(PRNewsFoto\/National Association of Letter Carriers)\" align=\"middle\" src=\"http:\/\/photos.prnewswire.com\/prnvar\/20110406\/DC78673LOGO\"\/><\/div>\n<p>Other carriers also are being recognized as heroes, for having brightened the lives of children with disabilities, rescued a girl from a vicious dog attack or provided help to families struggling with substance abuse.<\/p>\n<p>The eight honorees represent thousands of letter carriers who not only deliver the mail to 155 million households and businesses across the country six or even seven days a week, but often assist in situations involving car crashes, fires, crimes or health crises or otherwise improve the quality of life in the communities they serve.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"xn-person\">Mark Pizzo<\/span> of <span class=\"xn-location\">Snellville, GA<\/span>, who saved a girl by fighting with a pit bull that had her head in its jaws, is the National Hero of the Year. <span class=\"xn-person\">Bradley Gentz<\/span> of <span class=\"xn-location\">Osage, IA<\/span>, an Army veteran who noticed a boy sitting in a wheelchair on his mail route and transformed the young man&#8217;s life by participating with him in marathons around the country, is Humanitarian of the Year. <span class=\"xn-person\">Michael Murphy<\/span> of <span class=\"xn-location\">Florissant, MO<\/span>, a Marine Corps veteran and Navy reservist who tackled a cinderblock-wielding man attacking women in two cars, is Central Region Hero of the Year.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"xn-person\">David Crestik<\/span> of <span class=\"xn-location\">El Cajon, CA<\/span>, Western Region Hero of the Year, spotted smoke coming from a home and carried an injured resident to safety. <span class=\"xn-person\">Evangeline Johnson<\/span>, of <span class=\"xn-location\">Southfield, MI<\/span>, who is receiving the Carrier Alert Award, helped a woman and her daughter escape from a house engulfed in flames. <span class=\"xn-person\">Patrick Byrne<\/span> of <span class=\"xn-location\">Lynn, MA<\/span>, an Army veteran who helps others break through the stigma of substance abuse after losing his own son, will receive the Education Award.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"xn-person\">Lars Edleblute<\/span> of <span class=\"xn-location\">York, PA<\/span>, who saved a boy who ran from his mother during a heavy downpour and jumped a fence onto a highway, is Eastern Hero of the Year. And letter carriers from <span class=\"xn-location\">Syracuse, NY<\/span>, who delighted a seriously ill child by organizing a parade of postal trucks and other community service vehicles to welcome him home after months in the hospital, will get the Branch Service Award.<\/p>\n<p>The National Association of Letter Carriers Heroes of the Year will be honored by NALC President <span class=\"xn-person\">Fredric Rolando<\/span> at a special luncheon at noon on <span class=\"xn-chron\">Sept. 21<\/span> at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill, 400 New Jersey Ave. NW, <span class=\"xn-location\">Washington, DC<\/span>.
