The programs offered in these agreements are intended to increase\u00a0recall\u00a0remedy completion rates\u00a0for Takata\u00a0airbag\u00a0inflators, among other customer benefits.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>The Takata airbag inflator recall is the largest such action in history and affects more than 42 million vehicles in <span class=\"xn-location\">the United States<\/span>, across 19 automakers. Given the size, scope and severity of the Takata recall, these automakers are the first to agree to a settlement structure to fund consumer outreach, rental car\/loaner programs and out-of-pocket cost reimbursement. The automakers have jointly agreed to provide a total of approximately <span class=\"xn-money\">$553 million<\/span> for these activities. <\/p>\n<p>If the\u00a0proposed\u00a0settlements\u00a0are\u00a0approved\u00a0as final\u00a0by\u00a0the U.S. District Court\u00a0for the Southern\u00a0District of <span class=\"xn-location\">Florida<\/span>, the automakers\u00a0will separately support the following activities, which will\u00a0be conducted under the supervision\u00a0of\u00a0a court-appointed Settlement\u00a0Special\u00a0Administrator, subject to the terms and conditions of each agreement:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><i>Outreach Program<\/i>:\u00a0The Settlement\u00a0Special\u00a0Administrator will oversee and administer outreach programs\u00a0with the goal of significantly increasing\u00a0Takata\u00a0recall\u00a0remedy\u00a0completion rates among\u00a0customers\u00a0of the four automakers through\u00a0traditional and non-traditional\u00a0means. The programs,\u00a0intended to start before final approval of the agreements,\u00a0build upon extensive work these automakers have already done to reach the owners of affected vehicles and will\u00a0be\u00a0conducted in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)&#8217;s\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/sites\/nhtsa.dot.gov\/files\/documents\/factsheet-nhtsa-coordinatedremedyorder-takata.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow\">Coordinated Remedy Program<\/a>.\n<\/li>\n<li><i>Rental Car Loaner Program<\/i>:\u00a0Apart from\u00a0any\u00a0existing rental car loaner programs,\u00a0the automakers\u00a0will make rental or loaner vehicles available\u00a0upon request\u00a0to\u00a0eligible\u00a0customers, as defined in the respective settlement agreements, and for whom parts are not available within 30 days. This program will begin 30 days after preliminary approval of the agreement.\n<\/li>\n<li><i>Out-of-Pocket-Claims and\u00a0Residual Distribution<\/i>:\u00a0Eligible customers may submit requests for reimbursement\u00a0of reasonable out-of-pocket expenses related to the\u00a0Takata\u00a0airbag inflator recalls\u00a0and\/or\u00a0may\u00a0register for\u00a0residual payments.\u00a0The Settlement\u00a0Special\u00a0Administrator\u00a0will determine the types of reimbursable costs\u00a0and class members&#8217;\u00a0eligibility\u00a0to receive payments for\u00a0these\u00a0claims. \u00a0\n<\/li>\n<li><i>Fees and Administration<\/i>: Costs related to class member notification, claims administration, attorneys&#8217; fees\u00a0and expenses,\u00a0class representative awards, and any other costs\u00a0are also covered under the proposed settlements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Further,\u00a0in addition to performing the recall remedy, the automakers will each offer a Customer Support Program\u00a0(CSP)\u00a0for vehicles covered by these proposed settlements.\u00a0The\u00a0CSPs will provide prospective coverage for repairs\u00a0and adjustments\u00a0(including parts and labor)\u00a0needed to correct defects in materials or workmanship in\u00a0the\u00a0Takata\u00a0phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (&#8220;PSAN&#8221;) inflators contained in the\u00a0affected airbag modules\u00a0or\u00a0any replacement inflators installed as part of the remedy, subject to\u00a0the\u00a0terms and conditions\u00a0of each agreement.<\/p>\n<p>These\u00a0agreements\u00a0cover the four automakers&#8217; vehicles\u00a0already recalled\u00a0or subject to any future recall for Takata PSAN inflators used in driver or front passenger airbag modules,*\u00a0as described in NHTSA&#8217;s\u00a02015 Consent Orders and any amendments.
