Of those, just <i>under <\/i>half are in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3319485-1&amp;h=3590189807&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.debt.com%2Fmedical-debt%2Fcollections%2F&amp;a=collections\" rel=\"nofollow\">collections<\/a>. More Americans have medical debt, but as the pandemic winds down, more are keeping current with their bills<\/p>\n<p>That minor movement in the numbers can&#8217;t obscure a bigger problem,\u00a0says <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3319485-1&amp;h=995784841&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Fin%2Fdonsilvestri%2F&amp;a=Don+Silvestri\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"xn-person\">Don Silvestri<\/span><\/a>, President of Debt.com.\u00a0 &#8220;They say time heals all wounds, but it doesn&#8217;t heal medical debt,&#8221; Silvestri says. &#8220;Pandemic, recession, or a roaring economy, medical bills know no season.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, the most common amount of medical debt was between <span class=\"xn-money\">$1,000<\/span> and <span class=\"xn-money\">$5,000<\/span> with 32 percent owing in that range. In 2021, it rose to 34 percent.<\/p>\n<p>If there was any good news, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3319485-1&amp;h=2918044155&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.debt.com%2Fnews%2Fhow-to-pay-medical-bills%2F&amp;a=medical+debt\" rel=\"nofollow\">medical debt<\/a> of <span class=\"xn-money\">$150,000<\/span> or more dipped ever so slightly, from 1.5 percent last year to 1.2 percent this year.<\/p>\n<p>The most significant change \u2013 and one easily attributable to the pandemic \u2013 was the &#8220;primary source of your medical debt.&#8221; Last year, hospitalizations accounted for a quarter of medical debt. This year, that dropped to under a quarter at 18 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Other survey findings:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>35% of respondents tried to negotiate medical debt on their own, while 4% hired a medical bill advocate, and 60% did neither <\/li>\n<li>Of those who negotiated, 34% said they were successful, while 66% said they were not <\/li>\n<li>35% said they are on a payment plan to pay off the debt, while 65% said they are not<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;Long after this awful pandemic finally ends, medical debt will <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3319485-1&amp;h=1825342944&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.debt.com%2Fask-the-expert%2Fwhat-happens-when-you-cannot-pay-medical-bills%2F&amp;a=still+be+here\" rel=\"nofollow\">still be here<\/a>,&#8221; Silvestri says. &#8220;There&#8217;s no easy vaccine for medical debt.
