‘Tis the Season to Be Safe: Top Tips for Your Family During COVID-19

0

WASHINGTON, Nov. 20, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The holidays normally are a time to get together in person with friends and family.  However, the pandemic may mean virtual celebrations this year.  Regardless of how you celebrate, it’s important to protect yourself from possible dangers associated with holiday trees, candles, and cooking fires, as well as unsafe toys.

Experience the interactive Multichannel News Release here: https://www.multivu.com/players/English/8803851-cpsc-covid-19-holiday-safety-tips/

To keep the season safe, here’s what you need to know:

TOYS

Data:

  • Choking on small parts and riding toy injuries:  CPSC reports that in 2019, there were an estimated 162,700 toy-related, emergency department-treated injuries and 14 deaths to children younger than 15, with most of the deaths associated with choking on small parts, like small balls and small toy parts and riding toys.
  • Toy recalls: continue to decline, with nine toy recalls in fiscal year 2020, three involving a lead violation, compared to 172 recalls in 2008, with 19 involving lead violations.  Toys were also recalled for defects, such as choking, entrapment, ingestion and laceration hazards.  Recalled toys present choking, entrapment, ingestion and laceration hazards, among other hazards that pose the threat of death or injury to a child.
  • Scooters: The number of injuries associated with non-motorized scooters significantly decreased from 2015 to 2019 for children younger than 15, from about 45,500 to about 35,600 injuries.

Tips:

  • Follow age guidance and other safety information on the toy packaging, and choose toys that match your child’s interests and abilities.
  • Get safety gear, including helmets for scooters and other riding toys–helmets should be worn properly at all times and be sized to fit.
  • Keep small balls and toys with small parts away from children younger than age 3, and keep deflated balloons away from children younger than 8 years old (discard broken balloons at once).

COOKING

Data:

  • Cooking fires are the # 1 cause of residential fires.
  • An average of 1,700 cooking fires occur on Thanksgiving Day each year, more than three times the average number on any other day of the year.
  • In the last two decades, there were 220 fire or scald/burn incidents involving turkey fryers, resulting in 81 injuries and $9.7 million in property loss.

Tips:

  • Never leave cooking food unattended on the stove.
  • Keep children away from the cooking area, and keep flammable items, like potholders and paper or plastic bags, away from the stove and oven.
  • Only fry a turkey outside and away from your home–not inside your garage, or on your porch.  Do not overfill the oil in the turkey fryer and follow the manufacturer’s instructions on use, including thawing your turkey thoroughly and maintaining control of the oil temperature.

DECORATING

Data:

  • On average, there are about 200 decorating-related injuries each day during the holiday season, with about half of the incidents involving falls.  And in the 2018 holiday season, about 17,500 people were treated in emergency rooms due to holiday decorating-related injuries.
  • In the 2019 holiday season, there were six deaths associated with holiday season decorations.
  • From 2015 to 2017, on average, there were about 100 Christmas tree fires and about 1,100 candle fires (in November and December), resulting in 20 deaths, 160 injuries and nearly $50 million in property damage each year.

Tips:

  • Make sure your live Christmas tree has plenty of water, and look for the “Fire Resistant” label when buying an artificial tree.
  • Place burning candles in sight, away from flammable items, and blow them out before leaving the room.
  • Only use lights tested for safety by a national recognized testing laboratory.  Throw out sets with broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections.

To view and share a Holiday Safety video, b-roll of a dry Christmas tree, turkey fryer and candle burn and a poster, and for more information on how to be safe during the holidays, please visit CPSC’s Holiday Safety Information Center.

If You Purchased Gasoline from a Valero Station in the State of California and Paid with a Debit Card, a Class Action Settlement May Affect Your Rights

0

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 20, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — A proposed class action settlement has been reached with Valero Marketing and Supply Company (“Valero”) in a case claiming that Valero engaged in deceptive and unfair conduct in violation of California law by failing to ensure that customers are notified that debit card purchases of gasoline are charged a higher “credit” price, rather than an available lower “cash” price.  The lawsuit is known as Bautista v. Valero Marketing and Supply Company, Case No. 3:15-cv-05557-RS.  Valero denies these allegations and there has been no finding of liability against Valero.  Valero has agreed to the Settlement to avoid the uncertainties and expenses associated with continuing the case.

WHO IS IN THE SETTLEMENT CLASS?

You need to decide whether you are affected by this Settlement. The Court-certified Settlement Class is defined as “All persons who, between December 3, 2011 and the date of preliminary approval, purchased gasoline using a debit card at a Valero-branded station in California that advertised a ‘cash’ price and ‘credit’ price on Relevant Valero-Branded Signage but the Relevant Valero-Branded Signage did not affirmatively disclose how gasoline purchased with a debit card was priced, and were charged more money per gallon than the advertised ‘cash’ price.”

WHAT DOES THE SETTLEMENT PROVIDE?

Valero has agreed to implement certain modifications to signage available for use by Valero-branded stations in California and its signage policies to further inform consumers how their debit cards will be charged at Valero-branded stations.  For details on the modifications Valero has agreed to, visit www.GasolineSignageSettlement.com or call 1-888-905-0604.

YOUR RIGHTS AND OPTIONS

Do Nothing:  By doing nothing, you are staying in the Settlement Class, and you will automatically receive the benefits of the Settlement in the form of signage and policy modifications.  But you will lose the ability to file or continue your own lawsuit for monetary damages or other relief against Valero based on the claims that are a part of this Settlement.

Ask To Be Excluded:  If you exclude yourself from the Settlement Class you still receive the benefit of the Settlement in the form of signage and policy modifications.  However, you may then be able to sue, or continue to sue, Valero regarding the advertising of “cash” and “credit” prices and failure to disclose a “debit” price, to the extent such claims are not time-barred.  To ask to be excluded, you must send an “Exclusion Request” by mail stating that you want to be excluded.  You must mail your Exclusion Request postmarked by February 18, 2021.  For more information on how to exclude yourself visit www.GasolineSignageSettlement.com.

Object to the Settlement:  If you do not exclude yourself from the Settlement Class, you can object to the Settlement, Class Counsel’s request for attorneys’ fees and expenses, and for a service award and reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses for the Settlement Class Representative. Objections must be filed or postmarked on or before the February 18, 2021.  For more information on how to object visit www.GasolineSignageSettlement.com.

Should I Hire An Attorney?  You do not need to hire your own attorney because Court-appointed Class Counsel is working on your behalf.  If you retain an individual attorney, you will need to pay for that attorney.

Final Approval Hearing:  The Court will hold the Final Approval Hearing on March 11, 2021 at 1:30 p.m.  You can go to this hearing, but you do not have to.  The Court will hear any objections, determine if the Settlement is fair, and consider Settlement Class Counsel’s request for attorneys’ fees and expenses, and for a service award and reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses for the Settlement Class Representative.

HOW DO I GET MORE INFORMATION?

This Notice is only a summary.  For more information, including the Settlement Agreement and other legal documents, visit www.GasolineSignageSettlement.com or contact the administrator at 1-888-905-0604.

TORRANCE, Calif., Nov. 17, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Honda today gave the world its first glimpse of the all-new 2022 Civic on Twitch, the world’s leading live streaming entertainment service. The new Civic, shown in prototype form in a striking new color, Solar Flare Pearl, showcases a fresh, sporty and upscale new look for Honda’s iconic and immensely popular Civic.

Honda today gave the world its first glimpse of the all-new 2022 Civic on Twitch, the world’s leading live streaming entertainment service. The new Civic, shown in prototype form in a striking new color, Solar Flare Pearl, showcases a fresh, sporty and upscale new look for Honda’s iconic and immensely popular Civic.

The 11th-generation Civic draws inspiration from timeless elements of Honda design, including a low and wide stance, low beltline, clean and sophisticated detailing, and an open and airy cabin. The prototype model unveiled today presages the arrival of an all-new Civic lineup, beginning late spring 2021, with the launch of the Civic Sedan followed by the sporty and personal Civic Hatchback, performance-focused Civic Si, and the ultimate high-performance Civic: Type R.

Leveraging its strong presence in esports and gaming, Honda’s debut on Twitch is a nod to Civic’s industry-leading and global appeal with young buyers. The 10th-generation Civic has been an unparalleled success – America’s most popular car four years running2, and the most popular vehicle, car or light truck with Millennials, Gen Z, first-time new vehicle buyers and a growing population of multicultural customers since its 2015 launch3. The 11th-generation Civic will build on that appeal with an even sportier, fun-to-drive new chassis, more powerful and fuel-efficient powertrains, multiple new Civic-first features and technologies, and further advances in active and passive safety features and performance.

“Civic has always exceeded expectations, and the all-new Civic will continue that legacy of setting the standard for compact cars with human-centered design, outstanding dynamics, style, safety performance and driver enjoyment,” said Dave Gardner, executive vice president of National Operations, American Honda Motor Co., Inc.

Civic Exterior Design – Timeless Civic Values for the Modern Era

In redesigning Civic, stylists and engineers revisited timeless design concepts of past Civics, focusing on Honda’s essential and human-centered “Man-Maximum, Machine-Minimum” (M/M) philosophy, where the purpose of technology and design is to serve the needs of the driver and passengers. The styling manifests these timeless design concepts in a fresh and exhilarating new way.

The design team started with the fundamentals, imbuing the new Civic with a dynamic shape and sporty stance. Carrying forward the low CG package of the 10th–generation model, including its low overall height and low hip point, designers applied the classic Civic design ethos of “thin and light” body design with a low hood and front fenders, and a low horizontal beltline that grounds the body, accentuating the wheels and tires, and enabling an expansive and airy greenhouse with exceptional outward visibility.

In executing its concept, the team also made substantial changes to the Civic’s upper body design to maximize visibility for the driver and passengers, including moving the front roof pillars rearward relative to the driver, to place them more in the visual periphery, and relocating the side mirrors to the doors for a clearer view through the front side windows.

The new face of Civic features a clean and sophisticated look, emphasizing a low and wide stature with strong horizontal elements, including offsetting the upright grille below the headlights. In profile, the Civic’s greenhouse is moved rearward on the body, elongating the hood for a more premium side view. The sharp horizontal shoulder, or C-line, carves a gentle arc from the front fender to the taillights, lending continuity to the overall design, while the upswept R-line carries through the rear fenders to the rear reflectors, adding a feeling of motion even when standing still. In the rear, the wider track of Civic is complemented by new taillights that emphasize width and on-road stability, and a playfully upswept yet aerodynamically-efficient trailing edge to the trunk lid.

Interior – Classic Civic Design Boldly Reimagined

In similar fashion, the all-new Civic will get a dramatic interior makeover as it reimagines the clean and uncluttered lines of earlier generations of Civic, and advances essential Civic M/M values of outstanding ergonomics and exceptional visibility, all while incorporating modern design elements and technology.

The instrument panel is free of visual clutter, minimizing cut lines and breaks to give drivers a clean and clear view of the road ahead, with the door top and dash line blending harmoniously. Stretching the width of the dash is a honeycomb mesh accent, which serves not only as a design element, but also conceals the visually busy air vents.

The 11th-generation also will introduce multiple new Civic-first technologies, including an all-digital driver’s meter cluster and a new 9-inch full-HD Display Audio touchscreen mounted atop the low-set instrument panel.

Civic Safety – Advancing Small-Car Safety Performance

True to its mission of advancing small-car safety performance, the 11th-generation Civic will introduce multiple new active and passive safety systems, including an upgraded suite of Honda Sensing® safety and driver-assistive technologies, and multiple new airbag designs. Furthermore, the new Civic comes with an advanced new version of Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure with both improved occupant and pedestrian collision protection. The new, more rigid body structure also will contribute to further advances in Civic’s driving refinement, ride quality and sporty handling.

Civic Popularity Sales Success Spanning Six Decades

The 10th-generation Civic has been a runaway success, establishing itself as the most popular car in America, earning the trust of more than 1.5 million U.S. customers since its 2015 launch, out-retailing every passenger car in America4. It extends a legacy of success that includes nearly 12 million Civics sold in the U.S. since its 1973 introduction, making it one of the top three best-selling cars in America over the past 47 years5. The iconic Civic has been the No. 1 vehicle among Millennial buyers since 20116, making Honda the top brand in loyalty with Millennials7. In addition, Honda captures the most Gen Z car buyers in the industry7, where Civic leads the industry as the most purchased vehicle by the Gen Z audience8. Civic also is the No. 1 vehicle in the industry with multicultural buyers8.

The 11th-generation will continue Civic’s legacy of being built in North America and, for the first time, Civic Hatchback will be manufactured in the U.S., at the company’s Greensburg, Indiana plant. Honda’s commitment to building products in America spans four decades. Civic joined Honda’s North America-made lineup in 1986 with production in Ohio. Today, Civic is produced at two plants in North America, in Greensburg, Indiana, and in Alliston, Ontario, Canada. Since 1986, Honda has produced more than 10.5 million Civics in North America, five million of those in the United States.

Civic Prototype Twitch Reveal

Honda has a significant presence in gaming and esports, and is the first and only automaker in North America to sponsor both an esports team, and a league, as the exclusive automotive partner of Team Liquid and the Riot Games League of Legends Championship Series. In addition, Honda’s gaming platform includes a partnership with Twitch. Twitch is home to the three-year-running Honda Head2Head gaming channel, which is the exclusive auto-branded gaming channel on the platform.

With Twitch’s average daily visitors reaching 17.5 million, Honda aims to grab the attention of the audience behind the explosive growth of esports. The deeply enthusiastic fans share a similar passion for Civic, making the nameplate America’s most popular vehicle of any kind with Millennial, Gen Z and multicultural consumers8. Honda’s integration of the all-new Civic reveal in prototype form on its Head2Head Twitch channel one-ups the brand’s commitment in the gaming space.

The live reveal of the 11th-generation Civic prototype today on Honda’s Head2Head Twitch channel was hosted by Rachel Seltzer and MonsterDface, with eight top streamers who battled it out in Fortnite, the world’s most popular battle royale game, ranking second on Twitch’s most streamed games. The reveal included a live performance by Honda Stage artist, Cordae.

Stanford Children’s Health Launches Virtual HIV-Prevention Program

Using telehealth virtual visits, the Stanford Medicine Virtual PrEP Program, in partnership with Stanford Children’s Health, connects youth with pediatric and adolescent care providers specifically trained to provide sexual health counseling, labs, and adherence support for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).

STANFORD, Calif., Nov. 19, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Stanford Children’s Health has launched the Stanford Medicine Virtual Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Program for Adolescents and Young Adults, which provides accessible and comprehensive HIV-prevention services, including PrEP, from a dedicated team of providers for adolescents and young adults 25 years and younger across the state of California.

https://mma.prnewswire.com/media/508605/Packard_Childrens_Logo.jpg

Using a secure telehealth system, youth enrolled in the Stanford Medicine Virtual PrEP Program, in partnership with Stanford Children’s Health, are connected with a pediatric and adolescent care provider specifically trained to provide sexual health counseling, labs, and adherence support for PrEP—a daily pill that when taken correctly reduces the risk of contracting HIV by more than 99 percent. PrEP is recommended for all adults and adolescents who are at risk (or anticipated risk) for HIV infection.

Serving the unique needs of youth
In California, youth account for approximately 20 percent of new HIV diagnoses, yet they have the lowest reported PrEP use compared with older age groups. Stanford Children’s Health is the largest health care organization in the country that is working to address this gap in care for young patients and focused on providing PrEP access specifically for youth.

“Our mission is to improve access to quality PrEP care for adolescents and young adults,” said Geoff Hart-Cooper, MD, founder and medical director of the Virtual PrEP Program. “Discussing sexual health, particularly among adolescents who may still receive care from a pediatrician, can be uncomfortable for patients and even some providers. Our team of dedicated PrEP Navigators are specifically trained to provide an accepting, inclusive, and confidential environment to meet the needs of these patients and start individuals on treatment as soon as possible.”

Care provided through the Virtual PrEP Program is conducted remotely using a patient’s mobile device or computer. Following a virtual intake visit, patients are mailed an at-home testing kit; ongoing labs are conducted every three months at a local clinical laboratory, PrEP prescriptions are fulfilled via a patient’s local pharmacy, and patients have biweekly video calls with their dedicated PrEP Navigator. The program is available to anyone in the state of California regardless of whether they are an existing Stanford patient, and in almost all cases the cost is supported through various patient assistance programs.

“The remote nature of the Virtual PrEP Program eliminates the need for patients to travel to a care facility, making ongoing care convenient and efficient, which is especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Hart-Cooper said. “Virtual care allows us to meet youth where they are, even during transition to college or other moves, and offers an added layer of confidentiality, as it allows providers to communicate with patients one-on-one, without involving a parent or other guardian if that is the patient’s preference.”

Bridging the gap for providers
In addition to providing care for patients, the Virtual PrEP Program offers provider-training webinars to educate pediatricians throughout California about prescribing and monitoring PrEP.

“Some providers, particularly pediatricians, may not be aware of or trained to provide HIV-prevention tools, such as PrEP, or may not have experience discussing sexual health with young patients, which can make it difficult for youth to disclose sexual behavior, or lead to concerns about confidentiality,” said Megen Vo, MD, associate medical director of the Virtual PrEP Program. “By connecting patients with providers specifically dedicated to administering PrEP support, the Virtual PrEP Program is mitigating these existing barriers to treatment, and the remote nature of the program enables us to accept youth referrals from physicians all over the state of California.”

The impact of COVID-19: Addressing inequities in health care
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, HIV disproportionately affects minorities, impacting one in two Black men who have sex with men (MSM) and one in four Latinx MSM, compared with one in 11 white MSM. Furthermore, white MSM are significantly more likely to report PrEP awareness, or engage in discussions about it with a provider, than Black or Latinx MSM. At the same time, these racial and ethnic minorities are most likely to be affected by COVID-19.

“Throughout the pandemic, providers have witnessed a dramatic decrease in PrEP use among new and continuing patients alike, and most commonly among minority patients younger than 26 years old,” said Carrie Chan, NP, associate medical director of the Virtual PrEP Program. “Our virtual care model can improve access to PrEP among racial and ethnic minorities, as well as provide specialized youth support, which is more critical than ever as we face the economic insecurities and health outcomes that are disproportionately affecting these groups during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

CAPA Mission: The California Alcohol Policy Alliance (CAPA) shall unite diverse organizations and communities in California to protect health and safety, and prevent alcohol-related harm through statewide action.

CAPA Platform: Current core issues leading to specific advocacy and policy change action items.

  • Raise the price of alcohol through taxes and fees, supporting the “Charge for Harm” concept that the industry should pay for treatment, prevention and all other costs to government.
  • Limit alcohol advertising in all media, especially on government-controlled property and where children or targeted populations are exposed.
  • Make the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control effective, efficient, transparent, and accountable to public health and safety concerns of the community, and not to cater to industry profits and license expediency, through policies that reduce alcohol outlet density and increase funding for alcohol control, regulation, and enforcement.
  • Eliminate product lines (such as alcopops and malt liquors) oriented to underage youth and vulnerable or targeted populations.
  • Reduce the allowable blood alcohol content for drivers as “Point .05 Saves Lives”
  • Improve labelling and out-of-home advertising of all alcohol products to ensure a) no marketing to youth, b) no indications of unsubstantiated health claims, c) display of alcohol content by volume and percentage and d) display of harms.
