But it finds the nation has failed to tear down barriers affecting children of color.<\/p>\n<p>The <i>2019 KIDS COUNT<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> Data Book<\/i> will be available <span class=\"xn-chron\">June 17<\/span> at <span class=\"xn-chron\">12:01 a.m. EDT<\/span> at <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=2497216-1&amp;h=1946184256&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.aecf.org%2F&amp;a=www.aecf.org\" rel=\"nofollow\">www.aecf.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All of the 74 million kids in our increasingly diverse country have unlimited potential, and we have the data, knowledge and evidence to create the policies that will help them realize it,&#8221; said Casey Foundation president and CEO, <span class=\"xn-person\">Lisa Hamilton<\/span>.<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Children in <span class=\"xn-location\">the United States<\/span> had a better chance at thriving in 2017 than in 1990 \u2014 with improvements in 11 of the 16 KIDS COUNT index measures of child well-being \u2014 but racial and ethnic disparities persisted. <\/li>\n<li>One in six American kids grew up in poverty. <\/li>\n<li>2017 was the first year since 2010 that saw an increase in the <i>number<\/i> of uninsured kids. <\/li>\n<li><span class=\"xn-location\">New Hampshire<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">Massachusetts<\/span> are again in first and second place in the <i>Data Book<\/i> state rankings, followed by <span class=\"xn-location\">Iowa<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Minnesota<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-location\">New Jersey<\/span>. <\/li>\n<li><span class=\"xn-location\">Mississippi<\/span> (48), <span class=\"xn-location\">Louisiana<\/span> (49) and <span class=\"xn-location\">New Mexico<\/span> (50) are again the lowest-ranked states. <\/li>\n<li>The South and West contain the 18 lowest-ranked states.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The 2019 <i>Data Book<\/i> also explores the growth in America&#8217;s child population since 1990.<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>The U.S. child population increased from 64.2 million to 73.7 million between 1990 and 2017. <\/li>\n<li>All 15 of the states where growth in the child population outpaced the national average since 1990 are in the South or West.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The percentage of American children who were Latino more than doubled from 12 to 26 percent. The proportion of Asian and Pacific Islander children also doubled, from 3 to 6 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Direct lines can be drawn between areas of improvement in well-being\u2014 and policies that have supported these successes.
