Purpura Department of Neuroscience at Einstein. <\/p>\n<p><b>Supporting Parents With High Stress <br \/><\/b>The Montefiore-Einstein study will enroll 360 Bronx parents and other primary caregivers for kids and teens. The participants, who will receive psychological support, will be selected from among three groups who face unique vulnerabilities during the on-going COVID-19 pandemic:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Parents and caregivers of children who have autoimmune illnesses like lupus and juvenile arthritis, and may develop serious illness following COVID-19 infection\u00a0 <\/li>\n<li>Parents and caregivers of children who have existing psychiatric conditions and are at higher risk for pandemic-related anxiety and depression <\/li>\n<li>Frontline healthcare workers at Montefiore who are parents under increased stress during the pandemic<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Group Therapy vs.\u00a0Parental Education\u00a0vs. Combined Approach\u00a0 <br \/><\/b>The\u00a0randomized trial\u00a0will evaluate three\u00a0approaches. One-third of\u00a0the participants\u00a0will\u00a0receive\u00a012 weeks of\u00a0group\u00a0telehealth therapy,\u00a0expanding on the work of the Connecting and Reflecting Experience (CARE), a group-based program\u00a0at Montefiore\u00a0and Einstein.\u00a0In these telehealth sessions, a group leader helps caregivers &#8220;mentalize&#8221; by encouraging them to recognize\u00a0and understand what motivates their children&#8217;s behavior, while examining their own thoughts and feelings. The CARE program is adapted from the work of <span class=\"xn-person\">Nancy Suchman<\/span>, Ph.D., the late mentor of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3307652-1&amp;h=4152690788&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Feinsteinmed.org%2Ffaculty%2F14026%2Famanda-zayde%2F&amp;a=Amanda+Zayde%2C+Psy.D.\" rel=\"nofollow\">Amanda Zayde, Psy.D.<\/a>, assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Einstein. Dr. Suchman was a researcher at the <span class=\"xn-org\">Yale School of Medicine<\/span> and a pioneer of this approach for fostering the connection between mothers and young children. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the group sessions, parents have the opportunity to connect with other caregivers and share common experiences, normalizing challenges,&#8221; said Dr. Zayde. &#8220;For example, they might wonder about and discuss why a child would spend hours online during the pandemic. Additionally, participants support each other and share community resources.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The CARE program was developed seven years ago for caregivers, often recent immigrants, who face health disparities and who are raising children with a range of mental health conditions. Pimentel<\/span>, Ph.D.<\/a>, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Einstein.
