Corruption is a major concern for ordinary people; 85 per cent of those surveyed believe government corruption is &#8220;a big problem&#8221;.<\/p>\n<div id=\"prni_dvprnejpg9c2dleft\" style=\"WIDTH: 100%; TEXT-ALIGN: left\" dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"prnejpg9c2dleft\" title=\" \" border=\"0\" alt=\" \" align=\"middle\" src=\"https:\/\/mma.prnewswire.com\/media\/999326\/Bribery_rates_by_country_GCB_2019_LAC_Infographic.jpg\" imagelabel=\"General\"\/><\/div>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=2588686-1&amp;h=3728038552&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.transparency.org%2Fgcb10%2Flatin-america-and-the-caribbean%3F%2Fgcb10%2Flac&amp;a=Read+the+report\" rel=\"nofollow\">Read the report<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The report, entitled, <b><i>Global Corruption Barometer (GCB) &#8212; <span class=\"xn-location\">Latin America<\/span> and the <span class=\"xn-location\">Caribbean<\/span><\/i><\/b>, for the first time shows <b>one in five people experiences sexual extortion<\/b> when accessing a government service, like health care or education, or knows someone who has. <\/p>\n<p>Data also shows that 71 per cent\u00a0of people think that sextortion happens\u00a0at least occasionally.<sup>\u00a0<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Equally troubling, <b>one in four people was offered a bribe<\/b> in exchange for votes at national, regional or local elections in the past five years. In a damning indictment of low trust in government, <b>65 per cent think their government is run by and for a few private interests<\/b>. <\/p>\n<p>These alarming statistics underscore the disproportionate effect that corruption has on women, and suggests a significant lack of political integrity among government leaders.\u00a0The <b>office of the President and Prime Minister, as well as Members of Parliament, are seen as the most corrupt<\/b> group or institution by 53 and 52 per cent of people respectively.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Too often, presidents, parliamentarians and other political leaders act in their own self-interest, at the expense of the citizens they serve,&#8221; said <span class=\"xn-person\">Delia Ferreira Rubio<\/span>, Chair of Transparency International. &#8220;In a region where anti-corruption efforts are building momentum despite recent setbacks, citizens continue to demand more and better from their governments.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>People&#8217;s actual experience with bribery is similarly concerning. More than\u00a0one in\u00a0five\u00a0people who access public services, have to pay a bribe.\u00a0<b>This is equivalent to\u00a0approximately\u00a056\u00a0million citizens.<\/b> <\/p>\n<p>Across the region, <b>police earn the highest bribery rate (24 per cent)<\/b>, while other services like utilities, including electricity and water, are close behind (19 per cent).\u00a0<b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Despite these challenges, an overwhelming majority of people remain hopeful. <b>Seventy-seven per cent believe ordinary citizens can make a difference in the fight against corruption<\/b>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Citizens have the right to report corruption and expect that politicians act with integrity,&#8221; said <span class=\"xn-person\">Patricia Moreira<\/span>, Managing Director of Transparency International. &#8220;Corruption eats away at society and undermines institutions.
