Blue Shield is a founding investor of CivicaScript, which is Civica&#8217;s operating unit dedicated to lowering the cost of select high-cost generic medicines at the pharmacy counter.<\/p>\n<p>The insulin initiative is supported by a wide range of health systems and health plans, including Blue Shield of <span class=\"xn-location\">California<\/span> and several other independent Blue Cross Blue Shield companies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The high cost of insulin poses a genuine hardship to Californians with diabetes, who already bear an outsized burden when it comes to the cost of their health care,&#8221; said <span class=\"xn-person\">Paul Markovich<\/span>, president and CEO of Blue Shield of <span class=\"xn-location\">California<\/span>. &#8220;This initiative will put affordable insulin within reach of every Californian who needs it and help reduce healthcare spending driven by runaway prescription drug prices.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The American Diabetes Association estimates there are <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3461411-1&amp;h=1300572052&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Fmain.diabetes.org%2Fdorg%2Fdocs%2Fstate-fact-sheets%2FADV_2020_State_Fact_sheets_CA.pdf&amp;a=more+than+3+million+adults\" rel=\"nofollow\">more than 3 million adults<\/a> in <span class=\"xn-location\">California<\/span> \u2013 more than 10% of the state&#8217;s adult population \u2013 who have been diagnosed with diabetes. About a third of people with diabetes need to take insulin to control the disease, according to the National Institutes for Health. Left untreated, the disease can lead to serious health problems as well as a huge economic burden on individuals, including dangerous and expensive complications.<\/p>\n<p>Diabetes also affects minority populations more seriously than others. This is particularly true for <span class=\"xn-location\">California&#8217;s<\/span> large Hispanic population, who have a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/c212.net\/c\/link\/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=3461411-1&amp;h=2798050199&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cdc.gov%2Fdiabetes%2Flibrary%2Ffeatures%2Fhispanic-diabetes.html&amp;a=greater+than+50%25+chance\" rel=\"nofollow\">greater than 50% chance<\/a> of developing diabetes as an adult, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
