MADRID, June 15, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Building on its experience of recent years, the Spanish drug treatment center TAVAD continues to obtain excellent results with its advanced benzodiazepine detoxification treatments. Nine out of ten patients treated for addiction to these tranquilizers and who completed their follow-up regime in 2015 have made excellent progress.

With more than 25 years dedicated to clinical research in the area of substance addiction, TAVAD has been able to obtain excellent results in the treatment of this addiction. More specifically, in 2015, nearly 94% of patients completed the programme having made positive progress after one year of treatment. The patient clinical profile is male, having an average age of 46 years, and single or divorced in 38% and 31% of cases, respectively.

One of the key factors in the effectiveness of the detoxification programme is the application of the most advanced pharmacology during the first 72 hours of treatment in order to regulate the neural changes resulting from prolonged consumption of tranquilizers. After hospitalisation, patients receive psychotherapeutic treatments for one year using modern techniques which are personalised with the aim of resolving conflicts which may exist in each patient’s social, workplace or family environments.

Recent scientific studies indicate new consequences of prolonged consumption of benzodiazepines, including possible links to neurodegenerative illnesses such as dementia.

“Around 700,000 women in Spain may experience problems related to the consumption of tranquilizers, a condition which can include, in a significant number of cases, prolonged and acute symptoms of abstinence,” revealed Dr. Legarda, General Director of TAVAD. “It is important to be aware of and properly informed as to its uses, limits in terms of frequency and duration of consumption, and the consequences of abuse,” he explained.

According to the latest Spain Household Survey on Alcohol and Drugs (EDADES) conducted by the National Drugs Plan (PNSD), women consume nearly twice as many tranquilizers as men. Data on the prevalence of this drug show that in Spain, 1 out of every 4 women ages 55 to 64 has taken tranquilizers within the past month.
