“Words are a powerful thing and can be a barrier to women’s advancement. It’s time for action this International Women’s Day,” says Lorraine Hariton, President and CEO of Catalyst

NEW YORK, March 8, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Catalyst, the leading global nonprofit focused on creating workplaces that work for women, is marking International Women’s Day (IWD) by launching a bold campaign to tackle one of the biggest gender equality issues in the workplace: unconscious gender bias. The new campaign, which features women from diverse industries, aims to shine a light on the power of words used to describe women and encourage people to #BiasCorrect by paying more attention to theirs.

“Women and men with the same talents and skills are often described in very different ways due to unconscious gender bias, creating invisible barriers that can have an enormous impact on women’s advancement,” said Lorraine Hariton, President and CEO of Catalyst. “The good news is Catalyst’s resources provide ways people can overcome their own unconscious biases. The #BiasCorrect campaign is designed to spark conversations around the power of words, and more importantly, to inspire learning and action.”

Catalyst partnered with NYC-based brand transformation company Burns Group to bring its leading research to life with a creative idea to drive both action and awareness. The multifaceted campaign developed by Burns Group incorporates chat platforms, social media, digital assets, and outdoor placements.

Joanne McKinney, CEO of Burns Group, said, “We jumped at the chance to partner with Catalyst and apply creativity to the issue of unconscious gender bias. Our team was determined to create an idea that did more than just build awareness of the issue. The marriage of technology and humanity in this campaign is what makes it truly powerful.”

On this important day of the year for women’s advancement, Catalyst invites individuals and companies to check out its IWD #BiasCorrect webpage, which provides unique resources to help individuals understand unconscious bias, interrupt it, and correct it. The site includes videos, customizable social media posts for download, and information on how individuals and companies can combat unconscious bias, such as the soon-to-be released Catalyst Inclusion Accelerator, a leading-edge diagnostic tool designed to evaluate and monitor how employees are experiencing inclusion.

#BiasCorrect Plug-in

Among the tools offered in the campaign is the first-ever #BiasCorrect Plug-in to tag unconscious bias in real-time conversations on work-based chat platforms such as Slack. The plug-in identifies words that create harmful gender stereotypes and suggests alternative language. For instance, if a woman is described as “aggressive,” the app suggests correcting the sentiment to “assertive.” Eskalera, the company that developed the technology for the plug- in, is making the software available via open source code in an effort to spread the message and encourage change across every chat platform.

“When the Catalyst team approached Eskalera to support this initiative we could not have been more thrilled,” said Tom Chavez, CEO of Eskalera. “This development amplifies Catalyst’s important gender equity research by providing a tool that detects potentially gender-biased statements as they occur and suggests alternatives to unintentionally hurtful or demeaning language.”

“To reduce the gender gap in leadership, we must break down the invisible barriers that keep women from advancing,” added Ms. Hariton. “Inclusive leaders and managers must learn to interrupt bias to reap the benefits of a diverse workforce, including improved business performance, increased employee engagement, and greater innovation to remain competitive in the future. Let’s act now to create workplaces that work for women.”

“With our partners in the ‘80% in Every Community’ campaign, the Alliance’s Nuestras Voces Network is committed to ensuring all get the best scientific and medical information and access to preventive services, including screening for colorectal cancer.”

“If you have questions or don’t have a health provider, we are here to help. Call the Alliance’s Su Familia Helpline at 1-866-783-2645 for information and referral to services, including colorectal cancer screening services, in your community,” concluded Dr. Delgado.

OAKLAND, Calif., March 7, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — In April 2019, the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) will present a major exhibition combining art and history to tell the untold and under-recognized stories of California’s LGBTQ+ communities. Going beyond mainstream narratives, Queer California: Untold Stories will be the first museum exhibition of its kind to deepen and expand our understanding of this history through a multifaceted and interactive experience, providing the opportunity for museum visitors and members of the LGBTQ+ community to add their voices and stories to the conversation.

“At this very tumultuous time in our country, many marginalized communities feel that threats to their basic rights are on the rise. This exhibition is needed now more than ever not only to share messages of hope and change, but also provide a deeper understanding of the complex history and important lesser-known stories of LGBTQ+ communities in California,” said Christina Linden, Exhibition Curator. “Queer California will address issues close to the hearts of many visitors who identify as queer, as well as other visitors who have felt like outsiders in mainstream culture.”

With transgender and LGBTQ+ rights increasingly in the news, the exhibition will be a timely opportunity to shine light on the history of California as a major site of LGBTQ+ community, culture, and politics. Queer California will explore a range of powerful stories through examples of social activism, contemporary artwork, historical materials, rarely-seen artifacts, archival documents, photographs, films and videos, costumes, and ephemera such as zines, stickers, and flyers.

The exhibition aligns important milestones in LGBTQ+ culture with untold stories, focusing on the diversity of queer identities, civil rights, and resistance to oppression. A timeline will help ground visitors in the key moments, movements, and figures in California’s LGBTQ+ history, as well as the organizations, events, and people not often mentioned in that history. This exhibition will draw on histories of struggle for self-determination to help us imagine a more inclusive future.

Queer California: Untold Stories will be on view in OMCA’s Great Hall April 13 through August 11, 2019. Historian and activist Susan Stryker and film historian Greg Youmans are consultants on the exhibition.
