They were selected first from a field of more than 29,000 middle level and high school youth volunteers nationwide, and then from 102 State Honorees, based on their initiative, effort, impact, and the personal growth demonstrated in the course of their volunteer service. The National Honorees each received <span class=\"xn-money\">$5<\/span>,000\u00a0personal awards, engraved gold medallions, crystal trophies for their schools, and <span class=\"xn-money\">$5,000<\/span> grants from The Prudential Foundation for charities of their choice.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s ceremony was part of a four-day celebration that brought each state&#8217;s top two youth volunteers of 2019 to <span class=\"xn-location\">Washington, D.C.<\/span>, for sightseeing and special recognition events. These State Honorees \u2013 one middle level and one high school student from each state and the <span class=\"xn-location\">District of Columbia<\/span> \u2013 were personally congratulated by award-winning actress <span class=\"xn-person\">Viola Davis<\/span> last night at a gala dinner reception at the Smithsonian&#8217;s National Museum of Natural History. Each State Honoree received a <span class=\"xn-money\">$1,000<\/span> award.<\/p>\n<p>These are the 10 National Honorees named today:<br \/><b><span class=\"xn-person\">Grace Beal<\/span>, 17, of <span class=\"xn-location\">New Castle, Pennsylvania<\/span>,<\/b>\u00a0a junior at Neshannock Senior High School, organized an annual basketball-based fundraising event that has raised more than <span class=\"xn-money\">$100,000<\/span> since 2014 for Children&#8217;s Hospital of <span class=\"xn-location\">Pittsburgh<\/span>, where her sister was treated before she died of congenital heart failure. <\/p>\n<p><b><span class=\"xn-person\">Aja Capel<\/span>, 15, of <span class=\"xn-location\">Urbana, Illinois<\/span>,<\/b>\u00a0a member of <span class=\"xn-location\">Champaign County<\/span> 4-H and a junior at Urbana High School, serves as the lead robotics instructor at a local science museum and has launched an initiative to give minority students more opportunities to learn about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). <\/p>\n<p><b><span class=\"xn-person\">Alexander Fultz<\/span>, 13, of <span class=\"xn-location\">Pineville, North Carolina<\/span>, <\/b>an eighth-grader at Metrolina Regional Scholars Academy, created a nonprofit organization that has donated thousands of toys and clothing items to hospitals in several states to brighten the days of hospitalized patients.<\/p>\n<p><b>Samaia A. Goodrich, 11, of <span class=\"xn-location\">Syracuse, New York<\/span>,<\/b>\u00a0a sixth-grader at Expeditionary Learning Middle School, organizes projects in her community to encourage inner-city youth to make a difference, including an effort to raise money to buy Christmas presents, clothes and household goods for families who moved from <span class=\"xn-location\">Puerto Rico<\/span> to <span class=\"xn-location\">Syracuse<\/span> after Hurricane Maria devastated their homeland. <\/p>\n<p><b><span class=\"xn-person\">Hannah Karanick<\/span>, 13, of <span class=\"xn-location\">Anaheim, California<\/span><\/b>, an eighth-grader at Orangeview Junior High School, established a &#8220;closet&#8221; at her former elementary school that provides new clothing, laundry products, toiletries, quilts and school supplies to students there whose families can&#8217;t afford to buy such necessities. <\/p>\n<p><b><span class=\"xn-person\">Caleb Oh<\/span>, 14, of <span class=\"xn-location\">Gambrills, Maryland<\/span>, <\/b>an eighth-grader at Crofton Middle School, has spent more than 1,000 hours volunteering in many ways over the past seven years to aid people who are homeless, hungry or have other needs. <\/p>\n<p><b>Caragan Olles, 16, of <span class=\"xn-location\">De Pere, Wisconsin<\/span>,<\/b>\u00a0a junior at Notre Dame Academy, co-founded a nonprofit organization in 2013 that has raised more than <span class=\"xn-money\">$160,000<\/span> to provide special tutoring for students with dyslexia, create dyslexia resource centers in three public library systems, and educate teachers and parents about this learning disability.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b><span class=\"xn-person\">Vance Tomasi<\/span>, 13, of <span class=\"xn-location\">Tampa, Florida<\/span>,<\/b>\u00a0a seventh-grader at Farnell Middle School, has worked with a friend to collect and donate more than 90,000 books to families, schools, group homes, hospitals and libraries over the past two years. <\/p>\n<p><b><span class=\"xn-person\">Allison Tu<\/span>, 17, of <span class=\"xn-location\">Louisville, Kentucky<\/span>,<\/b>\u00a0a senior at duPont <span class=\"xn-person\">Manual High School<\/span>, launched a youth-driven initiative to raise awareness of student mental health issues and find ways to combat the alarmingly high rates of depression, anxiety and suicide among young people in <span class=\"xn-location\">Kentucky<\/span>. <\/p>\n<p><b><span class=\"xn-person\">Joseph Voynik<\/span>, 17, of <span class=\"xn-location\">Flowood, Mississippi<\/span>, <\/b>a senior at Jackson Preparatory School, worked for four years and raised more than <span class=\"xn-money\">$600,000<\/span> to construct a fully accessible baseball field so that children with disabilities could experience the joy of playing America&#8217;s national pastime. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re impressed and inspired by the way these honorees have identified problems facing their communities and stepped up to the challenge to make a difference,&#8221;
