MCKINNEY, Texas, March 15, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The garden at Community Garden Kitchen (CGK) is taking root. To further CGK’s mission, Globe Life, located in McKinney, Texas, has donated $50,000 to sponsor the Globe Life Garden, a raised-bed garden located on roughly .25 acres of land at 501 Howard Street in McKinney. CGK will be the first kitchen in Collin County to allow those in need to dine with dignity. CGK will prepare and offer freshly cooked meals to anyone in need, no paperwork required, no questions asked. The kitchen, approximately 4,400 square feet, is expected to open this spring.

Globe Life (PRNewsfoto/Globe Life)

As Community Garden Kitchen, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, nears the finish line with construction of a new kitchen, this important piece of the nonprofit is beginning to grow. In addition to the garden serving as a source of food in the kitchen to feed people in need, the Globe Life Garden will also be used to teach gardening skills to anyone interested in learning how to grow food, even on a small plot of land.

“At Globe Life, our mission is to Make Tomorrow Better. Our partnership with Community Garden Kitchen allows us to grow stronger together as a community by providing for a daily need and giving our employees the opportunity to actively volunteer,” said Jennifer Haworth, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Globe Life.

The Episcopal Diocese of Dallas, the property owner, is leasing the land to CGK for $10 a year. Volunteers have already cleared debris, trimmed trees, and planted seeds. A design is in the works along with grass removal and installation of a watering system. While McKinney Roots, another local nonprofit, has donated many needed materials, the garden will have additional costs for design, development, and continued growth. Donations to Community Garden Kitchen will help purchase materials for 16 raised beds, fertile soil, various vegetable and fruit seeds, irrigation equipment and needed gardening supplies.

“We are very excited and grateful to see all the volunteers who are working to create a beautiful and bountiful garden that will benefit so many in our community,” said Angela Poen. “We hope others will want to help us grow too!” Volunteers can find opportunities on CGK’s website at www.communitygardenkitchen.org.

NEW YORK, March 15, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The Vilcek Foundation has produced a new video and published an article highlighting the life and work of cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto. Born in Mexico, Prieto became one of the most coveted cinematographers in Hollywood following his work on Alejandro González Iñárritu’s 2000 film Amores Perros. Late last year, Prieto was announced as the recipient of the 2021 Vilcek Prize in Filmmaking.

A photograph of Rodrigo Prieto. Photo courtesy of The Vilcek Foundation.

In the video and article, Prieto speaks about his early experiments in filmmaking on Super 8, and his love for the art and craft of cinematography. “You can’t sometimes describe why a certain texture, a certain color, a certain framing ‘feels’ a certain way, but it does,” he says. “Cinematography is an abstract art form in the sense that an audience doesn’t realize how they’re being manipulated—by the lighting, by the camerawork, by the lens choice—to evoke emotional states.”

Prieto is known for his meticulous setups, unconventional camerawork, and ability to create moving, visceral cinematic experiences. His frequent collaborators include Martin Scorsese, Ang Lee, Oliver Stone, Alejandro González Iñárritu, and Julie Taymor. Nominated for three Academy Awards—for his work on Lee’s Brokeback Mountain (2006) and Scorsese’s Silence (2017) and The Irishman (2019)—Prieto has also been recognized by the Independent Spirit Awards, BAFTA, and the American Society of Cinematographers.

The son of an artist and an aeronautical engineer, Prieto balances technology and artistry to create the visual qualities he desires to accomplish a given effect or atmosphere—from using infrared film to dramatic effect in Oliver Stone’s Alexander to the meticulous referencing of film stock color profiles he undertook to achieve period looks over five decades in The Irishman. “That combination of my mother’s visual artistry and my father’s technical ability is something that I have in my DNA,” he says, “utilizing technology and different techniques to create art.”

“I want to participate in movies that say something to me from an emotional level,” says Prieto. “I gravitate to scripts and ideas that have something that I want to explore in myself.”

The Vilcek Prize in Filmmaking is awarded as part of the Vilcek Foundation Prizes in the arts and humanities. Awarded in a different category each year, the prizes recognize and celebrate the contributions of immigrant vanguards and innovators in each category.

“As leaders in the arts, we have a responsibility to promote diversity by making space, providing access, and amplifying the artistic contributions of marginalized groups and individuals,” says Vilcek Foundation President Rick Kinsel. “The Vilcek Prizes in the arts and humanities enable us to speak to the value of immigration for our society in a non-politicized way.”

The Vilcek Foundation

The Vilcek Foundation raises awareness of immigrant contributions in the United States and fosters appreciation of the arts and sciences. The foundation was established in 2000 by Jan and Marica Vilcek, immigrants from the former Czechoslovakia. The mission of the foundation—to honor immigrant contributions to the United States, and more broadly to foster appreciation of the arts and sciences—was inspired by the couple’s respective careers in biomedical science and art history. Since 2000, the foundation has awarded over $5.8 million in prizes to foreign-born individuals and supported organizations with over $5.2 million in grants.

The Vilcek Foundation is a private operating foundation, a federally tax-exempt nonprofit organization under IRS Section 501(c)(3).

National Pork Board launches Menú Urbano FRESH to recreate Hispanics’ favorite street-food recipes with a nutritional twist

National Pork Board

DES MOINES, Iowa, March 15, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The National Pork Board has teamed up with Mexican TV personality Karla Martínez to launch Menú Urbano FRESH, a campaign to help Latinos discover ways to recreate and enjoy authentic street-food dishes in a nutritious way without sacrificing what consumers love most about pork: its flavor.

National Pork Board

“I’m thrilled and honored to be part of this effort, not only to keep Hispanic traditions alive through cooking but also to show consumers how pork is good for them and their families,” said Martínez, a co-host in the popular morning show Despierta America on Univision. “Food is one of the primary ways Latinos celebrate and share our culture with family and friends. Every day, we are becoming more conscious of the dishes we cook and serve at our family’s tables.”

The campaign is a continuation of the original Menú Urbano campaign that launched in late 2020 to find the best street food pork dishes in select cities in the U.S. Menú Urbano FRESH will re-imagine those same dishes but with a nutritious twist.

“With pork, consumers don’t have to give up flavor to eat a nutritious meal, and that’s exactly what this campaign is all about,” said Jose de Jesus, senior director of multicultural marketing at the National Pork Board. “Our goal is to ensure Latinos are confident that with pork, the possibilities are endless, and you can enjoy a nutritious, flavorful and authentic meal.”

Menú Urbano FRESH is launching just in time to celebrate National Nutrition Month. Along with Martínez, the National Pork Board is also collaborating with three influential Latina content creators. They will provide tips and swaps for recreating popular street-food dishes into mouth-watering, nutritious dishes made with fresh pork cuts and ingredients that are ideal for families to prepare and enjoy at home.

Menú Urbano FRESH partners include:

  • Chef Mia Castro, a Puerto Rican chef and former participant at Food Network’s hit show Chopped, and Fox TV’s Hell’s Kitchen based in New York
  • Natalia Saenz, a Colombian health and wellness and lifestyle content creator based in Miami, FL
  • Pamela Berrondo, a Mexican, certified Holistic Nutritionist based in San Francisco, CA

According to NPB proprietary research, 79% of Hispanics cook meals to retain a connection to their native culture and 62% say they prefer food that reminds them of their family’s tradition. In addition, 62% of Latinos agree that “healthy means fresh to me.” Although there are different versions of a typical meal within each culture, one thing that remains constant in Hispanic cuisine is pork.

“Pork has been a staple in Hispanic kitchens throughout generations. And today, pork is 16% leaner and 27% lower in saturated fat compared to about 20 years ago, thanks to the pork industry’s response to consumers’ desire for lean pork products,” de Jesus said.

A study conducted by the National Pork Board revealed that pork is a nutrient-rich and high-quality protein that is packed with flavor, making it the ideal protein for any meal. Additionally, pork is a very accessible protein that lends itself to a variety of cooking methods using traditional Hispanic ingredients found all over Hispanic markets across the country, including fresh vegetables and fresh fruit-based sauces, spices such as habanero, ají amarillo, and chipotle, as well as sauces such as Mojo Criollo and Guava.

Traditional recipes from Latin American street-food cuisine that have been revamped with a nutritional twist for this campaign include Tacos de Lechuga con Cerdo y Salsa de Mango, Tostadas de Cerdo al Chipotle and Cachapa de Cerdo Adobada en Cítricos, y Salsa Guasacaca.

NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital Center for Community Health

BROOKLYN, New York, March 15, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Today, NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital celebrated the opening of the Center for Community Health. The Center for Community Health is a world-class ambulatory care center where leading specialists, working collaboratively under one roof, combine innovative clinical approaches and cutting-edge technology to provide exceptional, comprehensive care to the Brooklyn community.

NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital Center for Community Health

The six-story, 400,000-square-foot facility, located at the NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital campus on 6th Street between 7th Avenue and 8th Avenue in Park Slope, is the first major ambulatory care facility built in Brooklyn in 40 years and the largest. The Center for Community Health elevates the patient experience to new heights, serving as a one-stop destination for patients to receive individualized, coordinated care from diagnosis to treatment.

The Center for Community Health offers a wide range of ambulatory care services, including oncology, digestive, and endoscopy services, as well as an infusion center, ambulatory surgery, diagnostic imaging center, and more. Multidisciplinary teams of physicians from Weill Cornell Medicine work together to consider each patient holistically, whether they are being treated for digestive diseases, cardiovascular issues, cancer, or other conditions, or coming for outpatient surgery, interventional radiology, or diagnostic imaging.

“NewYork-Presbyterian is dedicated to making world-class care more accessible, convenient and equitable in all the communities we serve, and the opening of the Center for Community Health is a reflection of that commitment,” said Dr. Steven J. Corwin, president and CEO of NewYork-Presbyterian. “The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for high-quality care close to home, and we are so pleased to expand access to our care and open this incredible resource for Brooklyn, helping residents spend less time in the hospital and more time living their lives.”

“NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital is committed to improving the health and well-being of the Brooklyn community, and the new Center for Community Health will provide seamless access to high-quality, innovative care, all in one convenient location,” said Robert Guimento, president of NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. “Focusing first and foremost on patients’ needs and the delivery of outstanding care, this new building is designed for healing and represents the future of ambulatory care.”

“The Center for Community Health epitomizes Weill Cornell Medicine’s enduring dedication to providing exemplary and compassionate care to our patients,” said Dr. Augustine M.K. Choi, the Stephen and Suzanne Weiss Dean of Weill Cornell Medicine. “The center offers patients a convenient single destination for all of their medical needs, a beacon for maintaining good health and well-being. We are proud to work with our esteemed partner NewYork-Presbyterian to continue our vital work ensuring the best medical care is accessible throughout the city, as we strive for health equity in all communities.”

The Center for Community Health is designed to make patient visits as convenient and pleasant as possible. The building is awash in natural light with views of tree-lined Brooklyn streets and the Manhattan skyline, helping to create a healing, soothing environment. Stunning pieces of artwork from a diverse group of artists, including local Brooklyn artists, are displayed throughout the building. The building’s layout encourages social distancing and COVID-19 safety measures are in place, including temperature and symptom screening upon entering, hand sanitizing stations throughout the building, appropriate personal protective equipment for all health care providers and patients, frequent disinfection of high touch surfaces, and more.

Access service representatives welcome patients in the lobby to orient them and help them navigate the building. Kiosks are located in the lobby to make registration quick and easy, and patients also have the option to complete their paperwork remotely and securely before their visit, on their mobile phone or online, reducing wait times. Upon arrival, patients are offered a personalized “smartband” that provides access to the building. Each surgical patient’s visit has a clear, planned flow that begins and ends in the same space for patients having a procedure – a private prep and recovery room that serves as “home base” for them and their companions throughout their visit. For ambulatory surgery, patients will be assigned a nurse who will care for them throughout their visit.

Technologies are central to delivering exceptional, cutting-edge care. A prime example is the Center for Community Health’s imaging center, one of the most advanced in New York City. With an MRI system, a fully digital PET/CT system, two 4D Ultrasound machines and more, specialists can produce the highest quality images and immediately incorporate the findings into a patient’s electronic medical record. The MRI system is also equipped with lighting and sound features to soothe anxiety.

Clinical features of the building include:

  • 12 state-of-the-art operating rooms for ambulatory surgery, six procedure rooms for outpatient endoscopy and special procedures
  • Diagnostic imaging services
  • Pre-anesthesia evaluation center
  • Prep and recovery for ambulatory surgery
  • Ambulatory infusion center with dedicated pharmacy and lab
  • Clinical trials office
  • Multi-specialty medical and surgical practices

The facility also has a valet-staffed parking facility, grab-and-go café, comfortable waiting lounges, a conference center accessible from the lobby, and staff dedicated to helping patients and visitors navigate the building.

Texas home sales, median price break records while housing inventory hits all-time low

AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 25, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/– For the sixth consecutive year, the Texas housing market broke records in terms of the number of homes sold and median price, while inventory levels hit a critical all-time low, according to the 2020 Texas Real Estate Year in Review report released today by Texas Realtors.

Texas Association of Realtors logo.

Texas real estate sales broke records despite being in the middle of a pandemic,” said Marvin Jolly, 2021 chairman of Texas Realtors. “Housing inventory dropped to historically low levels in many areas of the state, and that shortage of homes for sale made many markets extremely favorable to sellers and challenging for buyers.”

Home sales across the state increased 9.5% in 2020, with 393,615 homes sold. This is a larger increase than the 3.8% increase in 2019.

Housing inventory dropped to 1.7 months of inventory, a decrease of 1.3 months from 2019. According to the Texas Real Estate Research Center, a market balanced between supply and demand has between 6.0 and 6.5 months of inventory.

Median home price increased 8% from the prior year to $259,230. Price class distribution showed that the largest percentage of homes sold across the state (34.5%) fell in the $200,000$299,000 price range.

“The 2021 housing market will be characterized by strong demand with low inventories accompanied by strong price growth,” explained Luis Torres, Ph.D., research economist with the Texas Real Estate Research Center at Texas A&M University. “Inventories of homes priced under $300,000 will be especially low, affecting sales in that price range. The economic recovery helped by the additional federal fiscal stimulus and vaccination rates will contribute to Texas housing demand in 2021.”

Active listings statewide declined 22.1% from 2019 to 2020. Homes spent an average of 55 days on the market, four days less than 2019.

Chairman Jolly concluded, “Rising home prices coupled with the housing shortage has made affordability a challenge across our state. These issues remain top of mind for Texas Realtors as we continue through the 87th legislative session. We will continue to champion legislation that will ensure homeownership remains attainable and a sound investment for years to come.”

Luis Carlos González Rodríguez’s New Book El Inmigrante, A Heart-Wrenching Tale Of A Man’s Journey Through Toil And Faith In His Motherland Cuba

0
Luis-Carlos-Gonzalez-Rodriguez

HIALEAH, Fla., March 12, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The book El Inmigrante was created by Luis Carlos González Rodríguez. Luis is an author who hails from Venezuela and was born on October 7, 1989, in the city of La Guaira in the Vargas State.

Rodríguez said this about his book: “El Inmigrante is a moving, realistic and deeply critical novel away, at least as much as possible, from subjectivity and prejudices, to narrate events experienced in communism in Cuba. But beyond the political and social sphere, this novel tells how God’s plan for the life of David, its protagonist, is developing despite disappointment, humiliation, and confinement. This is not a theological novel either; but it is a proof, by way of a story, of the divine plan for each person who entrusts their way to Christ.

The story arises from a spark, a daring to escape from Cuba’s political system, which results in two failed and frustrated attempts to leave the Island, resulting in imprisonment, humiliation, and hopelessness. However, despite the pain, God is opening paths that require obedience, forgiveness, and patience to finally achieve the desired freedom in the United States and fulfill that divine and perfect plan previously drawn up by God.

Despite the political rhetoric and its contradictions, and the constant pressures of the social environment, David remained clinging to his desire to flee and rebuild his life, away from communism. Despite the blows and humiliations that he experienced since childhood as if they were marking for this book, there were two fundamental pillars that could never be taken from him and led him to achieve freedom and his faith late but decisive in Christ and his dignity.”
