The average cost paid out for dog bite claims was <span class=\"xn-money\">$33,230<\/span> in 2016, compared with <span class=\"xn-money\">$37,214<\/span> in 2015 and <span class=\"xn-money\">$32,072<\/span> in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The decrease in the 2016 average cost per claim could be attributed to a decrease in severity of injuries,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/III_LorettaW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Loretta Worters<\/a>, a vice president with the I.I.I.\u00a0 &#8220;But the average cost per claim nationally has risen more than 70 percent from 2003 to 2016, due to increased medical costs as well as the size of settlements, judgments and jury awards given to plaintiffs.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p><span class=\"xn-location\">California<\/span> continued to have the largest number of claims in the U.S. at 1,934 in 2016, an increase from 1,684 in 2015. <span class=\"xn-location\">California<\/span> also had the highest claims paid out at <span class=\"xn-money\">$76 million<\/span>.\u00a0The state with the second highest number of claims was <span class=\"xn-location\">Florida<\/span> at 1,325.\u00a0 The state with the highest average cost per claim was <span class=\"xn-location\">New York<\/span>, at a whopping <span class=\"xn-money\">$55,671<\/span> per claim.<\/p>\n<p><b>For more state specific information, go to the I.I.I.&#8217;s <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iii.org\/article\/infographic-dog-bite-liability-claims-2016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><b>interactive map<\/b><\/a><b>. <\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Be A Responsible Dog Owner<\/b><\/p>\n<p>National Dog Bite Prevention Week<sup>\u00ae\u00a0<\/sup>(<span class=\"xn-chron\">April 9-15, 2017<\/span>), is an annual event designed to provide consumers with information on how to be responsible pet owners while increasing awareness of a serious public health issue.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>Even dogs that are normally docile may bite when they are frightened or when defending their puppies, owners or food.
