This is especially important for people who are opting for smaller gatherings at home that may include fireworks or firecrackers. <\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3210006-1&amp;h=2872371646&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.americanpyro.com%2Fassets%2Fdocs%2FFactsandFigures%2FFireworks%2520Consump.%2520Figures%25202000-2020.pdf&amp;a=Sales+of+consumer+fireworks\" rel=\"nofollow\">Sales of consumer fireworks<\/a>\u00a0in 2020 well surpassed those in previous years, likely driven by the stay-at-home circumstances forced by the COVID-19 pandemic. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3210006-1&amp;h=4055064027&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.americanpyro.com%2Fassets%2Fdocs%2FFactsandFigures%2FFireworks%2520Related%2520Injuries%2520%2528table%2529%25201976%2520-2020.pdf&amp;a=The+number+of+injuries\" rel=\"nofollow\">The number of injuries<\/a>, too, eclipsed those of prior years. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, 16% of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3210006-1&amp;h=554841413&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cpsc.gov%2FSafety-Education%2FSafety-Education-Centers%2FFireworks&amp;a=fireworks+injuries\" rel=\"nofollow\">fireworks injuries<\/a> are to the head, face, and ears. Yet hearing protection is largely overlooked in advice to the public on holiday safety, much of which is centered on obvious physical injuries such as burns. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We absolutely want people to enjoy their <span class=\"xn-chron\">July 4th<\/span> after a tough year, but we don&#8217;t want anyone to wake up the next day with permanent hearing loss or ringing in their ears,&#8221; said ASHA President <span class=\"xn-person\">A. Lynn Williams<\/span>, PhD, CCC-SLP. &#8220;While ASHA always encourages vigilance at public fireworks displays, the risk to hearing is especially pronounced for those celebrating at home\u2014who will likely be much closer to where fireworks are being launched than they would be at a large event.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p><b>Damage in an Instant<br \/><\/b>A <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3210006-1&amp;h=3208845589&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.asha.org%2Fpublic%2Fhearing%2Floud-noise-dangers%2F&amp;a=single+loud+blast+or+explosion\" rel=\"nofollow\">single loud blast or explosion<\/a> that lasts for less than 1 second can cause permanent hearing loss right away. This noise, called <i>impulse noise<\/i> or <i>impact noise,<\/i> can come from sources such as fireworks or gunfire. Impulse noise is measured in decibel peak pressure, or dBP. Impulse noise greater than 140 dBP will hurt a person&#8217;s hearing right away. Fireworks at 3 feet, as well as firecrackers, can measure 150 dBP. This is considered painful to the ears\u2014and is well beyond a safe listening level (75\u201380 decibels). <\/p>\n<p>Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is completely preventable. However, once it occurs, it is irreversible. Exposure to noisy leisure activities is among the chief culprits of NIHL in young adults, according to the World Health Organization\u2014which states that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3210006-1&amp;h=4099750375&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.who.int%2Factivities%2Fmaking-listening-safe%2Fmaking-listening-safe&amp;a=1.1+billion\" rel=\"nofollow\">1.1 billion<\/a> people ages 12\u201335 worldwide are at risk. Despite this, a recent <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3210006-1&amp;h=744798791&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.asha.org%2Fsiteassets%2Fbhsm%2F2021%2Fasha-bhsm-2021-report.pdf&amp;a=ASHA+poll\" rel=\"nofollow\">ASHA poll<\/a> of American adults shows that close to half (49%) of respondents said that they don&#8217;t take any basic protective measures when it comes to their hearing.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p><b>Hearing Protection Advice<br \/><\/b>By taking some simple precautionary steps, Americans can protect themselves and their families. ASHA advises the following: <\/p>\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li><b>Use hearing protection.<\/b>\u00a0Basic earplugs offer good protection for most teens and adults. Children are generally better off wearing well-fitting earmuffs instead of earplugs. <\/li>\n<li><b>Keep a safe distance.<\/b>\u00a0Stand at least 500 feet away from noise sources, such as a fireworks launch site. The closer you are, the more likely you are to hurt your ears. <\/li>\n<li><b>Know your limits.<\/b>\u00a0If you are experiencing ringing in your ears or any other ear discomfort, leave the noisy situation. Listen to your body!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&#8220;I encourage the public to pick up a few sets of earplugs when they&#8217;re out stocking up on barbeque supplies,&#8221; ASHA President Williams adds. &#8220;Most drug stores or supermarkets carry them, and they&#8217;re inexpensive and tremendously effective at protecting hearing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For anyone who may be experiencing pain or ringing in the ears, or who is having difficulty hearing, following <span class=\"xn-chron\">July 4th<\/span> or any loud event, ASHA recommends contacting a certified audiologist for a hearing evaluation.
