This has been made possible through a generous endowment contribution from <span class=\"xn-person\">Elizabeth and Phill Gross<\/span> and their family. <\/p>\n<div id=\"prni_dvprnejpg9a0dleft\" style=\"WIDTH: 100%; TEXT-ALIGN: left\" dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"prnejpg9a0dleft\" title=\"American Cancer Society Logo\" border=\"0\" alt=\"American Cancer Society Logo\" align=\"middle\" imagelabel=\"General\" src=\"https:\/\/mma.prnewswire.com\/media\/1435180\/ACS_Logo_Reupload_Logo.jpg\"\/><\/div>\n<p>The\u00a0initial\u00a0investment will be made to launch <i>Diversity in Cancer Research<\/i> internships, which will offer biomedical\u00a0cancer research\u00a0internships for undergraduate students\u00a0from\u00a0racial and ethnic\u00a0backgrounds that are\u202funderrepresented in the scientific community.\u202f\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The American Cancer Society&#8217;s goal is to decrease the U.S. cancer death rate by an additional 40% by 2035,&#8221; said American Cancer Society\u00a0Chief\u00a0Executive\u00a0Officer\u00a0Gary\u00a0Reedy. &#8220;To accomplish this ambitious plan, we must tackle the racial health disparities that exist in cancer. This includes addressing the critical need for diversity and inclusion in the scientific workforce by increasing the proportion of researchers and clinicians of color. We are so grateful to Elizabeth and Phill\u00a0Gross for their generous funding of this game-changing initiative.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>According to data from the National Institute of Health, the number of grant applications from Black and Latino\u00a0scientists\u00a0are very low, just 2 percent and\u00a04 percent,\u00a0respectively. This inevitably translates to fewer people of color entering career stages in cancer research.\u00a0The <i>Diversity in Cancer Research <\/i>program<i>\u00a0<\/i>will build on the American Cancer Society&#8217;s existing research career development grant programs by promoting\u00a0the training of undergraduate\u00a0students\u00a0underrepresented in biomedical cancer research and encouraging the pursuit of careers that will increase diversity in cancer research.\u00a0\u00a0A\u00a0more diverse scientific workforce is critical to\u00a0invigorating\u00a0problem-solving, driving\u00a0innovation, and\u00a0ultimately better\u00a0equipping\u00a0the scientific community\u00a0to\u00a0address inequities that exist in cancer prevention, treatment,\u00a0and care.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the fight against cancer, advancements in research provide the best hope for saving millions more lives,&#8221; said <span class=\"xn-person\">Elizabeth Gross<\/span>. &#8220;Phill and I believe that creating opportunities for a more diverse community of cancer researchers will not only spur innovation and ingenuity, but it will help eradicate health disparities, build trust across these various communities and advance cancer care for everyone. It is our joy to assist in this important work alongside the American Cancer Society.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To begin, 40 internships\u202fper year for 10 years will be granted under the &#8220;American Cancer Society\/Gross Family\u202fDiversity in Research Internship&#8221;\u202fname.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In addition, an advisory committee\u00a0has been\u00a0formed to focus on the implementation of the\u202finternship program and lead the development of new programs under the umbrella.
