The Coalition for Future Mobility \u2013 a growing coalition of twelve transportation, passenger safety, and consumer interest stakeholders \u2013 today urged the timely and thoughtful passage of federal self-driving vehicle legislation now before Congress.\u00a0 HR 3388, the Self Drive Act, unanimously passed the U.S. House Energy &amp; the group said in a statement.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>The coalition continued, &#8220;The list of benefits automation can provide touch every angle of personal mobility.\u00a0 According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, 35,092 people died in traffic crashes in 2015, and 94 percent of all crashes include human error as a factor.\u00a0 Highly Automated Vehicles (HAVs) and related technologies can help address crashes related to human error.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Getting HAV technologies on the road is important to Floridians.\u00a0 Consider:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><span class=\"xn-location\">Florida<\/span> averages over 1,000 traffic accidents each day, a nine percent increase over the prior year.<sup>1<\/sup><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"xn-location\">Florida&#8217;s<\/span> traffic fatality rate is higher than the national average.<sup>2<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>With the highest percentage of population aged 65 or older (17.3 percent), more senior traffic fatalities (539) occur in <span class=\"xn-location\">Florida<\/span> than any other state.<sup>3<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Another 388 fatalities occurred in accidents by young <span class=\"xn-location\">Florida<\/span> drivers aged 15 to 20. <sup>4<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Almost one-third of <span class=\"xn-location\">Florida&#8217;s<\/span> 2,939 annual traffic fatalities involved a young\/inexperienced or senior driver (31 percent).<sup>5<\/sup><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"xn-location\">Florida<\/span> has the highest number of car\/pedestrian fatalities in the nation.<sup>6<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>More per capita fatal car-bike accidents occur in <span class=\"xn-location\">Florida<\/span> than any other state.<sup>7<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>More vehicle-related drowning fatalities occur in <span class=\"xn-location\">Florida<\/span> than any other state.<sup>8<\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The development and deployment of HAVs can greatly improve these statistics as well as promise cleaner air and enhanced independence and self-sufficiency.\u00a0 Federal leadership is critical if <span class=\"xn-location\">the United States<\/span> is to continue as a place of innovation, development, and ultimately deployment of such vehicle technologies.<\/p>\n<p>With his position as Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science &amp;
