(Photo: Edmundo Montes de Oca, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico.) \" align=\"middle\" imagelabel=\"General\" src=\"https:\/\/mma.prnewswire.com\/media\/1458531\/Direct_Relief_March_16_Event.jpg\"\/><\/div>\n<p>Last year, there were\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3100590-1&amp;h=4185518562&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cdc.gov%2Fglobalhealth%2Fimmunization%2Fwpd%2Findex.html&amp;a=441+reported+polio+cases\" rel=\"nofollow\">441 reported polio cases<\/a>\u00a0worldwide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n<p>While the last-known case of the crippling disease in <span class=\"xn-location\">the United States<\/span> was in 1979, the CDC recommends that all children should receive a series of four polio shots.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No country is safe from polio until the virus has been eradicated globally,&#8221; says the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3100590-1&amp;h=4100210606&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.euro.who.int%2Fen%2Fhealth-topics%2Fcommunicable-diseases%2Fpoliomyelitis%2Fnews%2Fnews%2F2016%2F04%2Fpoliomyelitis-polio-and-the-vaccines-used-to-eradicate-it-questions-and-answers&amp;a=World+Health+Organization.\" rel=\"nofollow\">World Health Organization.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"xn-location\">Ecuador<\/span> last month launched a national campaign to inoculate infants against polio, but it ran short of the vaccine doses needed.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"xn-location\">Ecuador&#8217;s<\/span> Ministry of Public Health issued an international appeal for polio vaccine to organizations including Direct Relief and nations including <span class=\"xn-location\">Mexico<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>In its communication to Direct Relief, the Ministry warned of &#8220;a critical shortage of basic vaccines&#8221; as a side effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. <span class=\"xn-location\">Ecuador<\/span> requested 95,000 doses of the polio vaccine and 138,000 doses of other vaccines commonly given to children.<\/p>\n<p>The Government of <span class=\"xn-location\">Mexico<\/span> responded to the appeal, offering to donate the polio vaccine from its stockpile at the national vaccine agency BIRMEX.<\/p>\n<p>To transport the humanitarian aid, <span class=\"xn-location\">Mexico&#8217;s<\/span> government turned to Direct Relief, which is registered as a civil association in\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3100590-1&amp;h=907667744&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.directrelief.org%2Fplace%2Fmexico%2F&amp;a=Mexico\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"xn-location\">Mexico<\/span><\/a>\u00a0with tax-deductible status (<i>donataria autorizada<\/i>).<\/p>\n<p>Like most vaccines, the polio vaccine is a cold-chain medication; it must be kept refrigerated at all times to between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius, delivered in special containers, with the temperature monitored.<\/p>\n<p>Pharmaceutical distributors\u2014and Direct Relief\u2014are among the only organizations with\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3100590-1&amp;h=2443261353&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.directrelief.org%2F2020%2F09%2Fdirect-relief-prepares-for-covid-19-vaccine-distribution-investing-2-5-million-to-expand-cold-chain-capacity%2F&amp;a=cold-chain\" rel=\"nofollow\">cold-chain<\/a>\u00a0vaccine shipment capability.<\/p>\n<p>Direct Relief has extensive experience working with the world&#8217;s largest medical manufacturers to distribute cold-chain prescription medications connected with humanitarian and emergency-response efforts.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, Direct Relief completed 1,953 cold-chain deliveries of such products, managing end-to-end distribution to health facilities across <span class=\"xn-location\">the United States<\/span> and 52 other countries.
