Today the search begins to identify thousands more who have made meaningful contributions to their communities over the past 12 months, as the awards program kicks off its 22<sup>nd<\/sup> year.<\/p>\n<div id=\"prni_dvprnejpg33a1left\" style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: left; WIDTH: 100%\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"prnejpg33a1left\" title=\"The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards logo\" border=\"0\" alt=\"The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards logo\" align=\"middle\" src=\"http:\/\/photos.prnewswire.com\/prnvar\/20160901\/403687LOGO \"\/><\/div>\n<p>These awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial, Inc. in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), honor outstanding community service by students in grades 5 through 12 at the local, state and national level.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After 21 years of conducting The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, it&#8217;s clear that young volunteers across <span class=\"xn-location\">the United States<\/span> are making meaningful contributions to their communities,&#8221; said Prudential Chairman and CEO <span class=\"xn-person\">John Strangfeld<\/span>. &#8220;By shining a spotlight on their service, we hope that more young people will be inspired to serve their communities and make a difference to the people around them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Young volunteers can apply online at <a href=\"http:\/\/spirit.prudential.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">http:\/\/spirit.prudential.com<\/a> or at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nassp.org\/spirit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">www.nassp.org\/spirit<\/a>. Applications must be completed by <span class=\"xn-chron\">November 8, 2016<\/span>, and then submitted to a middle or high school principal, Girl Scout council, county 4-H agent, American Red Cross chapter, YMCA or HandsOn Network affiliate.\u00a0 Paper versions of the application form are available by calling (877) 525-8491 toll-free.<\/p>\n<p>Participating schools and local organizations will select Local Honorees in early November and present them with Certificates of Achievement.\u00a0 These Local Honorees also will receive the President&#8217;s Volunteer Service Award if they have contributed the minimum number of volunteer hours to qualify (26 hours for age 10 and younger, 50 hours for ages 11-15 and 100 hours for older students).\u00a0 All Local Honorees are then reviewed by a state-level judging committee, which will name the top two candidates from each state and the <span class=\"xn-location\">District of Columbia<\/span> \u2013 one high school student and one middle level student \u2013 as State Honorees on <span class=\"xn-chron\">February 7, 2017<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>These State Honorees will receive <span class=\"xn-money\">$1,000<\/span> awards, engraved silver medallions, and an all-expense-paid trip to <span class=\"xn-location\">Washington, D.C.<\/span>, with a parent or guardian for four days of recognition events <span class=\"xn-chron\">May 6-9<\/span>, 2017.\u00a0 Runners-up at the state level will receive bronze medallions or Certificates of Excellence. <\/p>\n<p>In <span class=\"xn-location\">Washington<\/span>, a distinguished national selection committee will name 10 of the 102 State Honorees as America&#8217;s top youth volunteers of 2017.\u00a0 These National Honorees will receive <span class=\"xn-money\">$5,000<\/span>, gold medallions, crystal trophies for their nominating schools or organizations, and <span class=\"xn-money\">$5,000<\/span> grants from The Prudential Foundation for nonprofit charitable organizations of their choice.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When students serve others through volunteer service, they set a compelling example for their peers in the process,&#8221; said <span class=\"xn-person\">JoAnn Bartoletti<\/span>, executive director of NASSP. &#8220;We look forward to celebrating the initiative and compassion of middle level and high school volunteers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards represent <span class=\"xn-location\">the United States&#8217;<\/span> largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteer service.\u00a0 The awards program also is conducted in <span class=\"xn-location\">Japan<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">South Korea<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Taiwan<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Ireland<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">India<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">China<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Brazil<\/span>, where Prudential has significant business operations. <\/p>\n<p>The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) is the leading organization of and voice for middle level and high school principals, assistant principals, and school leaders from across <span class=\"xn-location\">the United States<\/span>.
