The Cruise Industry Remains Committed to Both the Recovery of Grand Bahama and Abaco and Bringing More Guests to the Unaffected Majority of The Bahamas

MIRAMAR, Florida, Oct. 14, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — While the world mourns the destruction of Abaco and Grand Bahama and seeks ways to help the destinations build back better, the cruise industry continues to prove its commitment. Just a month after the historic event, Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA), the trade association that represents the mutual interests between the cruise industry and Caribbean and Latin American destinations and stakeholders, and its Member Lines, which operate more than 95 percent of the global ocean cruising capacity, have already provided and/or raised $8 million in donation pledges, more than 10 million pounds of food and supplies, 20,000 meals a day, hundreds of millions of dollars in accelerated investment plans and hundreds of thousands of marketing dollars focused on educating that most of The Bahamas is open, including 14 of its most-visited islands that are welcoming guests every day, and the best way consumers can help is to visit.

“Though we still mourn for all those impacted in Abaco and Grand Bahama, it is humbling and heartwarming to see our Member Lines’ enormous effort to not only provide the necessary relief, but also work with those in the destination toward sustainable recovery,” said Michele Paige, president, FCCA. “On behalf of FCCA, we are honored to help support that recovery in any way we can, and currently one of the best things any of us can do is visit The Bahamas, as nearly half of its GDP relies on tourism, and broadcast the message that most of its islands are open and welcoming guests every day.”

FCCA Member Lines have already donated and/or raised $8 million in relief efforts for The Bahamas, while also launching efforts to collect and provide support, resulting in more than 10 million pounds of food and supplies – filling over 250 shipping containers – by Carnival Corporation; 20,000 meals per day, as well as water, medical supplies, generators, and a team of specially trained employees and volunteers to assist with logistics and food and beverage efforts by Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.; 400 pallets of humanitarian aid – along with 300 qualified volunteer and 150 Bahamians – on a single relief mission by Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line; MSC Group using its cargo and cruise resources to help, with a focus on providing semi-permanent prefabricated modular housing; and Disney Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings are also using their cruise ships to deliver supplies and support.*

Additionally, FCCA Member Lines have sent high-level delegations to work directly toward both providing the most impactful relief and building toward sustainable recovery, while also reaffirming and accelerating investment projects that represent $455 million by Carnival Corporation and RCCL.

FCCA Member Lines also worked with the destination to relaunch cruise tourism and reinject its economic benefit as soon as possible, with cruise tourism calculated to have generated $405.75 million, in addition to 9,004 jobs paying $155.71 million in wage income, in The Bahamas during the 2017-18 cruise season and one average cruise call to the destination representing more than $650,000 in local economic benefits.

FCCA included The Bahamas in its award-winning, multi-faceted marketing campaign, Caribbean Is Open / Caribbean for Everyone, which began in September 2017 following Hurricanes Irma and Maria and generated more than 5.77 billion impressions, while showing a measurable improvement in Caribbean cruise bookings, between Oct. 2, 2017Oct. 28, 2018.

For initiatives tied to The Bahamas, focused on educating that most of The Bahamas is open, including 14 of its most-visited islands that are welcoming guests every day, and the best way consumers can help is to visit, as of Oct. 11, the efforts have already generated an audience of 78,656,435; 490 media placements; and promoted content with 13,873 clicks, 17,987 engagements and 150,527 video views with 59,357 minutes viewed, on track for more than 200,000 views by the end of October on social media alone – and other planned initiatives including the cover story in Travel & Cruise, the official magazine of the cruise industry, and sponsored e-mail content in partnership with Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA).

Additionally, FCCA has remained in constant contact with The Bahamas, while leveraging its resources throughout the industry to help the destination and its people in any way possible, including assisting to coordinate relief efforts and meetings, as well as providing numerous ways for Bahamian locals to further capitalize on the cruise industry’s economic potential.

Many of those opportunities and discussions will be engaged at the upcoming FCCA Cruise Conference & Trade Show, the largest and only official cruise conference and trade show in the Caribbean. With more than 150 high-level executives, including a record number of chairmen and above, from FCCA Member Lines on hand for the series of meetings, workshops and networking opportunities from Oct. 21-25, the #BahamasStrong delegation will have the chance to work directly with the cruise industry, and FCCA has coordinated specialized meetings and events for the delegation.

EL PASO, Texas, Oct. 14, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Today at an event in El Paso, Texas, Microsoft President Brad Smith joined community and government leaders to announce the expansion of Microsoft TechSpark El Paso, Texas to include Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. Smith also announced a $1.5 million Microsoft investment in The Bridge Accelerator, its new signature project in partnership with Technology-Hub (T-Hub) to drive innovation, digital skills, and economic opportunity in the El Paso-Juárez region.

Left to Right: Ricardo Mora, CEO of Technology-Hub; Chihuahua Governor Javier Corral; Microsoft President, Brad Smith; Governor of the State of Texas, Greg Abbott; and Secretary of Innovation and Economic Development for the State of Chihuahua, Alejandra De La Vega

Microsoft TechSpark was launched in 2017 to help spark job creation and economic opportunity in six communities in the U.S., including the diverse border city of El Paso, TX. TechSpark is focused on promoting digital skills and employability, increasing access to broadband, and helping local organizations thrive by embracing new technologies.

El Paso is a vibrant bilingual, bicultural city that is part of a singular binational community that encompasses the larger city of Juarez on the Mexican side of the border. The cities’ proximity makes international border crossing of people, goods and ideas a fundamental part of life for residents on both sides. The two cities have shared a common history, economy, natural resources (water), and cultural values for more than 400 years, which has resulted in a strong, interdependent relationship.

El Paso and Ciudad Juarez converge in a cross-border flow of ideas, ambition, and aspirations that have shaped the region for centuries. This forward-looking spirit is what attracted us to the region in 2017 when we launched Microsoft TechSpark in El Paso to create new economic opportunities and help digitally transform established industries with modern software and cloud services. It’s also why today Microsoft is announcing that it is expanding the TechSpark El Paso program to include Ciudad Juarez and making a $1.5 million USD investment in the binational Bridge Accelerator.

As part of the expansion, Microsoft hired Omar Saucedo, who is based in Ciudad Juarez, to manage TechSpark Ciudad Juarez. He will work with local community partners, government leaders and non-profits to determine the best approach to create local impact. Omar is already working closely with TechSpark El Paso manager, JJ Childress.

Through partnerships with local businesses, non-profits and governments, the El Paso-Juárez region can become a leader in advanced manufacturing, advanced logistics, business services and ensure the people here have access to skills to be future-ready.

“The future of TechSpark El Paso-Juárez is grounded in the binational foundation developed over the course of hundreds of years,” said Saucedo. “Together, we can make sure people in the region have the skills to participate in a digital economy and the core industries have the support they need to foster technology innovation, economic development, and high-growth scalable businesses.”

At the event, Smith also announced its signature project in the region: The Bridge Accelerator in partnership with T-Hub, a binational business incubator built to stimulate regional innovation, entrepreneurship and industry. The Bridge Accelerator is an intensive program designed to accelerate the growth of business on both sides of the border.

Earlier this year, Microsoft partnered with T-Hub on The Bridge Accelerator pilot program to send a cohort of 10 businesses – five from El Paso and five from Juárez. The results were impressive. Since the pilot ended in July, businesses that went through The Bridge Accelerator saw:

  • 52 new purchase orders totaling nearly $1.4 million USD close and another 36 purchase orders are pending
  • 33 new jobs were created in the region
  • Two investments totaling $250,000 have been committed and four more investments are pending

The results of The Bridge Accelerator were so impressive that Microsoft has announced that it will be investing in T-Hub to make it a long-term program.

Microsoft is committed to creating opportunity for everyone, including the underserved Hispanic population. Microsoft believes the TechSpark model of a deep, long-term community partnership can help communities address their unique needs, create a future-ready workforce, and be a catalyst for economic investment across the country, and borders.

Acura captured the 2019 DPi Manufacturers' Drivers and Team championships Saturday at the IMSA season-ending Petit Le Mans race at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta. In addition the company took the Drivers' and Team titles in the GTD division with the Acura NSX GT3.

BRASELTON, Georgia, Oct. 14, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Acura, its teams and drivers completed its championship-winning IMSA season in Saturday’s season-ending Petit Le Mans, putting the finishing touches on the Driver, Manufacturer and Team titles in the featured Daytona Prototype International division at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.

Meanwhile, in the GTD division, Meyer Shank Racing claimed the Drivers’ and Teams’ Championships with the Acura NSX GT-3 Evo.

Acura Team Penske ARX-05
Finishing a season highlighted by race wins at Mid-Ohio, Detroit and Watkins Glen, and podium finishes in nine of the 10 races in 2019, Acura officially secured the Manufacturers’ Championship at the start of today’s season finale. But the fight for the drivers’ and teams’ titles went down to the final laps of the 10-hour endurance contest.

With the #31 Cadillac of Felipe Nasr, Pipo Derani and Eric Curran claiming the win, the #6 Acura ARX-05 of Dane Cameron, Juan Pablo Montoya and Simon Pagenaud needed to finish eighth or higher for full-season drivers Cameron and Montoya to take the championships for themselves and Acura Team Penske.

With Montoya running sixth following the final round of pit stops, a caution flag with just under 30 minutes remaining bunched the field together for a sprint to the finish. Closing drivers Montoya and Ricky Taylor in the #7 Acura gained positions in the final laps, with Taylor claiming third at the checkers in the car he shared with Helio Castroneves and Graham Rahal. Montoya followed his teammate home in fourth to claim his first IMSA championship, a second prototype title for co-driver Cameron, and the Teams crown for Acura Team Penske.

Meyer Shank Racing Acura NSX GT3 Evo
Following a season that included one win and four second-place finishes in 10 races, teammates Mario Farnbacher and Trent Hindman claimed the GTD drivers’ title at the start of today’s race, with their Meyer Shank Racing team claiming the Teams Championship at the same time.

The #86 Acura NSX GT3 Evo ran as high as fourth with starting driver Justin Marks, who joined Farnbacher and Hindman for the long-distance races this year. However, debris punctured the radiator as the race approached the five-hour mark, and the resulting coolant leak and overheating led to the car’s retirement.

Teammates Katherine Legge, Christina Nielsen and Bia Figueiredo kept their Heinricher/MSR Acura NSX GT3 Evo in contention throughout the race. Running a triple stint to close out the race, Legge was in a three-way battle for fifth place in the final laps, until a passing prototype forced her Acura off the racing line, dropping the #57 Caterpillar Acura to a seventh-place finish.

Next
Saturday’s race concluded the 2019 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Acura will return to defend its prototype and GTD titles in the 2020 season, which opens January 25 with the Rolex 24 at the famed Daytona International Speedway.

Quotes
Dane Cameron (#6 Acura Team Penske ARX-05) wins 2019 DPi Drivers’ Championship with co-driver Juan Pablo Montoya; Acura wins the DPi Manufacturers’ Championship and Acura Team Penske claims the DPi Teams’ Championship: “It’s a tremendous day. It was a little too close for comfort there in the last couple of hours, but we did exactly what we needed to do. We didn’t have a ton of pace [in the race] for the first time all year, but we had a plan and executed perfectly. Congratulations to everyone at Acura and HPD for their support and making this night possible.”

Juan Pablo Montoya (#6 Acura Team Penske ARX-05) wins 2019 DPi Drivers’ Championship with co-driver Dane Cameron: “I’ve been lucky, I won a couple of Indianapolis 500s, Formula One races, NASCAR races, I can’t complain. I came into this program at the start last year and to win the championship for Acura and Acura Team Penske is amazing. Everyone in the program did an amazing job all season long. The support from Acura has been incredible. Hopefully, we can grow on it into the future.”

Trent Hindman (#86 Meyer Shank Racing Acura NSX GT3 Evo) won GTD Drivers’ Championship with co-driver Mario Farnbacher, Meyer Shank Racing also claims the GTD Teams’ Championship: “It’s a little bit bittersweet [dropping out of the race]. I mean, we had a really excellent car all weekend long, as we have all season. So, it’s a shame we couldn’t capitalize on that [in the race today] and help our teammates secure the Manufacturers’ Championship. But it’s also very sweet. We got the drivers’ and teams’ championships wrapped up, and that’s just an incredible feeling. Thank you to everyone at Acura, HPD, Auto Nation, Sirius/XM, all the Meyer Shank Racing guys, my co-drivers Mario and Justin, and most important, Mike [Shank] for opening up this opportunity for me.”

Mario Farnbacher (#86 Meyer Shank Racing Acura NSX GT3 Evo) won GTD Drivers’ Championship with co-driver Trent Hindman: “It’s definitely a really cool feeling [to win the championship] and I am so proud of this team. It’s pretty cool that I had my first race in America at Road Atlanta and now to win the championship here is pretty special. The trust that Michael Shank, HPD and Acura have put in me is an amazing feeling. Mike always wants 100 percent out of us every time we race, and to be able to do that for him and give him this championship is such an accomplishment. I couldn’t have asked for better teammates this year and I will remember this championship forever.”

Jon Ikeda (Vice President and Acura Brand Officer): on Acura’s 2019 IMSA championship-winning season: “We started this motorsports journey in 2017. To be here and winning championships after just three years is just incredible. I can’t say enough about Mike Shank and his Meyer Shank team, who have been with us from the start. Roger Penske and his team are the gold standard of the industry. We partnered with winners, and we’ve gotten great support from everyone at HPD with their tireless efforts. Acura is a performance brand. We’re here to win races and compete for championships. And we’re not done yet.”

Olives from Spain wants to pay tribute to this confluence of civilizations on such an important date with a trio of irresistible recipes that bring together the best of the American and European culture using the versatile and tasty olives.

Within the framework of the Have an Olive Day campaign, the prestigious culinary innovator, chef José Andrés, has been introducing European olives into the North American market for more than two years and has become a bridge where the best of the gastronomy of the two continents meet. His success is due, in large part, to the versatility and the range of possibilities offered by olives in the kitchen through countless culinary formats (whole olives, sliced, pitted…) and varieties (Manzanilla, Queen, stuffed with Pimiento…).

This fruit is capable of transforming boring dishes into original elaborations with an endless number of nuances even for the most demanding palates, since olives have the four basic flavors: acidic, bitter, sweet and salty.

Mexican tacos with olives

Our version of tacos has chicken, black beans, cheese and, of course, Manzanilla olives.

Olive and cheese tequeños

Dr. Sara Malagold’s New Book As My Grandmother Used To Say: Crazier Than A Goat Is A True Guide To Achieve Peace And Emotional Happiness In Daily Life

0
Dra__Sara_Malagold

WASHINGTON, Oct. 14, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Dr. Sara Malagold is a successful specialist in the field of human behavior. She graduated with degrees in Psychology and Neuropsychology. She was born in Uruguay, Montevideo, on September 27. She grew up in a home surrounded by music since her father was a concert violinist. “My father was my engine. He always motivated me to study,” Dr. Sara recalls. “I was encouraged to be someone in life. He said wise words to me while I was growing, which today I transmit to my patients. My father taught me that I had to study and to achieve my goals. ‘Education is the only thing left, since money comes and goes,’ he repeated to me. I think this was one of the best tips that prompted me to be who I am today,” she says.

Dr. Sara speaks four languages perfectly: Hebrew, English, French, and of course, her mother tongue, Spanish. Her different degrees helped her to become a professor at different universities and a researcher for various pharmaceutical companies.

As My Grandmother Used to Say: Crazier than a Goat has a simple and enlightening message. We all have a unique and powerful force that can guide us positively in the development of our potential. But that energy often seems asleep, dull, and wasted. We live rooted in unquestionable conventions, full of fears, myths, irrational mandates, impositions instead of explanations or manipulations instead of negotiations.

The pathology disguised as camaraderie and negativity seizing our vulnerability causes us to gradually stop laughing, moving, and even dreaming.

This book uses a simple metaphorical resource such as the behavior of a goat to describe that much-deserved happiness in human beings because goats appear to have a “crazy” life to the incomprehensible eye of others. They jump and jump and happily satisfy their desires and needs.

We should all be clear about our own needs, desires, and concerns and learn to bring down the ghost of the unreal to unleash our true capacity. As My Grandmother Used to Say: Crazier than a Goat will make you laugh, cry, reflect, and identify. Most importantly, it will make you wake up to your fantastic personal goat.

Dr. Malagold concludes, “You always have to dream. Never stop doing it. Moving on is what will make you feel alive, even if people don’t understand you and think that you are crazier than a goat because maybe that madness is what will heal your soul.”

Published by New York City based Page Publishing, Dr. Sara Malagold’s wonderful book As My Grandmother used to Say: Crazier than a Goat brings us a wonderful compendium of teachings. The doctor speaks to us clearly and directly from her heart, inspired by her own experiences, and says she is willing to help the one who comes behind, encouraging women and men who, like her, seek to achieve their goals.

Readers who wish to experience this extraordinary work can purchase As My Grandmother Used to Say: Crazier than a Goat at bookstores everywhere or online at the Apple iTunes store, Amazon, Google Play, or Barnes and Noble.

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter: 2020 Habitat for Humanity work project to take place in Dominican Republic

Former President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter mark the announcement of the 2020 Carter Work Project by passing a ceremonial trowel to Cesarina Fabián and Celso Marranzini representing Habitat for Humanity Dominican Republic.

NASHVILLE, Tennessee, Oct. 11, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The Dominican Republic will become the 15th country to host Habitat for Humanity’s Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project, the former U.S. president announced today. The announcement of the November 2020 build came at the conclusion of the 36th Carter Work Project in Nashville.

Former President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter mark the announcement of the 2020 Carter Work Project by passing a ceremonial trowel to Cesarina Fabián and Celso Marranzini representing Habitat for Humanity Dominican Republic.

Since beginning their work with Habitat for Humanity in 1984, President and Mrs. Carter have helped to build, renovate and repair 4,390 homes in 14 countries alongside more than 104,000 volunteers through their annual work project. Since its founding in 1976, Habitat has served more than 22 million people around the world.

“We are honored to host the 2020 Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project in the Dominican Republic,” said Cesarina Fabián, national director of Habitat for Humanity Dominican Republic. “President and Mrs. Carter are shining examples of service. We are so grateful to their commitment to building a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.”

The 2020 build will mark the third time the project has been hosted in the Caribbean. The former president and first lady traveled to Haiti to build alongside homeowners and hundreds of other volunteers in 2011 and 2012.

According to the Dominican Republic’s National Statistics Office, the country faces a deficit of more than 2.1 million housing units, which increases by 50,000-60,000 every year. About 60 percent of the housing deficit is due to the quality and safety of the housing available, and about 40 percent is due to the lack of available homes.

This week in Nashville, the Carters joined hundreds of other volunteers to build 21 new Habitat for Humanity homes. An additional 12 new single-family homes and 26 new townhomes will be constructed by 2021 with support of funding raised for the project. In total, funds raised through the 2019 Carter Work Project will have served 59 Nashville families.

National Domestic Violence Hotline logo -- Operating around the clock, seven days a week, 24/7, confidential and free of cost, the National Domestic Violence Hotline (NDVH) provides lifesaving tools and immediate support to enable victims to find safety and live lives free of abuse.

“A recent reputation survey revealed that while we have a strong reputation as a national service provider, we had an opportunity to expand people’s understanding of our full spectrum of work, which includes crisis intervention, prevention and education, and data-informed policy work,” Ray-Jones said. “Many people may not think about hope when they think about abuse, but sharing hope and a vision for what life can be after abuse is one of the most important things we do. Our new brand communicates that.”

According to the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey, about 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men has experienced severe physical violence by an intimate partner at some point in their lifetime. In addition to launching the new brand during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, The Hotline is inviting the public to participate in a special campaign by sharing what they’re doing or what they plan to do to end the epidemic of domestic violence.

To join, participants are asked to tape a short message, 30-60 seconds on their phone, to answer the question “What is the one thing you plan to do to end domestic violence?” and then share their video on social media using the hashtags #1Thing and #DVAM. Just imagine if each of us committed to doing one thing – this collective action could create real social transformation.

The Hotline’s recently released 2018 Impact Report shows the organization received 573,670 contacts from people affected by domestic violence, an increase of 36% from 2017. Additionally, the report revealed the following:

Coupe-Inspired Design Modernizes All-New 2021 Toyota Mirai Sedan Concept

Elegant New Mirai Concept Based on Premium RWD Platform

PLANO, Texas, Oct. 10, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Toyota put the auto industry on the road to electrification in 1997 with the first Prius hybrid. Then, in 2015, it debuted the Mirai, the first production hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) offered for sale to retail customers in North America (Mirai means “future” in Japanese). Now, Toyota has revealed the second-generation Mirai, rebooted as a premium sedan with cutting-edge design, technology and driving performance.

Elegant New Mirai Concept Based on Premium RWD Platform

The Mirai is based on Toyota’s premium rear-wheel drive platform and debuts a dramatic yet refined coupe-inspired design with improved passenger room and comfort. The second-gen Mirai will go on sale in late 2020 and will deliver a significant evolution of Toyota’s hydrogen FCEV powertrain technology and offer a critical look into the future of Toyota’s lineup.

The dramatic change in design also signals a new driving experience from Mirai. A targeted 30-percent increase in range is achieved by an improvement in fuel cell system performance and increased hydrogen storage capacity. Additionally, the new Mirai will offer a more powerful, engaging and even quieter driving experience than its pioneering forerunner.

“We have pursued making a car that customers feel like driving all the time, a car that has emotional and attractive design appeal, as well as dynamic and responsive driving performance that can bring a smile to the faces of drivers,” said Yoshikazu Tanaka, Chief Engineer of the Mirai. “I want customers to say, ‘I chose the Mirai not because it’s an FCEV, but because I really wanted this car, and it just happened to be an FCEV.'”

At its core, the Mirai is an electric vehicle, but it never needs to be plugged in to recharge. An FCEV generates its own electricity onboard from hydrogen & oxygen, with water as the only tailpipe emission. A fill-up takes just about five minutes at an SAE-conforming hydrogen fueling station in California or Hawaii (with stations also planned for the Northeast and other areas).

Toyota is working to develop a line of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and includes FCEVs in its electrification roadmap. Toyota projects that fuel cell electric technology will one day be as common as the company’s hybrid electric technology.

Electrifying Style

The second-generation Mirai is built on a rear-wheel drive platform, a major departure from the original front-wheel drive version in terms of design. The new platform allows for a highly rigid body that is lower, longer, and wider, with its bolder stance accentuated by available 20-inch alloy wheels. The design is more aerodynamic, yet also emotionally evocative without being aggressive; zero-emissions doesn’t have to mean dull.

The new Mirai’s clean, modern profile was inspired by coupes, yet the new design is also more approachable than before. By taking advantage of the new platform, there’s more interior space which allows for five passenger seating for more family flexibility.

Accentuating the new Mirai’s smoother, more sculptural form is a brand-new blue color never before featured on a Toyota which achieves its brightness and deepness through a multiple-layer painting process.

The new Mirai’s interior matches the refined tone of the exterior, its clean and modern layout infused with a hint of futurism without appearing off-putting. Drivers of current conventional luxury models will feel immediately familiar behind the wheel of the new Mirai. To that end, Toyota made the cabin even quieter, enhancing the luxurious ambience.

The simple, flowing lines of the dash neatly integrate a higher level of user tech in the new Mirai, including a standard 8-inch digital combination meter and available digital rearview mirror that displays images from a rear camera. The standard Toyota Premium Multimedia system, which uses a 12.3-inch high-resolution TFT touchscreen, includes navigation and a 14-speaker JBL sound system.

Toyota’s Fuel Cell Future

Toyota remains committed to hydrogen fuel cell technology as a powertrain with tremendous potential. It’s a scalable technology, which means it can be made small enough to power a phone or large enough to power a building, or anything in between. For example, Toyota installed fuel cell powertrains into a test fleet of Kenworth class-8 semi-trucks that can pull a maximum 80,000-lb. load. These powerful, zero-emission big rigs are currently used for moving freight in and around the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, California.

More FCEVs are planned to enter the market over the next few years, as the cost, size and weight of fuel cell systems continue to decrease and the fueling infrastructure grows. Among the advantages of FCEV technology is a quick refueling time (about the same as conventional gasoline-fueled vehicles).

What’s an FCEV?

Even motorists familiar with EVs may still be unacquainted with FCEVs. The easiest way to understand an FCEV is that it is a “plug-less” electric vehicle. There’s no need to charge the battery, which can take several hours in an EV, even with fast charging. Instead, the FCEV driver simply fills the tank in about five minutes, not much longer than millions do every day with conventional vehicles.

With an FCEV, however, the fuel is compressed hydrogen rather than gasoline. A fuel cell system combines the stored hydrogen with oxygen from the air, and the result is (1) electric current, (2) heat, and (3) water.

Fuel cell technology predates the automobile by more than half a century. In 1839, a Welsh physicist combined hydrogen and oxygen in the presence of an electrolyte and produced an electric current. By the 1960s, the technology was being used in America’s Gemini and Apollo spacecraft, where it provided crews with both electricity and water from stored hydrogen and oxygen. It is used widely in a variety of industries and applications around the world. Hydrogen can be produced locally and sustainably.

Fuel cells had been studied for the automotive sector, but the technology only recently became practical and cost-effective. Toyota began its fuel cell development around the same time as the original Prius 20+ years ago, and the Mirai shares some of the technology & components from the company’s hybrid program. Toyota developed the solid-polymer electrolyte fuel cells used in the first- and second-generation Mirai models, and, to help foster FCEV proliferation, the company has released its patents, royalty-free.

The fuel cell is composed of an anode, a cathode, and an electrolyte membrane. Hydrogen is passed through the anode, and oxygen through the cathode. The hydrogen molecules are split into electrons and protons. As protons pass through the electrolyte membrane, electrons travel along a circuit, generating an electric current and heat. At the cathode, the protons, electrons, and oxygen combine to produce water molecules. There are no other byproducts, just pure water.
