\n<li>Round-trip fares only <\/li>\n<li>Length of stay: Between 4 and 14 days <\/li>\n<li>Point of Sale: Outside the U.S. <\/li>\n<li>Advance purchase: Between 14 and 34 days<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The Findings:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>During the first three months of 2015 the average lowest price across markets in the <span class=\"xn-location\">Caribbean<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Mexico<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Central America<\/span> on the aforementioned carriers was <span class=\"xn-money\">$605<\/span>. In the second quarter of 2015 average lowest prices across these markets decreased <span class=\"xn-money\">$50<\/span> to <span class=\"xn-money\">$555<\/span> as the impact of Spirit Airlines service across these markets was felt. JetBlue also expanded service from <span class=\"xn-location\">Liberia<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Montego Bay<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">San Jose<\/span> while Aeromexico added service from <span class=\"xn-location\">Mexico City<\/span> to multiple U.S. markets.<\/p>\n<p>In the third quarter of 2015, average lowest prices continued to decline to <span class=\"xn-money\">$533<\/span>. Major U.S. carriers American, US Airways (before its merger with American) and United along with smaller airlines and low cost carriers all lowered prices. Spirit and Frontier were the trendsetters with average lowest prices for this quarter of <span class=\"xn-money\">$449<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-money\">$454<\/span>, respectively &#8211; undercutting the across-the-board average of <span class=\"xn-money\">$533<\/span> by approximately 16%.<\/p>\n<p>In the last three months of 2015, average lowest prices rose to <span class=\"xn-money\">$572<\/span>, likely reflecting holiday demand. While average lowest prices for JetBlue stalled at <span class=\"xn-money\">$459<\/span>, Spirit and Frontier decreased to <span class=\"xn-money\">$427<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-money\">$341<\/span>, respectively. <\/p>\n<p>While the average lowest price dropped slightly from the last quarter of 2015 to the first quarter of 2016 to <span class=\"xn-money\">$564<\/span>, it jumped back up to <span class=\"xn-money\">$603<\/span> in the second quarter of 2016, approaching the <span class=\"xn-money\">$605<\/span> price point of the first quarter of 2015. During this quarter, Frontier retrenched to <span class=\"xn-location\">Cancun<\/span> origins only, while American prices rose to <span class=\"xn-money\">$552<\/span>, the highest seen for this period of analysis. <span class=\"xn-location\">Alaska<\/span> has the highest average lowest fare at a whopping <span class=\"xn-money\">$1,176<\/span>, while Spirit and JetBlue hold the low positions at <span class=\"xn-money\">$444<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-money\">$479<\/span>, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The analysis over this 18-month period could actually make the case for The Spirit, Frontier or JetBlue Effect,&#8221; Seaney added. &#8220;Regardless, this research cements the importance of competition for consumers regardless of the origin destination.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The research project was led by Dr. <span class=\"xn-person\">James C.
