FEMA and the Ad Council Launch Public Service Announcement for National Preparedness Month

0

WASHINGTON, Aug. 27, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — FEMA and the Ad Council kick off National Preparedness Month with new public service announcements from FEMA’s Ready Campaign that promote the importance of preparing children and teenagers for possible emergencies and disasters.

Experience the interactive Multichannel News Release here: https://www.multivu.com/players/English/8594951-ad-council-fema-national-preparedness-month-psa/

Involving young people in preparedness efforts can help youth, families and communities be prepared and able to respond when faced with disasters.

The campaign products this year, with the tagline “Prepared, Not Scared,” encourage parents, teachers, and caregivers to visit Ready.gov/kids so they can teach our youth what to do when a crisis occurs, and how to take preparedness actions together.

“Imagine you are at work or at home and your child is at school or on a playdate when a disaster strikes.  Do they know what to do if you are not around?” said Acting FEMA Administrator Pete Gaynor. “It is important to have these conversations now and prepare ahead of time  to be ready for the unexpected.”

Production partner Newfangled Studios created pro bono TV, digital and out-of-home ads.  Additionally, FEMA is also teaming up with Sony Pictures on their upcoming film Zombieland: Double Tap to promote the crucial message of emergency preparedness.

“Emergency preparedness should be top of mind for every American,” says Chief Campaign Development Officer, Michelle Hillman. “For families with kids in the home, it’s especially important. This campaign will continue to empower families to have peace-of-mind knowing their children know what to do in case of a disaster.”

This preparedness effort by the Ready Campaign follows 16 years of educating the American public about disaster and emergency preparedness. In that time, $1.6 billion in donated media enabled the campaign to reach millions of Americans and encouraged more than 100 million visits to the campaign’s website, Ready.gov.

Each week of National Preparedness Month, the Ready Campaign will emphasize a unique aspect of preparedness:

  • September 1—7:         Save Early for Disaster Costs
  • September 8—14:       Make a Plan to Prepare for Disasters.
  • September 15—21:     Teach Youth to Prepare for Disasters
  • September 22—30:     Get Involved in Your Community’s Preparedness.

Editor’s Note: FEMA has made historic disaster footage available to media at the following location: https://www.fema.gov/media-library/multimedia/collections/641.

This collection contains historical footage from: 2017: Response and recovery for hurricanes Harvey and Maria, and the California wildfires; 2011: Joplin, MO, tornado; 1994: Northridge Earthquake.

LONG BEACH, California, Aug. 27, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — SCAN Health Plan®, one of the nation’s largest not-for-profit Medicare Advantage health plans, today announced the recent publication of the results from their Insights program—an innovative approach to delivering behavioral health services to seniors and their caregivers—in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. Offered by Independence at Home, a SCAN community service, Insights provides evaluation and management services for certain behavioral health conditions in home by licensed clinical social workers and marriage and family therapists, at no cost, and in the patient’s primary language; therefore, reducing the barriers to mental healthcare common in this population.

“Since launching the pilot Insights program in 2016, we have successfully served a demographically diverse population that experiences a broad range of barriers to mental healthcare,” stated Romilla Batra, MD, chief medical officer at SCAN Health Plan. “By offering no-cost, culturally and linguistically sensitive counselling directly in the patients’ own homes, we have seen a significant improvement in depression, anxiety and overall quality of life—not only among the seniors, but their caregivers, as well.”

According to the National Council on Aging, one in four older adults experience some mental disorder, including depression, anxiety, distress and grief. As barriers to adequate mental healthcare remain for many older adults, their ability to maintain health and independence suffer. Perhaps more than other age group, older adults buy into the stigma surrounding mental health and are reluctant to seek help. Access to treatment is further complicated by lack of understanding of treatment options, inadequate insurance coverage, lack of mobility and transportation, and a language or cultural mismatch with qualified providers. As the number of older adults is expected to double by 2020, the need for mental health services will become more critical.

“As the aging population continues to grow, we must identify and eliminate the obstacles that keep seniors and caregivers from receiving the necessary support,” continued Batra. “Here at SCAN, our goal is to meet the needs of seniors where they are. We remain committed to reducing these barriers and, through programs like Insights, improving patient outcomes and helping seniors maintain their health and independence.”

Food Safety When Eating Outdoors

US_Food_And_Drug_Administration_Food_Safety

SILVER SPRING, Md., Aug. 26, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Planning one last picnic before the summer season ends? As you plan your outing, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reminds you that foodborne bacteria multiply faster in warm weather – and the larger the dose of bacteria the more likely it will lead to food poisoning (also known as foodborne illness).

Follow these tips to pack your picnic basket with food safety in mind.

Basic Warm-Weather Precautions to Prevent Food Poisoning

Before your picnic

  • Defrost meat, poultry, and seafood in the refrigerator or by submerging sealed packages in cold water. You can also microwave-defrost, but only if the food will be grilled immediately afterward.
  • Marinate foods in the fridge not the countertop. Never reuse marinade that touched raw foods unless you boil it first or set some of the marinade aside before marinating food to use for sauce later.
  • Thoroughly wash all produce before eating, even if you plan to peel it. The knife you use to peel it can carry bacteria into the part you eat. Fruits and vegetables that are pre-cut or peeled should be refrigerated or kept on ice to maintain quality and safety.
  • If your picnic site doesn’t offer clean water access, bring water or pack moist towels for cleaning surfaces and hands. Don’t forget to pack a food thermometer!

When packing coolers

  • Place food from the refrigerator directly into an insulated cooler immediately before leaving home.
  • Use lots of ice or ice packs to keep your cooler at 40 °F or below.
  • Pack raw meat, poultry, and seafood in a separate cooler if possible, or wrap it securely and store at the bottom of the cooler where the juices can’t drip onto other foods. Place beverages in a separate cooler; this will offer easy drink access while keeping perishable food coolers closed.
  • Load coolers into the passenger side of the car – it’s cooler than the trunk. Once at the picnic site, keep food in coolers until serving time (out of direct sun) and avoid opening the lids often.

When grilling

  • Have clean utensils and platters available. Cook meat, poultry, and seafood to the right temperatures – use a food thermometer to be sure (see Safe Minimum Cooking Temperatures Chart). Keep cooked meats hot at 140 °F or warmer until serving time – set them to the side of the grill rack to keep them hot.
  • When removing foods from the grill, place them on a clean platter.
  • Never use the same platter and utensils you used for raw meat, poultry, or seafood.

Watch the time and outside temperature

Don’t let hot or cold food sit out in the “Danger Zone” (between 40 °F and 140 °F) for more than 2 hours – or 1 hour if the outdoor temperature is above 90 °F. If they do, throw them away.

Sato, Honda Win Thriller in St. Louis

Honda’s Takuma Sato celebrates his second NTT IndyCar Series victory of the season, after winning Saturday night’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at World Wide Technology Raceway near St. Louis, Missouri.

MADISON, Ill., Aug. 25, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ Recovering in the best possible fashion following an opening-lap crash last weekend at Pocono Raceway, Takuma Sato took advantage of an off-sequence pit strategy and a fast Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda to win the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 after a thrilling duel with Ed Carpenter in the final laps.

Honda’s Takuma Sato celebrates his second NTT IndyCar Series victory of the season, after winning Saturday night’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at World Wide Technology Raceway near St. Louis, Missouri.

A total of five caution flags and high tire wear led to numerous pit strategies during the 248-lap NTT IndyCar Series contest, the final oval race of the season, with some teams attempting to complete the race on just three stops, while others used various four-stop strategies. Rahal Letterman Lanigan used a four-stop plan to perfection, with Sato emerging in the lead on Lap 188.  On slightly fresher tires, Carpenter closed the gap to the leader during the final 24-lap run to the checkers, but Sato held on for a narrow, 0.0399-second victory.

For Sato, tonight’s win is his second of the year, following a road course victory at the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama in April, and his fifth career IndyCar Series win, which includes the 2017 Indianapolis 500.

The award for the most entertaining drive of the night, however, went to rookie Santino Ferrucci, who led a race-high 97 laps in his Dale Coyne Racing Honda and battled former series champions Tony Kanaan and Josef Newgarden for third in the closing laps. His fourth-place finish equals his best previous efforts this year from Pocono Raceway and Texas Motor Speedway.

Championship contender Alexander Rossi had a fast Honda throughout the race, but was one of the drivers caught out by pit strategy and ill-timed caution flags, relegating him to a disappointing 13th-place finish, one lap down to the leaders.

Defending series champion Scott Dixon’s hopes of a repeat title also took a hit tonight when debris penetrated his radiator on the opening lap. The resulting coolant leak forced Dixon’s Chip Ganassi Racing team to take the car behind the wall for extended repairs. He returned to the track near the midpoint of the 248-lap race and finished 20th, ending a streak of four consecutive first or second-place finishes.

Social media content and video links from this weekend’s IndyCar Series action from St. Louis are available on the HPD Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/HondaRacingHPD) and Twitter (https://twitter.com/HondaRacing_HPD) channels.  Produced by the Carolinas Production Group, YouTube video packages can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/HondaRacingHPDTV

Next
The NTT IndyCar Series continues its stretch run to the finish of the 2019 season and heads to the Pacific Northwest for next weekend’s penultimate race, and the September 1 Grand Prix of Portland at Portland International Raceway.

Quotes
Takuma Sato (Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda) Started fifth, finished first, second IndyCar win of 2019, fifth career victory: “For sure, we were a little lucky in terms of strategy, but we were fast all night. It was tough, I lost momentum [and multiple positions] twice tonight in traffic, but we made it happen tonight.  Big thank you to the Rahal Letterman Lanigan team, it’s an incredible team. I think our most important run was the one before our [second-to-last] pit stop. We were able to run at a very high pace throughout that run, and that kept us on the lead lap when we made our [final] stop. That was a very significant moment for us tonight.”

Santino Ferrucci (Dale Coyne Racing Honda) Started sixth, led 97 laps and finished fourth, equaling his season-best finishes from Pocono Raceway and Texas Motor Speedway: “We had a strong race car all night. We were able to run out front all night and, quite frankly, our race car was good enough to win this thing. At the end, I was really trying to get ‘TK’ [Tony Kanaan, for third place], but I nearly lost the car and got up in the ‘marbles’ and I did what I had to do to save the car. It was tough having to save fuel at the end [to make the finish], but all-in-all, I’m pretty happy to come home with another top-five finish.”

Steve Eriksen (Vice President and COO, Honda Performance Development) on tonight’s race, Honda’s seventh IndyCar Series race win of 2019: “It was great redemption for Takuma [Sato] following the challenges of last week, and a thrilling drive by Santino which kept us all on the edge of our seats. It’s great to add an oval track victory to our total for the season. Congratulations to our partner teams, and all the HPD associates who worked so hard to get us back to Victory Lane.”

New details shared on the Avengers Campus coming to both California and Paris, the transformation of Epcot, the expansion of Disney Cruise Line, and uniquely Disney experiences beyond the parks

ANAHEIM, California, Aug. 25, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Today at D23 Expo 2019, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Chairman Bob Chapek unveiled details on how Disney is bringing the next generation of immersive storytelling to life.

Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Chairman Bob Chapek (center left) was joined onstage by Make-A-Wish America President and CEO Richard Davis (center right) and several Wish kids whose lives have been touched by the power of a Disney wish, Aug. 25, 2019, at D23 Expo 2019 in Anaheim, Calif. Chapek debuted a heartwarming video demonstrating how some wishes are so powerful, they stay with you for a lifetime. (Paul Morse, photographer)

Chapek welcomed thousands of fans as he shared more about the ambitious plans in store for one of the most extraordinary periods of expansion in Disney history. From Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser and the timeless transformation of Epcot at Walt Disney World Resort, to the Avengers Campus coming to both Disneyland Resort and Disneyland Paris, to the Disney Wish arriving on the high seas in January 2022, there are more ways than ever for guests to be front and center in their favorite stories.

“It was Walt’s vision for our theme parks to be places where Disney stories come to life in amazing ways, and with the world’s most creative and talented team of artists and dreamers, there’s no shortage of inspiration,” Chapek said.

The audience was amazed as Disney Legend Dick Van Dyke joined Chapek onstage for a sweeping performance of “Step in Time” to announce the first Mary Poppins attraction at a Disney park, coming to Epcot. Live music continued to swell in the auditorium as award-winning composer Pinar Toprak performed her new anthem for Epcot on piano. Noted singer Jordan Fisher also surprised guests with a sneak peek of the musical score for Disneyland’s new parade.

The morning was full of exciting announcements on plans for Disney parks, resorts, cruise ships and beyond:

Super Heroes Assembling Around the World
Avengers Campus Coming to California and Paris
Guests can suit up alongside their favorite Super Heroes at the Avengers Campus, beginning in 2020 at Disney California Adventure park and later at Disneyland Paris. Both campuses will feature the first Disney ride-through attraction to feature Spider-Man. The attraction will give guests a taste of what it’s like to have actual super powers as they sling webs to help Spider-Man collect Spider-Bots that have run amok.

As Super Heroes continue to assemble at both campuses, one of the iconic buildings in California will be the Avengers Headquarters. The building will become the future entrance to a brand-new E-Ticket attraction where guests will fly alongside the Avengers in an epic adventure to Wakanda and beyond when it opens in the next phase of development.

Avengers Campus will feature Pym Test Kitchen where Pym Technologies is using the latest innovations to grow and shrink food.

Guests will also find heroic encounters throughout the campus, including Ant-Man and The Wasp, Doctor Strange, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Super Heroes from Wakanda and Asgard, and Iron Man. Guests may even catch a glimpse of the Avengers along the rooftops of the Avengers Headquarters.

At Disneyland Paris, guests can extend their adventures at Disney’s Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel, opening next summer. The hotel will celebrate 80 years of Marvel art and artists, with more than 300 stunning pieces on display. Rooms will include one-of-a-kind themed suites featuring favorite Super Heroes like Spider-Man, and guests can even meet these legends in a dedicated space.

A Star Wars Voyage Unlike Any Other
Guests are eagerly awaiting the immersive Star Wars vacation experience coming to Walt Disney World Resort. Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser will be a glamorous ship – the Halcyon – where every window features stellar views into space. Guests will embark together on a two-night adventure that includes special activities, incredible dining, and a “spaceport” day on Batuu at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, inviting guests even deeper into their own Star Wars stories.

Disney Cruise Line Magic On and Off the Ships
With three new ships coming to the Disney Cruise Line fleet, there’s so much to look forward to on the high seas. Today, Chapek announced the first of the three ships – the Disney Wish – will be delivered in late 2021 and will set sail in January 2022. Reflecting the theme of the vessel, Rapunzel will grace the stern, representing her character’s wish to see the world. D23 Expo attendees also got a first look at the ship’s three-story atrium, inspired by the beauty of an enchanted fairytale.

Guests can also look forward to a signature island experience that celebrates nature and the spirit and culture of The Bahamas at a new Disney port of call located on the breathtaking island of Eleuthera at a place called Lighthouse Point.

Timeless Transformation of Epcot
Chapek shared more of the ways Epcot will stay true to its original vision while bringing timeless Disney storytelling to life with the magic of possibility. The park will be unified with four neighborhoods that each celebrate a unique aspect of what makes Epcot so special:

World Showcase

  • World Showcase will welcome the first attraction inspired by Mary Poppins in Cherry Tree Lane, which will join the United Kingdom pavilion as an entirely new neighborhood.
  • Following the limited-time run of Epcot Forever, the new nighttime spectacular HarmonioUS will be the largest ever created for a Disney park, celebrating how the music of Disney inspires people the world over.
  • In summer 2020, the France pavilion will offer even more for guests to discover, including the much-anticipated attraction Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, as well as a delicious new restaurant called La Crêperie de Paris.
  • Also in the France pavilion, the classic Impressions de France film will be joined by an all-new “Beauty and the Beast Sing-Along” in January 2020.
  • “Canada Far and Wide in Circle-Vision 360” will debut in January 2020 in the Canada pavilion with new scenes and a new story.
  • In the China pavilion, “Wondrous China” will take guests on a spectacular journey across China, filmed and presented in a completely seamless 360-degree digital format.

World Celebration

  • The iconic Spaceship Earth will remain a voyage through time as the journey transforms with new scenes reflecting the universal nature of the human experience. A new guide and all-new narration will focus on the storytelling that brings people together.
  • A new pavilion will be the home base for Epcot’s signature festivals. It will provide a stunning view of World Showcase and an ideal spot to witness the park’s nighttime spectacular. This beautiful, three-level structure will have one of the most remarkable designs at any Disney park and will fast become a new icon for Epcot.
  • World Celebration will also feature breathtaking views at Dreamers Point, lush gardens, a wishing tree, an interactive new fountain and a statue celebrating the legacy of the original dreamer, Walt Disney.

World Nature

  • Journey of Water, Inspired by “Moana” will be a lush exploration trail where guests can meet and play with magical, living water.
  • The Land pavilion’s new film “Awesome Planet,” which showcases the spectacular beauty, diversity, and dynamic story of the planet, will begin welcoming guests in January 2020.

World Discovery

  • Guests will ride on a daring adventure featuring the first reverse launch into space on Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind. This thrilling, family-friendly attraction will feature a never-before-seen storytelling coaster that rotates to focus on the action, wherever it may be.
  • An expansion of the Mission: SPACE pavilion, the new restaurant Space 220 will open this winter as an out-of-this-world culinary experience with the celestial panorama of a space station, including daytime and nighttime views of Earth from 220 miles up.
  • PLAY! pavilion will open in time for the 50th Anniversary of Walt Disney World. In this interactive metropolis, guests will discover a city bursting with games, activities, and experiences that connect them with friends, family, and beloved Disney characters like never before.

50 Years of Walt Disney World Resort

Honda Announces New Passenger Front Airbag Design to Reduce Traffic Injuries and Fatalities in Wider Variety of Frontal Collisions

Honda today announced the development of an innovative new passenger front airbag technology designed to better protect occupants in a wide range of frontal collision scenarios, including angled crashes between vehicles or a vehicle and another object. Honda plans to begin applying its advanced airbag design to new products in the United States in 2020.

RAYMOND, Ohio, Aug. 23, 2019 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Honda today announced the development of an innovative new passenger front airbag technology designed to better protect occupants in a wide range of frontal collision scenarios, including angled crashes between vehicles or a vehicle and another object. Honda plans to begin applying its advanced airbag design to new products in the United States in 2020.

Honda today announced the development of an innovative new passenger front airbag technology designed to better protect occupants in a wide range of frontal collision scenarios, including angled crashes between vehicles or a vehicle and another object. Honda plans to begin applying its advanced airbag design to new products in the United States in 2020.

Development and testing of the new airbag was led by engineers at Honda R&D Americas, Inc. in Ohio in partnership with Autoliv, one of the company’s safety systems suppliers. The new design is based on Honda’s commitment to developing technologies that better protect vehicle occupants in a wide range of crash scenarios. In 2017, upwards of 37,000 people lost their lives on U.S. roadways as a result of motor vehicle traffic crashes, a slight decrease from the previous two years, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

“This new airbag technology represents Honda’s continuing effort to advance safety performance in a wider variety of crash scenarios and reflects the innovative thinking that our engineers are bringing to the challenge of reducing traffic injuries and fatalities,” said Jim Keller, President of Honda R&D Americas, Inc. “Guided by Honda’s ‘Safety for Everyone’ commitment, our engineers recognize that their work on this type of breakthrough safety technology will have  far-reaching effects on peoples’ lives for many years to come.”

New Airbag Design
Honda’s next-generation airbag is designed to reduce the potential for injuries that can occur in a wider variety of frontal impacts. It is particularly beneficial in angled frontal impacts in which lateral collision forces can cause an occupant’s head to rotate severely or slide off the airbag, increasing the chance of serious injury.

Unlike conventional airbag systems that rely on a single inflatable compartment, the new system utilizes four major components: three inflated compartments — a center chamber and two outward-projecting side chambers that create a wide base across the dash — along with a “sail panel” that stretches between the two side chambers at their outermost edge. Operating something like a baseball catcher’s mitt, the sail panel catches and decelerates the occupant’s head while also engaging the side chambers, pulling them inward to cradle and protect the head, mitigating the potential for injury.

This next-generation airbag technology is the result of Honda engineers’ study of real-world crash events along with research and testing conducted at the company’s advanced safety research center in Raymond, Ohio. Honda’s Ohio safety center is one the most sophisticated facilities for safety research, development and testing in the world and includes facilities dedicated to advanced crash simulations, pedestrian safety, collision testing and advanced restraint system development and tuning.

Honda Safety Leadership
Honda also is working to develop and deploy advanced passive safety and active safety systems that can reduce the severity of a collision or help avoid it entirely. In addition to passive safety systems such as airbags, seatbelts and advanced crash safety structures like the company’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, Honda is aggressively deploying its Honda Sensing® and AcuraWatch™ suites of safety and driver-assistive systems. Today, more than 2.5 million vehicles on U.S. roadways are utilizing these technologies, which are now standard or available on all 2019 and newer Honda models and standard on all 2019 and newer Acura sedans and SUVs.  The company has committed to making this broad suite of technologies standard on nearly all of its vehicles by 2022.

Combined, Acura and Honda have ten 2019 model-year vehicles – Acura: MDX, RDX1 and RLX; Honda: Accord,1 HR-V,2 Insight, CR-V,2 Odyssey,2 Pilot and Ridgeline2 — that earned a TOP SAFETY PICK or TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Further, all 2019 model-year Acura and Honda vehicles that have been fully tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) have earned a top 5-star Overall Vehicle Score, 15 model nameplates in total.

Honda Safety for Everyone Commitment
As a manufacturer of a wide variety of products including automobiles and powersports vehicles, Honda’s “Safety for Everyone” commitment is not limited only to the needs of car drivers and motorcycle riders, but extends to passengers, pedestrians, and occupants of all vehicles — in short, to everyone sharing the road. On the basis of this “Safety for Everyone” concept, Honda is committed to developing innovative safety technologies and equipping them to its automobiles, motorcycles and other powersports products toward Honda’s vision for a collision-free mobile society where its customers, and everyone sharing the road, can safely and confidently enjoy the freedom of mobility.

About Honda Safety Leadership
Based on its “Safety for Everyone” approach, Honda has a long history of leadership in the development and application of advanced technologies designed to enhance the safety of all road users, including automobile occupants, motorcycle riders and pedestrians.

Toward Honda’s goal of a “zero-collision society,” the company is broadly applying active safety and driver-assistive systems such as Honda Sensing® and AcuraWatch™. These technologies can significantly reduce the likelihood or severity of a collision and also serve as a bridge to highly automated vehicles of the future. Honda is targeting 2020 for the deployment of vehicles with highly automated highway driving capability and 2025 for the technological achievement of SAE Level 4 automated vehicles for personal use.
