The Caribbean’s First Non-Profit Investigative News Network Launches

0
CIJN_Logo

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Jan. 6, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The Caribbean Investigative Journalism Network (CIJN) just launched with the unveiling of four deep dive exposés produced by over a dozen Caribbean journalists. CIJN is a project of the Media Institute of the Caribbean (MIC) which is headquartered in Kingston, Jamaica.

The four long-form multimedia investigative stories were led by former Los Angeles Times publisher and editor, Davan Maharaj; former CNN anchor and correspondent, Jim Clancy; senior Caribbean journalist, Wesley Gibbings; and Caribbean-based media executive, Kiran Maharaj.

Maharaj, President of MIC and Co-founder of CIJN, said the CIJN initiative was meant to “create space for our Caribbean region on the global map of quality investigative reporting…. in small island nations we are straddled with the constraints of lack of resources, and the constant fear that our identities will be known and our lives at risk.”

The ISIS story reveals a trail of activities related to the recruitment of Islamist militants by a network of organizations in the twin-island state.

Human Trafficking in Plain Sight explores the sordid realities of human trafficking arising out of the turmoil in Venezuela. The existence of criminal networks working in tandem with corrupt police, immigration authorities and businesses is investigated in harrowing detail.

The team’s investigation of heavy Chinese investments in the Caribbean traces the growing influence of the Asian economic giant on regional development. Using supporting data, the story examines the impact of opaque investments in Caribbean mega-projects on a legacy of debt and geo-political influence in the Americas.

CIJN reviews the ill-fated PetroCaribe energy deals with the Caribbean; unravelling details on how an oil alliance founded by Chavez to confront U.S. influence in the Caribbean collapsed into broken deals, dashed hopes and rampant corruption.

Speaking at the launch, Jamaica correspondent, Steffon Campbell, said he saw the regional network of investigative journalists as being capable of seeing “the bigger picture; a regional picture; a transnational picture.”

MIC is a member of the Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIJN), Global Forum for Media Development (GMFD), Institute for Non-Profit News (INN) and the International Press Institute (IPI). Its Advisory Board comprises leading media leaders, journalists and media development players from North America, Europe and the Caribbean.

Page_Publishing_Hernandez

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Jan. 6, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The book Isla de la Esperanza was created by Ramon “Monsho” Hernandez, he shares: “She left her adolescence and entered the youth in an unexpected way, seeing herself surrounded by loneliness, waiting for her pregnancy to arrive in an uncomplicated way.

The first year, he survived with abandoned food, lots of water and canned food, lacking electricity, gas, and drinking water. Instead, a source of clear and pure water flowed from the very bowels of the extinct volcano that was the island.

Finding a way to be self-sufficient, producing food in places previously designed for that purpose, and discovering magical places, he found peace, tranquility, and hope necessary to continue waiting for the day of rescue.

Four years after the arrival, a visitor arrives, who was a companion of tragedy in that fateful airplane. He promises to expose his own life in exchange for taking her out of that wonderful place that, although a prison, was a magical, mystical, and very real place as unreal.

When the rescue arrives, he realizes that it will be somewhat difficult for his son, who was born with a deficiency. That way, he experiences a difficult reality until he reaches his hometown. Everything is clarified, and as the inevitable hour of his son approaches, he realizes the mystery by which he managed to survive all that time on the island of hope.”

Published by Page Publishing, Ramon “Monsho” Hernandez’s new book, Isla de la Esperanza, follows the fascinating life of a man who survives the toils of a faraway with courage, ingenuity, and hope, along with a realization that brings wonder to his heart.

Consumers who wish to learn the power of faith while facing the arduous reality through the life of the book’s protagonist can purchase Isla de la Esperanza in any bookstore, or online at Apple iTunes, Amazon.com, Google Play, or Barnes and Noble.

Miguel Angel Elizarrarás Cervantes’s New Book Tocando Estrellas Con Los Dedos, Is A Well-Conceived Compendium Of Poems That Inspires A Revival Of Romanticism Within The Self

Page_Publishing_Miguel_Angel_Elizarrar_s_Cervantes

CHICAGO, Jan. 6, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The book Tocando estrellas con los dedos was created by Miguel Angel Elizarrarás Cervantes. Miguel is an author who is of Mexican descent and currently resides in the Chicago area of the United States.

Miguel said this about his book: “Love, loneliness, melancholy, happiness, also of life and death, are just some of the feelings that are intertwined in this collection of poems, which today are not only part of this book but also part of the life and transition that the author lived as a human being, as a lover, and as a man who today becomes a simple editor of his own feelings and events that he had to go through and that surely we have ever passed in our lives.

In Touching Stars with Your Fingers, we will find not only a beautiful poem that makes us sigh, a phrase that we can dedicate, or a story that may make us reflect; but we will also find a reunion with the lost tranquility, which this world has taken from us under the popular hustle and hard work that happens to every person every day and at the same time deprives us of giving us some peace, which we lack so much today since stress, work, and the daily routine has not allowed us to let ourselves be carried away by the softness of a romantic reading or to allow us to conquer the loved one again with poetry and romanticism. With the tenderness and passion of a verse, we go back again in the taste of what yesteryear of the old—as in those yesterdays the great poets glimpsed in their poems which we were so fond of being carried away by the caress of their poems and the narration of their experiences.”

Published by Page Publishing, Miguel Angel Elizarrarás Cervantes’s new book Tocando estrellas con los dedos will uplift the hearts of readers through its blend of touching poems that evoke love and romance.

Consumers who wish to feel the beauty of loving and being loved ingrained within poetic verses can purchase Tocando estrellas con los dedos in any bookstore, or online at Apple iTunes, Amazon.com, Google Play, or Barnes and Noble.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif., Jan. 3, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — César Muñoz said this about his book: “Thirty-six Days tells the story where a Mexican family was a victim of organized crime. On December 13, 2014, in La Laja, municipality of Ajuchitlán, Guerrero, falling into his house, armed civilians destroyed the house and took Mr. Ángel Muñoz and two of his daughters, depriving them of their freedom. They were taken to an unknown destination where they would have them tied hand and foot for about three days and then change them from where they would spend thirty-three more days. They would keep them and a twenty to twenty-five other people in a forested hill in a cave. There they would go hungry, cold, and have bad experiences and bitter days. They would watch and live all kinds of violence that those armed men did. They would be physically and mentally abused. It would take about twenty days for the leader of the subjects to arrive at that place and could give the order for the armed subjects to communicate with the family of the hostages to ask for the ransom money. When communicating with family members, they reached an agreement that they had to give a certain amount of money to free Mr. Ángel and his daughters. The agreed money was given in full, but the armed men only released the two daughters and left the father with them so they could ask for more money for his freedom. Time passed, and Mr. Angel weakened more and more. The date of when he would be released was unknown. On day thirty-six, the army, federal police, and the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) would carry out an operation where they would rescue Mr. Ángel Muñoz, along with twenty-three other people who were kidnapped and were also in the same place. They would capture thirteen alleged kidnappers that would be placed under the SEIDO. Mr. Ángel would be transferred to the hospital where he would be treated and would meet with his whole family.”

Published by Page Publishing, César Muñoz’s new book Treinta y Seis Días will reveal to readers the grueling moments of a family in fear of agonizing violence and threats of death and how the government and society put effort to save them from further pain.

Consumers who wish to be unraveled with true-lo-life circumstances surrounding the abduction and rescue of a family from organized crime can purchase Treinta y Seis Días in any bookstore, or online at Apple iTunes, Amazon.com, Google Play, or Barnes and Noble.
