Rodriguez for Direct Relief) \" align=\"middle\" src=\"https:\/\/mma.prnewswire.com\/media\/726773\/Direct_Relief_Solar_Panels.jpg\"\/><\/div>\n<p>The announcement was made at a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.directrelief.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Direct Relief<\/a>-convened meeting of <span class=\"xn-location\">Puerto Rico<\/span> health and community leaders about strategies to restore and strengthen <span class=\"xn-location\">Puerto Rico&#8217;s<\/span> healthcare system.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting was kicked off by <span class=\"xn-location\">Puerto Rico&#8217;s<\/span> Secretary of Health, Dr. <span class=\"xn-person\">Rafael Rodriguez Mercado<\/span>, and included more than 100 leaders of <span class=\"xn-location\">Puerto Rico&#8217;s<\/span> nonprofit community health centers and hospitals as well as other community leaders who advised on how philanthropy can best restore and strengthen health services throughout the territory: <\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Dr. <span class=\"xn-person\">Satchit Balsari<\/span>, Harvard Professor and co-author of the widely reported study, &#8220;Mortality in <span class=\"xn-location\">Puerto Rico<\/span> after Hurricane Maria&#8221;\n<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"xn-person\">Jay Fonseca<\/span>, journalist, political analyst, and founder and board member of Por Los Nuestros\n<\/li>\n<li>Dr. <span class=\"xn-person\">Antonia Novello<\/span>, former U.S. Surgeon General\n<\/li>\n<li>Dr. <span class=\"xn-person\">Byron Scott<\/span>, Medical Director, IBM Watson Health and Direct Relief board member\n<\/li>\n<li>Malvise Scott, Senior Vice President, National Association of Community Health Centers\n<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"xn-person\">Thomas Tighe<\/span>, president and CEO, Direct Relief\n<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"xn-person\">Yulun Wang<\/span>, founder of telehealth company InTouch Health<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <span class=\"xn-money\">$12.3 million<\/span> in Direct Relief&#8217;s new financial commitments will support solar power and battery storage installations, mobile health units, medical equipment, emergency communications technology, and emergency preparedness and response training.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>Direct Relief today also reported its activities to date for its Puerto Rican response. Since Hurricane Maria made landfall, Direct Relief has supported 67 local community health centers and clinics, hospitals, and other health providers with 403 emergency shipments of requested medication and supplies. The shipments contained more than 358 tons (761,067 lbs) of medical essentials totaling more than <span class=\"xn-money\">$67.8 million<\/span> (wholesale) and 9.1 million defined daily doses.
