  • Detroit is one of three hosts chosen as part of the Sustainable Cities Challenge, and selected innovators will have access to a share of $3 million in funding in each city
  • The City of Detroit invites pioneering innovators from around the world to reduce fossil fuels and boost clean freight in the Eastern Market
  • Detroit’s Challenge on transforming freight has been designed by the City of Detroit alongside Toyota Mobility Foundation, Challenge Works and World Resources Institute

DETROIT, May 29, 2024 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The Toyota Mobility Foundation’s Sustainable Cities Challenge has selected the City of Detroit, Michigan, Varanasi, India, and Venice, Italy to host innovation challenges initiatives. The goal of the $9 million global initiative is to help cities accelerate toward sustainable mobility, fostering healthier and safer urban environments while enhancing people’s ability to commute, work, study, and access services.

Detroit Calls for Global Innovators to Promote Clean Freight in Historic Eastern Market as Part of Global $9M Sustainable Cities Challenge

Detroit has launched a global call for innovators to transform freight in the city’s historic Eastern Market district as part of the Toyota Mobility Foundation’s $9 million Sustainable Cities Challenge. Detroit’s initiative invites innovators from across the globe to access a share of $3 million in funding per city to create solutions that will reduce emissions, noise and air pollution and operational costs.

Over 150 cities from 46 countries entered the Challenge after the call to cities was first launched in June 2023 and over the last months, the list was narrowed to 10 and now 3 cities. The cities, located in the United States, India and Italy, were chosen from a shortlist of 10 cities announced in November 2023.

Detroit’s Eastern Market is the largest open-air market and amongst the oldest historic markets in the U.S. and is at the heart of Detroit’s Challenge. It is the city’s hub for food distribution, selling over $360 million of wholesale food annually, and double that in exports. The district is poised to expand and is considering strategies to address environmental concerns, carbon emissions, and pollution while adding residential units to this bustling community.

City planning efforts have called for exploring alternatives to fossil fuels and optimizing routing software to alleviate traffic congestion. Now, in a bid to reduce fossil fuel dependence and freight costs, Detroit invites innovators to apply for a share in $3 million of developmental funds. Innovators are tasked with crafting mobility solutions that seek not only to lower emissions and mitigate pollution but also to explore sustainable financial strategies that challenge the current economics of freight that make alternative fuel options too costly.

Detroit calls upon local and international innovators to propose bold solutions that remove barriers to adopting clean freight technologies, reduce fossil fuel use within the freight network and improve market vendor operations, where even slight cost reductions can have a profound impact.

Participants will gain exclusive insights into the complex workings of a large regional freight network as part of the City’s mobility systems, working with the City of Detroit to engage with city and business leaders in the Eastern Market.

Tim Slusser, Chief of the City of Detroit’s Office of Mobility Innovation, said:

“We’re excited and honored to be one of just three cities in the world selected for the Sustainable Cities Challenge. As the only city chosen in the western hemisphere, Detroit represents over one hundred years of world-renowned innovations in transportation. The Eastern Market district is a critical part of our region’s food distribution network. This Challenge is a great opportunity for the City to work closely with Eastern Market Partnership and the State of Michigan’s Office of Future Mobility and Electrification to pioneer new sustainable solutions in clean freight.”

The initiative, spearheaded by the Toyota Mobility Foundation and designed in collaboration with Challenge Works and the World Resources Institute, aims to bring cities and innovators together to develop sustainable, inclusive, data-driven mobility solutions fit for the future.

Ryan Klem, Director of Programs at the Toyota Mobility Foundation, said:

“This Challenge is an opportunity for innovators to work together with the City of Detroit to transform a critical part of the city’s infrastructure. Eastern Market is part of Detroit’s history, but it also plays a crucial role today and will do so for many years to come. The solutions to this Challenge will help businesses throughout Detroit, but the lessons learned could also be applied to cities across the world.”

Kathy Nothstine, Head of Future Cities at Challenge Works, said:

Detroit has already made efforts to make the city’s transportation network more efficient, but this Challenge will open the doors for innovators from across the world to provide fresh thinking and new approaches. We look forward to seeing the solutions proposed to Detroit’s City Challenge.”

Ben Welle, Director of Integrated Transport and Innovation at WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities, said:

“The city of Detroit has seen great changes since Eastern Market was first established over 150 years ago. Innovation is essential for cities to adapt to these changes and continue to thrive. This Challenge will bring the city and innovators together. This is an exciting opportunity not just for Detroit but for cities everywhere.”

The other selected cities for the Sustainable Cities Challenge are Varanasi, India and Venice, Italy.

Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India

Launching in late June 2024Varanasi is located on the banks of the Ganges River in northern India and is the “spiritual capital” of India. A revered pilgrimage destination, the city sees visitors from across India as well as abroad. This influx of visitors, while vital to strengthening the city’s tapestry of faith and culture, is leading to increased concerns about safety and crowding.

The Varanasi City Challenge aims to generate innovative, data-driven solutions incorporating elements of technology and design that make crowded areas of Varanasi’s old city (Kashi) safer and more accessible for religious tourists and local residents alike including vulnerable members of the population.

Venice, Veneto, Italy

Launching June 11, 2024 Venice is often pictured solely as a historic city famous for its intricate network of canals. Nevertheless, the majority of the population lives and works in the mainland suburbs such as Mestre, Maghera and other motorized islands, which serve as a crucial transportation hub connecting Venice to the mainland and beyond.

With a mobility landscape that is truly multi-modal, including land and water transport, the city has invested significantly in sustainable mobility infrastructure and services. In the Venice City Challenge, the city seeks innovative solutions that shift behavior, encouraging an increased use and adoption of existing sustainable transport modes.

The deadline for Sustainable Cities Challenge Detroit entries is Monday 5 September 2024. To find out more, visit the Sustainable Cities Challenge website.

U.S. Postal Service Releases Dog Bite National Rankings

Linthicum Heights, MD, letter carrier T.J. Jackson shows how mail carriers can use their satchel to protect themselves from aggressive dogs.

National Dog Bite Awareness Campaign Starts June 2

WASHINGTON, May 30, 2024 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Incidents involving dog attacks on Postal Service employees rose to more than 5,800 cases last year. As part of the USPS 2024 National Dog Bite Awareness Campaign, the organization is offering crucial information on how dog owners can be good stewards for safe mail delivery and ensure the safety of our employees.

Linthicum Heights, MD, letter carrier T.J. Jackson shows how mail carriers can use their satchel to protect themselves from aggressive dogs.

The campaign begins Sunday, June 2, and runs through Sunday, June 9. This year’s theme is “Don’t let your dog bite the hand that serves you.” Spread the news of the campaign with the hashtag #dogbiteawareness.

“Letter carriers are exposed to potential hazards every day, none more prevalent than a canine encounter. All it takes is one interaction for a letter carrier to possibly suffer an injury,” said Leeann Theriault, USPS Manager, Employee Safety and Health Awareness. “The U.S. Postal Service consistently encourages responsible pet ownership. The national dog bite campaign is an effort to promote dog bite awareness to keep our customers, their dogs, and letter carriers safe while delivering the mail.”

Dog Owners Can Help With Safe Mail Delivery

Letter carriers know all dogs can bite, even those perceived as nonaggressive. Dogs are generally protective of their turf and dog owners have an important responsibility to control them to ensure safe mail delivery.

Most people know the approximate time their letter carrier arrives every day. Securing your dog before the carrier approaches your property will minimize any potentially dangerous interactions.

When a letter carrier comes to your home, keep dogs:

  • Inside the house or behind a fence;
  • Away from the door or in another room; or
  • On a leash.

Pet owners also should remind children not to take mail directly from a letter carrier as the dog may view the carrier as a threat to the child.

Stay Informed, See the Mail Before It Arrives

By using Informed Delivery, a free USPS service, customers can digitally preview incoming mail and packages from a computer, tablet or mobile device. More than 52 million customers have enrolled since the service was launched in 2017. Sign up is at informeddelivery.usps.com. This service can help dog owners anticipate when their carrier will arrive.

Consequences of a Dog Attack

According to the most recent information available from the Insurance Information Institute, the average cost per insurance claim for a dog bite is $64,555. When a postal employee suffers an injury, the owner could be responsible for medical bills, lost wages, uniform replacement costs, and pain and suffering for the employee.

Staying Focused on Delivering

Letter carriers are trained to observe an area where they know dogs may be present. They are taught to be alert for potentially dangerous conditions and to respect a dog’s territory.

Letter carriers are trained to:

  • Make a non-threatening noise or rattle a fence to alert a dog if entering a yard;
  • Never startle a dog;
  • Keep their eyes on any dog;
  • Never assume a dog will not bite;
  • Never attempt to pet or feed a dog; and
  • Place their foot against an outward swinging door to prevent a dog from escaping.

If a dog attacks, carriers are also trained to stand their ground and protect their body by placing something between them and the dog — such as a mail satchel — and to use dog repellent, if necessary.

“Even though a customer’s dog is friendly to most people, it can always have a bad day,” said letter carrier Tara Snyder. “I know, from experience, even when a dog is in the house, customers need to make sure their door is secure so their dog can’t push it open and bite the letter carrier.”

Letter carriers have tools to alert them to dogs on their routes. A dog alert feature on carriers’ handheld scanners can remind them of a possible dog hazard, and dog warning cards must be used during mail sorting to alert carriers to addresses where a dog may interfere with delivery.

Holding the Mail

When a carrier feels unsafe, mail service can be stopped. Until the carrier feels safe enough to restart delivery, the mail will have to be picked up at the dog owner’s local Post Office. If a carrier feels a house or neighborhood is unsafe to deliver the mail and there is no way to inform residents their mail service has been suspended, the residents would have to contact the supervisor at their local Post Office for more information. The residents would also have to pick up their mail at the Post Office until it is safe to resume delivery. If a dangerous dog issue is not resolved, owners can be required to rent a Post Office box to receive mail.

A privately-owned and family-operated company since 1934, Meijer pioneered the “one-stop shopping” concept and has evolved through the years to include expanded fresh produce and meat departments, as well as pharmacies, comprehensive apparel departments, pet departments, garden centers, toys and electronics.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., May 30, 2024 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — In alignment with its continued efforts to create access to food, Meijer announced a $500,000 donation today to The Henry Ford’s public charter high school, Henry Ford Academy, to support its Farm to School initiative. The program provides free, accessible, locally sourced, and cooked-from-scratch school lunches for every high school student.

Meijer is a Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer that operates 241 supercenters throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin. A privately-owned and family-operated company since 1934, Meijer pioneered the “one-stop shopping” concept and has evolved through the years to include expanded fresh produce and meat departments, as well as pharmacies, comprehensive apparel departments, pet departments, garden centers, toys and electronics.

“At Meijer, we’re known for providing the freshest produce. In fact, we partner with several family farms spanning multiple generations – relationships my grandfather and father began nearly 90 years ago,” said Hank Meijer, Executive Chairman at Meijer. “As a family-owned company, with the purpose of enriching lives in the communities we serve, we support the incredible work The Henry Ford is doing for its Academy students and look forward to this program’s continued success.”

Celebrating its 27th year, Henry Ford Academy is a free, public charter, college preparatory high school uniquely located within the walls of the historic Detroit-based The Henry Ford. The Academy partners with a dozen local farms and organizations to offer its students in-season locally-grown food every day.

“In collaboration with thought leaders like Meijer, The Henry Ford is activating its mission to address the issues of climate change, nutrition and food accessibility,” said Patricia Mooradian, president and CEO of The Henry Ford. “We believe every student in America, starting with our own students at Henry Ford Academy, should have access to free, locally-sourced and cooked from scratch school lunches. Our institution is so fortunate to have Meijer as a longtime partner and as a generous supporter of this important effort.”

Bridging heritage with innovation, The Henry Ford continues to expand its education initiatives that focus on the importance of food, agriculture, and the environment. In September 2023, the organization announced a fundraising goal of $7 million to endow the school lunch program for its Academy.

From supporting neighborhood farmers to carrying locally made products on its shelves, Meijer is committed to not only giving customers the freshest products but also supporting local businesses and their continued growth. The retailer works with hundreds of local growers and is one of the largest purchasers of fruits and vegetables in its six-state footprint. Those relationships put nearly $100 million back into the local economy each year while guaranteeing a secure supply of locally grown products for customers.

“We recognize the value of partnering with local farmers and fostering sustainable relationships that benefit both our customers and our community,” said Melissa Conway, Director of Community Partnerships & Giving at Meijer. “As proud supporters of The Henry Ford, we are excited to be part of this important initiative, focused on the health and nutrition of their Academy students.”

“Providing ‘Mobility for All’ is our north star as we look to support and facilitate equitable EV charging opportunities for all customers,” said Christopher Yang, group vice president, Business Development, Toyota Motor North America. “We want to help ensure these underserved communities are not overlooked in the EV transition, and providing support for these charging facilities helps provide access to those who may not have easy access to home or public charging options.”

Toyota’s Clean Assist program, launched in 2021, matches residential customer charging with renewable electricity, thereby helping to reduce emissions generated from charging. In California this generates revenue from the Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS), based on battery electric vehicles (BEV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) charging at home. That revenue has been re-invested into transportation electrification in the state, including these chargers.

“Expanding access to public charging infrastructure is critical to our mission of accelerating the mass adoption of EVs,” said Dennis Kish, President of EVgo. “We are proud to partner with Toyota to build new fast charging resources that will support the equitable distribution of charging infrastructure in the Golden State.”

The cities receiving DC fast chargers were chosen using the CalEnviroScreen tool and based on certain criteria such as resident income levels, demographics, air quality levels, and areas that have or are expected to have meaningful EV penetration. Baldwin Park and Sacramento are both great examples of areas that are poised to see rapid EV growth in the future. These two environmental justice communities would benefit from the addition of more DC fast charging stations in strategic locations to serve the local population and support EV drivers.

For example, in Sacramento, the new 350kW DC fast chargers will be installed near the Arden Fair Mall, a known high-traffic area close to the freeway with multiple options for dining, shopping and other activities.

“As a member of the California Air Resources Board and the Sacramento Air Quality Management District, I am extremely excited that Toyota and EVgo have selected Arden Fair Mall as the site for a new 8-stall electric vehicle charging station,” Councilmember Eric Guerra said. “We’ll continue to look for ways to reduce carbon emissions and I’m proud of the work our region is doing to meet our air quality goals.”

The Baldwin Park charging station will also be centrally located less than a mile off Interstate 10, with access to amenities including a grocery store on site and many nearby restaurants.

“Investing in public charging not only supports EV drivers, it also benefits everyone in our community by encouraging zero emissions travel in an area that has experienced historically poor air quality,” said Senator Susan Rubio. “This new fast charging station in Baldwin Park will bring economic and public health benefits that our residents and visitors alike can enjoy.”

Toyota will look to continue supporting local communities through its Empact Vision, helping enable the transition to electrification for all, working to ensure that no one is left behind in the fight against carbon emissions. The 2025 Kia EV9 is the first electric vehicle assembled in the state of Georgia and joins the award-winning Telluride, Sorento, and Sportage SUVs currently assembled at Kia’s West Point facility

WEST POINT, Ga., May 30, 2024 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/– Thursday marked a historic milestone at Kia Georgia’s assembly plant in West Point as team members gathered to celebrate the start of assembly of the all-electric 2025 EV9 three-row SUV, the first saleable electric vehicle assembled in the state of Georgia. The vehicle was introduced by SeungKyu (Sean) Yoon, President and CEO for Kia North America and Kia America, then driven off the assembly line by Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp and James Watson, Kia Georgia’s Vice President of Production.

On Thursday, Kia Georgia, Inc. held a Start of Production ceremony for the all-electric 2025 Kia EV9 SUV. Kemp, Georgia Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones, Senator Jon Ossoff, Commissioner Pat Wilson (Georgia Department of Economic Development), Congressman Drew Ferguson, and Stuart Countess (President and CEO of Kia Georgia).

“Marty and I were privileged to be part of this monumental accomplishment by the Kia Georgia team,” said Governor Kemp. “This expansion of Kia’s operations in our state and the addition of this incredible new product line to the vehicles already being built in West Point is just the latest example of what comes from state and local partners working with this valued job creator. I want to congratulate the Kia Georgia team members on today’s achievement and thank them for choosing the Peach State yet again as we work to become the e-mobility capital of the nation.”

The EV9 joins the award-winning and increasingly popular lineup of SUVs currently being assembled on Kia Georgia’s assembly line: Telluride, Sorento and Sportage. This is the culmination of a more than $200 million expansion that has added approximately 200 new jobs at the plant and the flexibility to assemble both EVs and the company’s traditional products along the same assembly line.

“Today’s launch of the Kia EV9 in Georgia is the latest example of Kia’s commitment to the U.S. market and the state of Georgia,” said Yoon. “Through Plan S, Kia is poised to be a leader in the e-mobility sector for years to come. Having achieved prestigious accolades such as World Car of the Year, World EV of the Year, and North American Utility Vehicle of the Year, EV9 will be in excellent hands with the team members at Kia Georgia and their track record for assembling award-winning, world-renowned products speaks for itself.”

Stuart Countess, President and CEO of Kia Georgia, looked back to almost 15 years ago when the first Kia vehicle rolled off the same assembly line on Nov. 16, 2009, while crediting the Kia Georgia team with being the driving force behind the milestones that have led to celebrations like the one on Thursday.

“Today, the Kia Georgia team is still going as strong as ever, continuing that mindset of turning challenges into opportunities,” said Countess. “We are excited for this chance to add Kia’s flagship EV to our facility and to enter this new era at Kia Georgia with the same quality focus of assembling the best vehicles in the world, right here in West Point.”

Gary Nader Art Centre Presents the “Wifredo Lam Masterpieces” Exhibition: A Journey Through His Oeuvre

0

MIAMI, May 30, 2024 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/– From May 22 to October 31, the Gary Nader Art Centre proudly presents the “Wifredo Lam Masterpieces” exhibition, featuring 18 seminal works by the renowned Cuban artist, Wifredo Lam. Curated by Gary Nader, an authority on Lam’s oeuvre, this retrospective spans four decades of the artist’s career, offering an unparalleled insight into his artistic evolution.

In 1993, Nader presented “Wifredo Lam: A Tribute,” followed by “Wifredo Lam Homage 100 Birthday” in 2002. Notably, “Wifredo Lam—One Man Show” was reintroduced in 2016 in collaboration with Phillips. In 2021, the renowned gallerist curated “Wifredo Lam: The Imagination at Work” in association with Pace Gallery, showcasing paintings, works on paper, and rare bronze sculptures, providing a profound exploration of Lam’s career and legacy.

“For over 40 years, our dedication has been to promote Lam’s work globally, and this exhibition celebrates his profound impact on modern art,” says Gary Nader.

The exhibition traces significant periods in Lam’s career:

1940s: The Emergence of Lam’s Unique Style

Returning to Cuba in 1941 after years in Europe, Lam began blending Cubism and Surrealism with Afro-Caribbean symbolism. His early works, such as “Hermès Trismégiste” and “The Flying Bird” from 1945, mix human and animal figures, reflecting his deep engagement with Afro-Cuban mythology. “Jungle Gods” (1948) showcases his use of a vibrant symbolic language that taps into African, Caribbean, and Latin American folklore.

1950s: Maturity and Thematic Exploration

During this decade, Lam’s works like “Ídoli” (1955) and “Here on Earth” (1955) reflect his mature style, continuing to explore the spiritual connections between humans and nature with a distinctive dreamlike and symbolic imagery.

1960s and 1970s: Innovation and International Expansion

Lam’s later works, including “Nous te voyons” (1964) and “Horizon Chauds” (1968), exhibit a shift towards abstraction while maintaining his rich symbolic narrative. His final works from the 1970s blend introspection with ongoing exploration, cementing his legacy as a master of cultural and artistic fusion.

This exhibition not only highlights Lam’s significant contributions to the art world but also provides a window into the cultural and personal contexts that influenced his work.

More Debt, More Stress: Credit Card Stress Hits Highest Level in Three Years Adding to Mental Health Challenges

Debt.com’s third annual mental health and money survey shows Americans are more stressed than ever.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., May 29, 2024 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Over the past three years, a growing number of Americans are feeling stress after using their credit cards – it’s driving them deeper into debt and affecting their mental health.

Debt.com is the consumer website where people can find help with credit card debt, student loan debt, tax debt, credit repair, bankruptcy, and more. Debt.com works with vetted and certified providers that give the best advice and solutions for consumers ‘when life happens.’

To support Mental Health Awareness Month, Debt.com surveys Americans on mental health and money each May. The results show where there’s more debt, there’s more stress.

“It’s the dictionary definition of a vicious cycle,” says Debt.com chairman and CPA Howard Dvorkin. “You fall behind on your bills, so you distract yourself with dinner out or some shopping therapy. Of course, that adds to your debt, which adds to your stress, which depletes your mental health. And our research shows it’s getting worse every year.”

In 2022, 1 in 5 survey respondents reported feeling stressed after using their credit cards. The 2024 survey reveals there has been a 17% increase over the past three years, raising that number to 4 in 10. Gen Z is most likely (47%) to feel stressed after using credit cards.

Nearly half (47%) say they take on more debt when they are feeling stressed. Debt.com’s research shows a breakdown of those taking on more debt when they are feeling stressed:

  • 67% of Gen X take on more debt when stressed
  • 40% of Millennials take on more debt when stressed
  • 37% of Gen Z take on more debt when stressed

Over half (51%) feel stressed when reviewing their credit card bills, while:

  • 10% feel hopeless
  • 8% feel sad
  • 4% experience a loss of sleep
  • 3% experience a loss of appetite
  • 3% experience lower self-esteem

The research also shows that 26% say they argue with their significant other over credit card spending:

  • 45% are Gen X
  • 16% are Millennials
  • 16% are Gen Z
  • 7% are Baby Boomers

The convenience of credit cards can negatively impact mental health, according to 76% of survey respondents. More than 1 in 4 have accrued at least $10,000 in credit card debt because they were feeling down or stressed out.

Further, the research shows that the Middle Atlantic region of the country is feeling the most (31%) stress and mental strain from credit card debt.

“The generational and regional data remind us of something important,” Dvorkin says. “Debt isn’t equally distributed in this country – but the stress is. So, it doesn’t matter if you’re a 25-year-old struggling with student loans or a 50-year-old who’s fallen behind on their credit cards. Those individuals might have nothing else in common – except for how terrible they’re feeling about their finances.”

Deadline Extended by 90 Days in Payment Card Settlement Claims Process

Businesses now have more time to participate in the massive $5.5B settlement but must submit claims by new August 30, 2024 deadline. For further information and updates on the Payment Card Settlement, including a timeline, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), and related documents, please visit www.PaymentCardSettlement.com.

Businesses now have more time to participate in massive $5.5B settlement but must submit claims by new August 30, 2024 deadline

BROOKLYN, N.Y., May 28, 2024 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ – In a move that helps ensure more businesses can submit a claim and participate in the unprecedented class action lawsuit “In re Payment Card Interchange Fee and Merchant Discount Antitrust Litigation,” the Court has extended the claim submission date by 90 days.

The new, extended deadline to file a claim is Friday, August 30, 2024. Claims can be submitted in as little as five minutes on the claims portal at PaymentCardSettlement.com, or by mail. The massive $5.5 billion settlement is the nation’s largest antitrust class-action settlement in history.

This extension helps all eligible businesses, and in particular small businesses, which often have limited resources, by giving them more time to take action.

Only businesses that submit a claim by the extended deadline will get money from the settlement. The settlement comes after a 19-year court battle centered on business owners paying allegedly inflated Visa and Mastercard interchange fees.

Who qualifies?
Claim submission criteria is simple: Businesses and other merchants that accepted Visa and/or Mastercard credit or debit cards in the U.S. between January 1, 2004 and January 25, 2019 may be eligible. Even shuttered or bankrupt businesses, or those that changed owners can submit a claim by the extended deadline.

Submit online with a QR code:
More than 18 million businesses received claim forms by mail. Business owners can simply scan the QR code on the claim form and are then taken to a personalized, secure page in the claims portal pre-filled with business credentials.

Submit online with a Tax Identification Number (TIN):
Business owners without a claim form can go to the claims portal, use a TIN to confirm their identity, then follow a few easy steps to submit. Be prepared with documentation confirming authorization to file a claim on behalf of the business, such as a W-9 form.

Submit by mail:
Claims can also be submitted by mail. Visit PaymentCardSettlement.com for instructions.

How much can my business get?
There is no set amount – payments will be calculated after all claims are filed and validated and will depend on the value of all eligible payment card transactions and the number of claims received, among other factors, and they could range from tens of dollars to hundreds of thousands.

Comments from Co-lead Counsel:
“We’re happy to share this good news with Visa and Mastercard merchants who haven’t yet claimed their share of the landmark Payment Card Interchange Fee Settlement,” commented Alexandra “Xan” Bernay, Co-Lead Counsel on the case, and partner at Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd LLP. “Businesses now have until August 30, 2024 to participate in this extraordinary settlement that goes back 20 years. The extension ensures that eligible merchants have more time to take action and claim their share.”

LOUD AND LIVE STUDIOS AND CELIA CRUZ ENTERTAINMENT RELEASE COMMEMORATIVE ALBUM WITH NEWLY FOUND RECORDINGS OF CELIA CRUZ

Loud And Live Studios and Celia Cruz Entertainment

“Celia Cruz En Vivo: 100 Años de Azúcar” Celebrates the Centennial of the Legendary Artist

MIAMI, May 24, 2024 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Loud And Live Studios and Celia Cruz Entertainment announced today the release of a new Commemorative LP in celebration of the centennial of Celia Cruz’s birth. It is a compilation of nine songs recorded at a concert in Miami, FL, by the Queen of Salsa during the years of 1986 and 1987 titled En Vivo: 100 Años de Azúcar (100 Years of Azúcar). These recordings have remained unreleased for almost four decades.

Loud And Live Studios and Celia Cruz Entertainment

“Looking for material in our archives, we found these recordings that we didn’t even know existed, made by radio personality Albertico Rodríguez in a nightclub in Miami in the mid-eighties. Celia only released one live album during her entire career, which makes these recordings even more valuable,” says Omer Pardillo-Cid, Celia Cruz’s last manager and universal executor of her legacy, in addition to being one of the album producers. “One of the great treasures of my life was accompanying Celia for so many years. After her death, I made it my mission to safeguard the work that she left us so that it would not be forgotten over time. This project is one more example that Celia is immortal. Now she is the one who accompanies me and will do so for eternity.”

The power of the music of the so-called La Guarachera de Cuba is inestimable. More than twenty years after her death, the iconic Cuban artist seems to be more alive than ever. In the two decades that have passed, the fame and affection for the artist continues to grow daily. Celia Cruz has become the most idolized Hispanic singer in history. This cultural icon, who received countless honors and awards during her lifetime, including three GRAMMY® Awards and four Latin GRAMMY® Awards, was commemorated by the United States Postal Service with a postage stamp featuring her image as part of the Latin Music Legends Forever series. Recently, her image was immortalized by the toy company Mattel® as a Barbie® doll in their Inspiring Women series, and in August 2024, the United States Mint, a bureau of the Department of the Treasury, will honor the artist as one of four women selected to have their faces depicted on a United States 25-cent coin, as part of the American Women Quarters program.

This album, which features some of her most iconic songs such as Quimbara, Bemba Colorá, La Dicha Mía and Tu Voz, in completely unreleased versions, is produced by Loud And Live Studios and curated by multi-GRAMMY® and Latin GRAMMY® award-winning producers Nelson Albareda and Omer Pardillo-Cid, and radio personality Albertico Rodríguez. The recordings were restored and remastered by engineer Pedro “Waldy D” Domínguez, also a GRAMMY® award winner.

This album will be available in several configurations, including a Limited-Edition Collector’s box set. The Limited-Edition set will feature unique packaging, one of its main attractions, adorned with authentic vintage sequined fabric from one of the textiles used in Cruz’s famous costumes. The Limited-Edition Collector’s set and the Deluxe box set edition will also include a hardcover book containing one hundred photographs celebrating each year of the legendary artist’s life, along with exclusive printed photos that are sure to become collector’s items. Additionally, the album will be released as standard vinyl and made available on all digital platforms.

“This album is very special to me for several reasons. First and foremost, Celia Cruz, Cuba’s most iconic artist was one of the first artists I worked with. Second, these are recordings of live concerts in the city I cherish, Miami. Third, I have always liked design, whether graphic or advertising, and I think the packaging of this album is unique and a true representation of Celia’s style,” says Nelson Albareda, CEO of Loud And Live and executive producer of the album. “And finally, the music itself, my great passion. As a Cuban-American, this music celebrates my roots, my heritage, and my essence as a human being. An artist like Celia comes along every hundred years, and that is precisely what we are celebrating, 100 Años de Azucar.”

“En Vivo: 100 Años de Azúcar,” distributed by InnerCat, had its exclusive premiere on SiriusXM Caliente channel 158 and is now available on all digital platforms and in physical formats at www.celiacruz.com. The launch of this album marks the beginning of a series of celebrations organized by the Celia Cruz Foundation to honor the centennial of the iconic artist. These festivities will commence in October 2024 and continue through the end of 2025.

NEW MAZDA SPONSORED SURVEY FINDS NEARLY HALF OF CAR-SHARING AMERICAN COUPLES HAVE MONTHLY VEHICLE DISAGREEMENTS

Mazda North American Operations is headquartered in Irvine, Calif., and oversees the sales, marketing, parts and customer service support of Mazda vehicles in the United States and Mexico through nearly 700 dealers. Operations in Mexico are managed by Mazda Motor de Mexico in Mexico City. For more information on Mazda vehicles, including photography and B-roll, please visit the online Mazda media center at www.mazdausamedia.com.

Key Survey Data Points

  • One-in-four Americans consider themselves and their partner car-incompatible

  • 50% said they frequently have to readjust their car’s seat positions, mirrors, seatbacks and stereo volume

  • Mazda partnered with expert LMFT, Elizabeth Earnshaw, to share advice on how to address car-incompatibility conflict resolution and how features in the all-new 2025 CX-70 can help ease these disagreements

IRVINE, Calif., May 21, 2024 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) is revealing what could be driving arguments with couples when it comes to their vehicles. While infidelity and financials are frequently cited causes for riffs in relationships, a new culprit is creating turmoil in garages across the country: sharing a vehicle. A recent survey of 2,000 married or cohabiting couples, fielded online by Talker Research on behalf of Mazda, found surprising facts about what couples argue about when it comes to sharing a vehicle.

The survey found that nearly half (45%) of married or cohabiting couples admit they argue over a shared vehicle monthly. Some of the items that participants cited as topics that they often argued about when it comes to sharing a vehicle are the need to frequently have to readjust seat positions (62%), mirrors (55%), seatbacks (51%) and stereo volume (50%) after their partner uses the vehicle. With this in mind, the 2025 CX-70, Mazda’s all-new two-row mid-size crossover SUV, was thoughtfully designed to bring harmony to the driving experience and to relationships across the country, through new technologies such as its available Driver Personalization System.

The Driver Personalization System uses the vehicle’s internal camera to scan facial features and converts them into numeric information creating a driver profile. The system then uses the driver profile to automatically restore over 250 personalized driver settings to their desired positions such as seat position, mirror position, driving display and stereo settings. This means that the next time the driver gets ready to hit the road after their spouse last drove the vehicle, all of their preferred settings will be adjusted with no extra effort on their part. The driver profile is secured locally on the vehicle only and is not subject to remote access. Saved driver profiles can be deleted at any time.

The Driver Personalization System within the CX-70 can help you focus on the things more important in life. In fact, 21% of those surveyed would reward their spouse for properly readjusting vehicle settings by taking them out on a romantic dinner date.

To address car-incompatibility issues, one in four Americans with long-term partners would completely clean the car once a week to avoid arguments about their shared vehicle.

In order to provide additional help for partners to feel less car-incompatible, Mazda is partnering with Elizabeth Earnshaw, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, founder of A Better Life Therapy, author of “I Want This To Work” and the upcoming “Till Stress Do Us Part” and influencer. Earnshaw, LMFT has developed tips for couples to address car-incompatibility while highlighting how features of the Mazda CX-70 can help mitigate these arguments.

“Many times in my sessions, I see arguments around vehicles causing deeper problems with couples in their marriages,” said Earnshaw. “Clear communication and understanding of your partner’s wants and needs is important to a healthy relationship and the Driver Personalization System within the Mazda CX-70 can help alleviate relationship pain points.”

Elizabeth Earnshaw, LMFT tips for dealing with car-incompatibility:

  • Understand your mental load: Couples should take time to sit down with their partner to make a list of all of the things that have to be remembered in a day in order to manage their relationship, home and car. Explore who tends to be responsible for the bulk of it. Discuss together whether this feels fair or if things need to be redistributed and work to redistribute as necessary.
  • Manage your stress: Too much stress makes it difficult to relate to others, even the people we love the most. To manage stress, partners should prevent the small stressors as much as they can, learn to self soothe by doing things like deep breathing and muscle relaxation and work together to solve big problems. When dealing with stress around a vehicle, make sure to take the time for deep breathing before addressing the issue.
  • Interdependent Relationship: Even though partners share their car, they still want to be able to be themselves. Interdependent Relationships are the gold star and means that as a couple, partners can integrate who they are as a unit and who they are as unique individuals. Couples who have the ability to make space for time together and time apart tend to be the happiest. Work together to understand each other’s needs for personal time and regularly schedule time to spend together and apart for relationship balance.
  • Practice Active Listening: Couples get stuck arguing about their differences in preference, especially with their vehicles, when they focus on who is right and who is wrong when they should be practicing active listening. Partners can practice active listening by putting their own agenda to the side so you can truly hear and understand their partners viewpoint. If they catch themselves starting to drift towards other thoughts, bring their attention back to what their partner is saying. After they’ve finished talking, summarize what they shared and then they should ask if they’ve missed anything before providing solutions or sharing their own point of view.

With its inspiring, yet sophisticated design with thoughtful cargo solutions paired with the latest technology and conveniences, couples can expect that the Mazda CX-70 will deliver peace and help you focus less on the little things, like adjusting settings, and more on the important points of life with your partner.

Montefiore Holds Series of Bronx Events in Recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month

BRONX, N.Y., May 23, 2024 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — No longer a “silent struggle,” hundreds of Bronx residents and families impacted by a wide range of conditions that affect, mood, thinking and behaviors, participated in Montefiore Health System events held throughout the last two months in recognition of May being Mental Health Awareness Month. Event topics were requested by community members and led by Montefiore’s department of Psychiatry and its Office of Community & Population Health (OCPH).

Montefiore

“These events were incredibly emotional and inspirational as each one was informed by individual neighborhoods expressing what was most important to them – ranging from mindfulness to distress to victimization and violence,” said Liz Spurrell-Huss, MPH, MSW director, Health Equity Programs, OCPH. “Each event was different, but every time we were moved by how open and engaged everyone was about topics that are often highly stigmatized and hard to discuss.”

The events were held in partnership with local community-based organizations, including:

  • Breaking Ground – Park House, La Central, Boston Road
  • Jewish Association Serving the Aging (JASA)
  • Pastoral Migratoria Saint Antony Of Padua Church
  • Presbyterian Senior Services (PSS) Life University
  • Regional Aid for Interim Needs (RAIN): Middletown Center, Gun Hill Senior Center, Tolentine Senior Center and Parkchester Senior Center
  • Riverdale Senior Services: Schervier Apartments, Marble Hill Senior Center
  • St. Luke Episcopal Church

“Hearing each person’s stories, struggles and triumphs out in the community is an honor – and it is an essential step in bringing people who need mental health support into treatment,” said Dr. Ana Ozdoba, director, Psychiatry Residency Training, Montefiore Health System and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. “It was also an invaluable experience for our psychiatry residents, who are newer to the field, as it reinforces why we are here in the Bronx and the importance of community partnerships in addressing today’s mental health crisis.”

To close Mental Health Awareness Month, the Montefiore Child Outpatient Psychiatry Division led by Dr. Jenny Seham, partnered with HearYourSong, a nonprofit that empowers children and teens with serious illnesses and complex health needs to make their voices heard through songwriting, will present a concert featuring original songs about topics ranging from friendship to struggling with depression.

Seham, who serves as Director, Arts and Integrative Medicine and Montefiore Einstein’s Youth Empowerment Series (YES), expressed, “Children in our community are feeling unprecedented levels of sadness and hopelessness; students of color are at elevated risk for increased stress, anxiety and depression. YES highlights the strength, resilience, and creativity of local youth through arts performances and exhibits. Their songs have a powerful impact on themselves and the audience; the concert is a true community healing experience.”

Montefiore is a designated Behavioral Center of Excellence by the New York State Office of Mental Health and earlier this year, announced plans create a new pediatric inpatient psychiatry unit in the Bronx.

This Hurricane Season Take Steps to Protect Your Family from CO Poisoning and Other Post-Storm Dangers

0

WASHINGTON, May 23, 2024 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — June 1 marks the start of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, and it could be an extremely active one, according to some forecasts of 2024 hurricane activity. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is warning consumers about the increased risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, fires and electric shock after hurricanes and severe storms hit.

Experience the full interactive Multichannel News Release here: https://www.multivu.com/players/English/9268151-us-consumer-product-safety-commission-cpsc-carbon-monoxide-poisoning/

“Hurricanes and major storms in the U.S. cause widespread damage that impacts millions of Americans each year,” said CPSC Chair Alex Hoehn-Saric. “This hurricane season, I urge consumers to follow CPSC’s safety tips to prepare ahead of storms and prevent loss of life in a storm’s aftermath.”

Consumers need to be especially careful when storms knock out electrical power. CO poisoning from portable generators can kill whole families in minutes. CO is called the invisible killer because it is colorless and odorless. CO poisoning from portable generators can happen so quickly that people can become unconscious before recognizing the symptoms of nausea, dizziness or weakness.

On average, more than 200 consumers die in the U.S. each year from CO poisoning related to consumer products, according to CPSC’s latest report on Non-Fire Carbon Monoxide Deaths Associated with the Use of Consumer Products. About 92 of those deaths are linked to portable generators.

CPSC data show African Americans are at higher risk of death

Another CPSC report shows that from 2012 through 2022, where race was known, non-Hispanic Black or African Americans accounted for 23 percent of generator-related CO deaths, which is much higher than their share in the U.S. population.

Consumers should follow these safety tips to protect their families during hurricane season. The Atlantic hurricane season typically lasts from the beginning of June to the end of November.

Loss of Power—Using a Generator Safely

  • NEVER operate a portable generator inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace or shed. Opening doors or windows does not provide enough ventilation to prevent the buildup of lethal levels of CO.
  • Operate portable generators outside only, at least 20 feet away from the house, and direct the generator’s exhaust away from the home and any other buildings that someone could enter. Close windows and seal off all other openings, such as soffit vents, dryer vents, and exhaust fan vents, that are near the generator or in the path of its exhaust. Do not operate a generator on an outside porch or in a carport. They are too close to the home.
  • Follow portable generator instructions about electrical shock hazards in inclement weather, which may include use of an NFPA-rated non-combustible generator tent or may state to wait until rain passes.
  • Check that portable generators have been maintained properly, and read and follow the labels, instructions, and warnings on the generator and in the owner’s manual.
  • Look for portable generators that have a CO shut-off safety feature, which is designed to shut the generator off automatically when high levels of CO are present around the generator. These models may be advertised as certified to the latest safety standards for portable generators–PGMA G300-2018 or G300-2023 and UL 2201–which are estimated to significantly reduce deaths from CO poisoning. UL 2201 certified models have reduced CO emissions in addition to the CO shut-off safety feature and are estimated to nearly eliminate the risk of death from CO poisoning.

Check CO and Smoke Alarms

  • Working smoke and CO alarms save lives! Install battery-operated smoke and CO alarms or smoke and CO alarms with battery backup on each level and outside separate sleeping areas at home. Interconnected combination smoke and CO alarms are best; when one sounds, they all sound.
  • Make sure smoke alarms are installed on every level and inside each bedroom.
  • Make sure CO alarms are installed on every level and outside each bedroom.
  • Test smoke and CO alarms monthly to make sure they are working properly and replace batteries, if needed. Never ignore an alarm when it sounds. Get outside immediately. Then call 911.

Dangers with Charcoal and Candles

  • Never use charcoal indoors. Burning charcoal in an enclosed space can produce lethal levels of carbon monoxide. Do not cook on a charcoal grill in a garage, even with the garage door open.
  • Use caution when burning candles. Use flashlights or battery-operated candles instead. If using candles, do not burn them on or near anything that can catch fire. Never leave burning candles unattended. Extinguish candles when leaving the room and before sleeping.

Dangers with Wet Appliances:

  • Look for signs that your appliances have gotten wet. To reduce the risk of shock or electrocution, do not touch wet appliances that are still plugged into an electrical source.
  • Before using your appliances, have a professional or your gas or electric company evaluate them for safety. Replace all gas control valves, electrical wiring, circuit breakers and fuses that have been under water.

Dangers with Gas Leaks:

  • If you smell or hear gas leaking, leave your home immediately and contact local gas authorities from outside the home. Do not operate any electronics, such as lights or phones, before leaving.
