Adds Sophia, “I’ve learned lots of social and business skills… you teach customers something about cookies they might not have known and you show them that you are motivated to reach your goal.” “I use the five skills a lot – especially Goal Setting. Every year, I set a higher personal goal for myself,” says Laila.

“Participating in the Girl Scout Cookie Program has long-lasting benefits,” underscores Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles Chief Executive Officer Theresa Edy Kiene. “This year especially, I know our cookiepreneurs are excited to be practicing their skills and thrilled to be back to more in-person connections with their customers.”

Girl Scouts’ newly updated Financial Literacy badges offer entrepreneurial playbooks for every age level. Maggie’s Pearl Initiates Phase III Clinical Trial for Treatment of Patients with PMM2-CDG

Phase III epalrestat clinical trial to evaluate safety, tolerability, and clinical and metabolic improvement of pediatric subjects with PMM2-CDG

STURGIS, Mich., Jan. 9, 2023 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Maggie’s Pearl, a joint venture between Perlara, Maggie’s Cure, and the Mayo Clinic, has started a Phase III clinical treatment trial to evaluate safety, tolerability, and clinical and metabolic improvement of pediatric subjects with PMM2-CDG (formerly known as Congenital Disorder of Glycosylation Type 1a) on oral epalrestat therapy versus a placebo. Administered by the Mayo Clinic, the clinical trial is a prospective, single-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Maggie’s Pearl received Food and Drug Administration approval in December 2021 to begin the Phase III clinical trial in 40 patients with PMM2-CDG. Now, the study is actively recruiting, and the first two study subjects were dosed in December 2022.

PMM2-CDG, or phosphomannomutase-2-congenital disorder of glycosylation — is caused by mutations in a gene that supplies the instructions for making the PMM2 enzyme, which is involved in a process known as glycosylation. In that process, sugar chains are created, altered, and chemically attached to specific proteins to form glycoproteins. Those proteins are key to normal growth and function of tissues and organs.

“This trial is the culmination of five years of research attempting to identify a new treatment option for pediatric PMM2-CDG,” said Ethan Perlstein, CEO of Maggie’s Pearl. “The start of this trial is an inflection point in our research. If this study demonstrates epalrestat to be safe and effective, families could finally have a viable treatment option for children living with PMM2-CDG.”

The primary study objective is to evaluate the safety and probable benefit of oral epalrestat therapy in pediatric subjects with PMM2-CDG. Study outcomes include evaluating the metabolic improvement of pediatric subjects treated with oral epalrestat therapy compared to those receiving the placebo. Additional areas of evaluation are safety, clinical improvement, and pharmacokinetics (PK) of oral epalrestat therapy, as well as urine polyols, adverse events, laboratory data, and other measures.

To learn more about the trial, visit: clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT04925960.

About Maggie’s Pearl
Established in August 2020, Maggie’s Pearl LLC is a joint venture between Perlara, Maggie’s Cure, and the Mayo Clinic to identify potential drug therapies to treat and improve the lives of PMM2-CDG patients. Maggie’s Pearl was inspired by Maggie Carmichael, a nine-year-old girl from Sturgis, Michigan, who was diagnosed with PMM2-CDG at eight months of age. At the time of her diagnosis, Maggie’s parents were told there was no treatment for their daughter’s rare, and potentially fatal, genetic disease. There are roughly 1,000 people in the world known to have PMM2-CDG. To learn more about Maggie’s Pearl, visit: www.maggiespearl.co.

Two Toyota Leaders Recognized by MotorTrend as ‘Software-Defined Vehicle’ Innovators

  • Executives Steve Basra and Dave Tsai earn recognition for helping move Toyota forward as company continues mobility transformation
  • First-annual MotorTrend Software-Defined Vehicle Innovator Awards recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the automotive industry through software

LAS VEGAS and PLANO, Texas, Jan. 9, 2023 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — With the seismic shift moving the automotive industry to become more connected, automated and electric than ever before, software is taking a leading role in redefining how customers interact with their vehicles. Toyota today announced that MotorTrend has named two executive leaders within Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) Connected Technologies and Toyota Connected North America (TCNA) as part of its first class of software-defined vehicle innovators.

Two Toyota executives took home honors in MotorTrend's first Software-Defined Vehicle Innovator awards. Pictured are Toyota Connected Vice President of Engineering Dave Tsai (L) and TC CEO and President Steve Basra (R), who is also dual-capped with leadership positions within Toyota Motor North America's Connected Technologies division.

Steve Basra, group vice president of Connected Technologies at TMNA; president and chief executive officer at TCNA; and board member for Toyota Connected India, Toyota Connected Europe and TCNA, has been with Toyota organizations in the U.S. and Europe since 1998 and earned a spot on MotorTrend’s list of software-defined vehicle leaders. Basra’s dual-capped role within TMNA and TCNA, brings together software designers, engineers and developers to help redefine experiences Toyota and Lexus drivers enjoy in their vehicles and through mobile applications.

Basra’s leadership has been crucial toward technology advancements made in occupant safety and natural speech assistant technologies.

Alongside him, TCNA’s Vice President of Engineering Dave Tsai was named as a Domain Expert, helping develop TCNA’s culture by merging Toyota quality with Silicon Valley-style software development best practices. Additionally, Tsai has worked with TCNA’s People Operations team to create career paths for engineers to have engaging paths where they can continue to grow professionally and develop technologies that have the potential to reach millions of customers around the world.

Tsai helped bring safety and telematics systems in-house under Toyota engineers, contributing toward saving hundreds of millions of dollars and increasing up time.

Basra and Tsai were among the earliest members of TCNA in 2016 after Toyota Motor Company President Akio Toyoda announced the formation of Toyota Connected mobility and data services companies. Among their first projects at the time was to build a concept of what their ideal in-vehicle experience would be, taking a Lexus NX and completely reimagining its interior.

“Then, we brought many of the ideas we learned in that concept to life with our latest Toyota Audio Multimedia and Lexus Interface infotainment systems found in many 2022 and 2023 vehicles,” said Basra. “The teams we built created our first infotainment and voice-command technologies designed specifically for North American audiences. We’re thankful for those who believed in our vision and the many Connected Technologies and Toyota Connected team members who tirelessly worked to bring customers a truly first-class experience from behind the wheel.”

Working within TCNA, they established the Drivelink telematics services provider (TSP), which powers Toyota and Lexus Safety Connect telematics services. Since it launched in 2019, the TSP has been activated in more than 6 million vehicles in North America, answering more than 3 million customer calls including more than 14,000 vehicle accidents – many of which connected drivers and passengers with first responders.

By bringing their TSP in-house, engineers were able to more readily help customers, roll-out software updates more efficiently and decrease operating costs so that the savings could be instead invested in innovation projects. Drivelink’s underlying code is now being shared by Toyota Connected companies in India, Australia and elsewhere.

Complementing Drivelink, the new-generation Toyota Audio Multimedia and Lexus Interface are notable for being the first of the brands’ infotainment systems to have over-the-air updates as well as cloud-connectivity that has brought them a number of enhancements. The systems also integrate a Voice Assistant, which uses “Hey Toyota/Hey Lexus” wake words and can control climate, audio, navigation and even windshield wipers in select vehicles.

“Toyota vehicles are known for being there when our customers need us,” said Tsai. “It is our job to uphold that reputation with the digital services we’re creating as well. However we engage customers – whether in the vehicle, through a phone app or even in the metaverse, we want customers to enjoy the peace of mind that comes with a Toyota experience.”

Teams are already beginning development of future infotainment systems that will further TMNA Connected Technologies and TCNA’s role in the software-defined vehicle. Many of the new features and functionality being rolled out come as a direct result of how customers use their vehicles – and how Toyota companies envision the quickly approaching world of shared mobility. Toyota has kept a keen eye toward developing core strengths with technology and working with partners where it makes sense.

“No matter what, Toyota and Lexus customers are always at the forefront of everything we do,” said Basra. “Technology will progress. Cars will change. But the trust customers have in our vehicles will always drive every decision we make.”

MotorTrend introduced its first class of Software-Defined Vehicle Innovators during the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. More information about the awards can be found here:  https://www.motortrend.com/news/winners-motortrend-software-defined-vehicle-innovator-sdvi-awards/.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif., Jan. 9, 2023 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Alcohol Justice & Youth For Justice are pleased to announce receiving a million dollar grant to support after-school programs and substance use prevention education for Latinx youth and families in the Canal District of San Rafael, California.

Alcohol Justice logo

The program is supported by Elevate Youth California, which is managed by The Center at Sierra Health Foundation under contract with the State of California’s Department of Health Care Services through Proposition 64, California Cannabis Tax Fund, Allocation 3, Youth Education Prevention Early Intervention and Treatment Account.

“We are so grateful to receive these funds that will allow us to expand our community organizing efforts to help even more Canal residents prevent substance use disorder,” stated Maite Durán, Director of Programs for Youth For Justice.

“The Canal” is a historically under-resourced and segregated community – the poorest neighborhood – in the richest county of California. Its 18,000 overwhelmingly Spanish-speaking residents are primarily low-income, 87% Hispanic, and 60% are immigrant. 22% of Canal youth live below the poverty line.

The million dollar grant, spread out over three years, will allow for expansion of the Youth For Justice program which is guided by their “Four-Pillar Philosophy” of Health and Healing, Nature Connection, Culture and History of Latino/Indigenous Peoples, and Community Organizing to Prevent Alcohol and Other Drug Harm.

“An exciting major goal of our program is to train youth leaders to help create local policy that will reduce the impact of seductive marketing on youth alcohol consumption,” said Durán. “This goal allows project participants to be involved in advocacy, community organizing, and substance use prevention education to make a positive change in their community.”

The Youth For Justice program is also proudly supported by the San Rafael Alcohol and Drug Coalition, the Juvenile Probation Department of Marin County, the Marin Prevention Program, and Alcohol Justice.

“This award is well-deserved acknowledgement of ten dedicated years of hard work that Maite Durán and her team have devoted to building the Youth For Justice program,” stated Cruz Avila, Executive Director at Alcohol Justice. “It is also very encouraging to know that the value it is delivering to Canal residents will continue to grow and make this community healthier and safer. We are honored and blessed to be supported by Elevate Youth California.”

Emissions Data Now Available Online for The Covanta Hillsborough Waste-to-Energy Facility

0

TAMPA, Fla., Jan. 6, 2023 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Covanta, a leader in sustainable materials management and a premier provider of environmental solutions benefitting businesses and communities, announced that emissions data is now available to the public online for the Covanta Hillsborough Waste-to-Energy Facility in Tampa, FL, which every year processes 523,000 tons of waste that would have otherwise gone to methane-producing landfills.

With this information now ready on the facility’s website, the Hillsborough County community is given an unfettered virtual seat into the control room to view the very same data that operators use to monitor operational performance at the Waste-to-Energy facility, which serves county residents with reliable and sustainable waste management.

Waste-to-Energy facilities convert the waste that remains after recycling into electricity for homes and businesses. This technology diverts waste from landfills, a major source of methane, a greenhouse gas 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

“By making this data readily available, we hope to provide the communities of Hillsborough County a feeling of confidence and pride knowing that the waste being processed at the Waste-to-Energy facility is being done so both sustainably and safely,” said Tequila Smith of Covanta, which operates the county-owned facility. “Furthermore, we hope the public comes to appreciate the positive contributions of Waste-to-Energy technology in terms of mitigating global warming, increasing recycling and moving us toward our climate goals.”

Continuous emissions monitoring is an important tool in determining a Waste-to-Energy facility’s compliance with the strict emission limits set forth in its operating permit, which is established in accordance with the federal Clean Air Act and Florida’s strict regulatory requirements. The Hillsborough facility has been consistently recognized for exceptional operations, including OSHA’s stringent Voluntary Protection Program Star certification, and operates below the established permit’s emission limits.

“The Covanta Hillsborough facility provides a vital service to our community and to our environment. Each year waste from county households and businesses is converted into enough continuous electricity to power 23,000 homes for one year. At the same time, we are reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 462,000 tons – the equivalent of taking 90,000 passenger vehicles off the road,” said Tequila Smith of Covanta. “The release of continuous data from Covanta demonstrates transparency and accountability for this sustainable solution.”

With 8 Covanta facilities across the state, Florida relies on Waste-to-Energy more than any other state in the nation for the safe and environmentally responsible disposal of municipal solid waste. Combined, the facilities reduce climate-damaging greenhouse gas emissions by more than 4.5 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalents. The facilities also recycle 172,000 tons of metal a year, enough to build 130,000 cars.

About Covanta

Covanta is a leader in sustainable materials management providing environmental solutions to businesses and communities. Through its network of facilities and state-of-the-art services, Covanta is a single-source partner in solving today’s most complex environmental challenges. For more information, visit covanta.com.

U.S. Postal Service Celebrates the School Bus

New Stamp Symbolizes the Journey of Education

HIGH POINT, N.C., Jan. 5, 2023 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Whether it inspires excitement, tears, fears or nostalgia, the bright yellow bus that transports millions of students to classrooms across the United States every day is a cherished artifact of a common childhood experience. With the release of the School Bus additional ounce stamp, the U.S. Postal Service celebrates the iconic yellow school bus and its place in the nation’s collective childhood.

About 25 million children across the United States ride a yellow bus to school every day. In addition to providing safe and reliable transportation — almost 70 times safer than being driven to school in a car—these buses also keep millions of cars off the road, saving gasoline and lowering carbon dioxide emissions. Inside each bus is a rolling microcosm: a youthful world where childish joys and dramas play out, friendships form and dissolve, and daydreams are dreamed as children are ferried to and from school.

The stamp’s background is ecru, while the school, flag, and lettering are tan. The school building’s few details — windows, door, clock face, and “SCHOOL” lettering — are also ecru. The body of the bus is bright yellow, its tire rims are gray, and its tires, door, windows, bumpers, trim, and details are black. In addition, black lettering on its side states “LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICT.” The bus stands on a thick black line that serves both as a road and a border separating it from the words “ADDITIONAL OUNCE” along the stamp’s bottom edge.

Artist Steve Wolf worked with art director Greg Breeding and designer Mike Ryan to create this stamp.

School Bus additional ounce stamps are issued in panes of 20 and coils of 100. Additional ounce stamps are used to add postage when needed on heavier mailpieces. Like a Forever® stamp, this stamp will always be valid for the rate printed on it.

Background

The brilliant color of school buses is no accident. In 1939, a group of state transportation officials and bus and paint manufacturers gathered at Columbia University’s Teachers College, in New York City, to develop safety and fabrication standards for school buses. The group tested various colors and determined that black lettering showed most legibly on the vibrant “National School Bus Chrome,” which became the vehicle’s standard color. Thirty-five states immediately began mandating that color, but it was not until 1974 that all states adopted the shade.
