The Montefiore-Einstein Addiction Medicine Fellowship, started in\u00a02019, continues to expand our commitment to advancing substance use disorder treatment in the <span class=\"xn-location\">Bronx<\/span> community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are proud of our\u00a0long-established programs, but now more than ever, we need to increase the number of physicians equipped to treat those with substance use disorders and our presence in community-based settings,&#8221; said Shadi Nahvi,\u00a0M.D.,\u00a0M.S., director, Addiction Medicine Fellowship program at Montefiore and Einstein, and associate professor\u00a0of\u00a0medicine\u00a0and of\u00a0psychiatry\u00a0and\u00a0behavioral\u00a0sciences\u00a0at Einstein.<\/p>\n<p>The five-year\u00a0HHS grant will fund an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-addiction medicine\u00a0fellowship\u00a0program\u00a0to train new doctors on a team approach which includes nurses, counselors, social workers, nursing homes, pharmacists and community-based organizations so treatment can start as early as possible, regardless of where people are seeking help.<\/p>\n<p>Training will occur at clinical settings like the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=2853953-1&amp;h=1160001573&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.montefiore.org%2Fpsychiatry-services-substance-abuse-treatment&amp;a=Montefiore+Einstein+Division+of+Substance+Abuse\" rel=\"nofollow\">Montefiore Einstein Division of Substance Abuse<\/a>\u00a0and the Montefiore Buprenorphine Treatment Network, which for decades been a leader in using medication to support treatment of opioid and alcohol abuse disorders and providing primary care.<\/p>\n<p>The fellows will then complete their training at organizations like\u00a0New\u00a0York Harm Reduction Educators, which\u00a0provides\u00a0safe syringes and engages people\u00a0who use drugs.\u00a0Additionally, the fellows will partner\u00a0with community groups, including BronxWorks,\u00a0the Harm Reduction Coalition,\u00a0the Osborne Association, the Drug Policy Alliance,\u00a0and\u00a0the NYC\u00a0Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to improve care.<\/p>\n<p>By having clinicians\u00a0in community locations that\u00a0provide\u00a0critical services like food and shelter, Montefiore doctors can prescribe buprenorphine to prevent withdrawal and block the pleasurable effects of using opioids and be primary care doctors when needed, treating conditions such as HIV and Hepatitis C.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our hope is that by partnering closely with our community, our addiction medicine fellows can become change agents &#8211; and rethink how to deliver the best care possible during this pandemic and well into the future,&#8221; said Dr. Nahvi.<\/p>\n<p><b>About Montefiore Health System<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Montefiore Health System is one of <span class=\"xn-location\">New York&#8217;s<\/span> premier academic health systems and is a recognized leader in providing exceptional quality and personalized, accountable care to approximately three million people in communities across the <span class=\"xn-location\">Bronx<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-location\">Westchester<\/span> and the Hudson Valley.
