Foyt in career championships won.<\/p>\n<div id=\"prni_dvprnejpg2793left\" style=\"WIDTH: 100%; TEXT-ALIGN: left\" dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"prnejpg2793left\" title=\"Scott Dixon scored his sixth INDYCAR Drivers' Championship Sunday at the season-ending Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, while Honda claimed its third consecutive Manufacturers' Title.\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Scott Dixon scored his sixth INDYCAR Drivers' Championship Sunday at the season-ending Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, while Honda claimed its third consecutive Manufacturers' Title.\" align=\"middle\" imagelabel=\"General\" src=\"https:\/\/mma.prnewswire.com\/media\/1319587\/Honda_Racing_Scott_Dixon.jpg\"\/><\/div>\n<p>For Honda and Honda Performance Development, the company&#8217;s North American racing division, today&#8217;s result marks the first championship &#8220;three-peat&#8221; of titles in the 27-year history of HPD.\u00a0 Entering Indy car competition in 1994, Honda won its first manufacturers&#8217; title in 1996.\u00a0 Additional championships followed in 1998-99, 2001, 2004-05, and 2018-19.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>Dixon&#8217;s championship is the 17<sup>th<\/sup> for a Honda-powered Indy car driver, and the 11<sup>th<\/sup> with multi-manufacturer competition.\u00a0 Now a Honda Indy car team owner, <span class=\"xn-person\">Jimmy Vasser<\/span> won Honda&#8217;s first drivers&#8217; title in 1996.\u00a0 Other Honda-powered Indy car champions include <span class=\"xn-person\">Alex Zanardi<\/span> (1997-98); <span class=\"xn-person\">Juan Pablo Montoya<\/span> (1999); <span class=\"xn-person\">Gil de Ferran<\/span> (2000-01); <span class=\"xn-person\">Tony Kanaan<\/span> (2004); <span class=\"xn-person\">Dan Wheldon<\/span> (2005); <span class=\"xn-person\">Sam Hornish Jr.<\/span> (2006); <span class=\"xn-person\">Dario Franchitti<\/span> (2007, 2009-11); and Dixon (2008, 2013, 2018, 2020).<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s 100-lap season finale took place in hot and very humid conditions, resulting in a brief, light rain shower with approximately 20 laps remaining.\u00a0 Pole qualifier <span class=\"xn-person\">Will Power<\/span> led the opening five laps, but was soon passed by Andretti Autosport&#8217;s <span class=\"xn-person\">Alexander Rossi<\/span>, who went on to lead a race-high 61 laps before ending his day with wall contact on Lap 74.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>Other Honda-powered race leaders included <span class=\"xn-person\">Colton Herta<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-person\">Graham Rahal<\/span>, <span class=\"xn-person\">James Hinchcliffe<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-person\">Alex Palou<\/span>.\u00a0 But shortly after Rossi&#8217;s crash, Herta also slid off course, leading to an 11<sup>th<\/sup>-place finish.\u00a0 Just moments later, Hinchcliffe was the next to fall victim to the tricky conditions, spinning in the final turn and then colliding with fellow Honda driver <span class=\"xn-person\">Jack Harvey<\/span> as he attempted to rejoin the circuit.\u00a0 Both would have to pit for repairs, dropping them out of the lead pack. Palou&#8217;s fuel gamble came up this a few laps shy of a podium finish, as his late stop for a splash dropped him to 13<sup>th<\/sup> at the checkers.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, after starting 11<sup>th<\/sup> \u2013 and needing only a top-10 finish to clinch the title \u2013 Dixon methodically worked his way to the front, moving into third on Lap 80.\u00a0 Combined with four wins during the 14-race season, the podium result was more than enough for Dixon to claim the title.<\/p>\n<p><b><u>Next<br \/><\/u><\/b>Sunday&#8217;s race concludes Honda&#8217;s championship-winning 2020 NTT IndyCar Series.
