California’s Nonfatal Worker Injuries and Illnesses Stable

Data Source: DIR, Director's Office of Policy, Research and Legislation

OAKLAND, California, Nov. 21, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) has posted California’s 2017 occupational injury and illness data on employer-reported injuries. According to the estimates provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (SOII), California had 466,600 nonfatal occupational injuries in 2017, a number stable from the prior year. The data posted includes detailed case and demographic data.

This chart shows nonfatal injuries/illnesses (in thousands) for all industries 2002–2017:

Data Source: DIR, Director's Office of Policy, Research and Legislation

Of the 466,600 nonfatal reportable job-related injuries and illnesses in 2017, 78% occurred in private industry and 22% in state and local government sectors. Both the statewide all-industry count of “lost time” cases (referred to in the survey as “days away from work, job transfer or restriction” or DART cases) and the number of “days away from work” cases (DAFW) remained steady .

By occupation, DAFW rates were highest in 2017 for cleaning and maintenance workers (311 cases per 10,000 workers), construction (246 cases) and transportation (225 cases).

Estimates for the California Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses are derived from a statistical sample of employers in the state. The SOII program is administered by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in cooperation with participating state agencies. Surveyed employers report data as required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Recordkeeping regulation (29 CFR 1904), using the OSHA 300 Log.

Additional background and methodological information regarding the BLS occupational safety and health statistics program can be found in Chapter 9 of the BLS Handbook of Methods. Employment data are 2015 annual averages from the BLS Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) program.

DIR protects and improves the health, safety and economic well-being of over 18 million wage earners, and helps their employers comply with state labor laws. U.S. Postal Service Letters FROM Santa Program Provides Santa’s Personalized Response to Your Child’s Letter

0
The Letters from Santa program adds to the excitement of Christmas and is ideal for interesting youngsters in letter writing, stamps and penmanship.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 26, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus — and the U.S. Postal Service can help you prove it when Santa replies to your child’s letter — complete with a North Pole postmark.

The Letters from Santa program adds to the excitement of Christmas and is ideal for interesting youngsters in letter writing, stamps and penmanship.

Here are the steps for your child to get a letter back from Santa:

  1. Have your child write a letter to Santa and place it in an envelope addressed to: Santa Claus, North Pole.
  2. Later, when alone, open the envelope and write a personalized response.
  3. Insert the response letter into an envelope and address it to the child.
  4. Add the return address: SANTA, NORTH POLE, to the envelope.
  5. Affix a First-Class Mail stamp to the envelope, such as one of the new holiday stamps.
  6. Place the complete envelope into a larger envelope — preferably a Priority Mail Flat Rate envelope — with appropriate postage and address it to:

    North Pole Postmark
    Postmaster
    4141 Postmark Drive
    Anchorage, AK 99530-9998

“Letters from Santa” must be received by the Anchorage, AK, postmaster no later than Dec. 15. Santa’s helpers at the Postal Service will take care of the rest.

Be sure to share the experience on social media using #LettersFromSanta.

Tips

  • To save paper, write Santa’s response on the back of your child’s letter. If you keep them together, your child will also be able to recall what he or she wrote.
  • When responding as Santa, make the response as personal as possible by highlighting your child’s accomplishments over the past year, for example, helping around the house, receiving good grades in a particular subject at school or participating in community service activities.
  • This is a great activity to do at Thanksgiving that the whole family can enjoy, including parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and other caregivers.

The Letters from Santa program adds to the excitement of Christmas and is ideal to interest children in letter writing, stamps and penmanship.

A large variety of holiday themed postage stamps is available for purchase at Post Offices locations, online at usps.com and by toll-free phone order at 1-800-STAMP-24 (1-800-782-6724).

Holiday Without Borders — Toys for Children in Detention Centers

0

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, Nov. 26, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — According to CBS News, there are 12,800 children in detention centers across the United States as of September 2018. That number increased from 2,400 children in May 2017 and it shows no signs of slowing down. That means that this year children will be spending their holidays in immigration centers.

US Immigration Bonds has decided to do something to bring joy to these children, because every child deserves a happy holiday. That’s why the company created the Holiday Without Borders initiative, an immigration charity drive to bring joy by delivering toys for children in detention centers.

The idea is the brainchild of Ms. Sanchez. While at church, she saw all the letters to Santa that children in detention center had written in years past. She asked company owners Richard and Margy Wolf for help, and they all decided that buying toys for children in detention centers is the best way to make their holiday more bearable. We want to bring a bit of hope, a bit of light a small amount of the holiday cheer to children who are stuck in detention centers in the U.S.A.

Our goal is to reach $20,000. Please donate what you can to brighten up the holidays for these kids and to send them toys that will make their entire holiday a little better.

If you have any questions about this immigration charity drive, please reach out to directly: 800-225-2587.

Here is a link to our GoFundMe page that details this initiative:  https://www.gofundme.com/holidaywithoutborders

  • Starts October 30
  • Ends December 10 (tentatively)
  • Children are as young as 3 years old

MoneyGram Warns Consumers to Stay Alert for Three Common Scams on Cyber Monday

0
MoneyGram Logo

DALLAS, Nov. 26, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — As shoppers gear up for the holidays, cybercriminals are making preparations to steal their money. Online fraud attempts are expected to increase 14%* during the peak of the 2018 holiday shopping season. MoneyGram (NASDAQ:MGI), a leading financial technology company, is warning consumers to stay alert for some of the most common online scams this season.

Online Shopping
Fraudsters create fake websites, ads, and social media posts offering hot ticket items at a huge discount. Shoppers who fall for the scam may send their money but never receive the item. Before buying, shoppers should check reviews and make sure the retailer is legitimate.

Fake Charity
Crooks take advantage of consumers’ giving spirit during the holiday season by creating phony charities. They often contact their victims via email, text or social media. The fake charity’s name and its website may sound or look similar to other well-known charitable organizations. Before donating, consumers should confirm that the charity is legitimate at Give.org

Unusual Forms of Payment
Criminals don’t want to leave a paper trail so they’ll often ask for money that cannot be traced. Consumers should walk away from a purchase or donation if they are asked to pay with a wire transfer, a prepaid debit card or through a third party. These forms of payment are like paying with cash and the money cannot be recovered once it is gone.

“Protecting our customers from fraud is MoneyGram’s top priority. Raising awareness about the tricks that scam artists use to steal their hard-earned money is just one of many steps we take to help guard consumers from fraudsters. Our industry-leading compliance program and cutting-edge technology enables us to detect and prevent more than $25 million of suspected fraudulent activity every month. I am proud to say that today our consumer fraud reports are at a seven-year low,” said Andy Villareal, MoneyGram’s chief compliance officer.

MoneyGram is the founder of ScamAwareness.org, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public about common scams. Consumers can learn more by visiting  scamawareness.org.

Proman Increases Trinidad and Tobago’s Natural Gas Supply to Petrochemical Plants

0

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago, Nov. 21, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — DeNovo Energy Limited (“DeNovo”), a subsidiary of the Proman Group (“Proman”), has today announced the first commercial supply of gas from the Iguana Field in Block 1(a), which will deliver 80 million cubic feet of gas per day once fully operational. DeNovo, which became the operator of the field in 2016, fast-tracked the project delivery, safely executing this development using 2.6 million man-hours, with over 73% local content, in just under three years.

The project was delivered in line with Proman’s strategy for ensuring security of gas supply and sustainability in Trinidad and Tobago’s Energy Industry. Proman invested USD 250 million in DeNovo in 2015, as the first downstream group to invest in the upstream sector in Trinidad and Tobago. A global leader in petrochemicals, Proman has been operating in Trinidad and Tobago since 1984 and owns and operates 14 petrochemical plants on the Point Lisas Industrial Estate in Trinidad, amounting to more than 50% of the installed petrochemical capacity. Through this investment, Proman has been able to develop stranded pools of gas to deliver to an already matured downstream industry. The Iguana Field is DeNovo’s first stranded gas field development, and signals a significant positive evolution in the operating capabilities within the Trinidad and Tobago energy industry as the DeNovo model provides a quick and tested way of increasing natural gas production.

Proman Chief Executive David Cassidy said, “After 30 years of excelling in the Downstream sector, we decided to invest in a local Upstream company at a time when gas curtailments seriously impaired Trinidad and Tobago’s global competitiveness. The Iguana field development is a perfect example of global collaboration and the diverse competencies within the Proman Group, as DeNovo was supported by other Proman companies to deliver this project in record time to a world-class standard. I would like to express my thanks to the expert teams at DeNovo, Proman AG (Trinidad) Ltd, Eurotecnica Contractors and Engineers S.p.A, and Industrial Plant Services Limited (IPSL) for their outstanding work. Together we have achieved a significant first for Trinidad and Tobago, demonstrating Proman’s commitment to enhancing the competitiveness of the local petrochemical sector, increasing the security of gas supply in the country, and leading a sustainable evolution in the local Energy Industry.”

Speaking of Proman’s involvement, DeNovo CEO Joel Pemberton said, “Proman has proven the great potential from natural gas still exists in Trinidad and Tobago despite the challenges faced by the local Energy Industry. Proman was the first company to make a significant investment in the local upstream, and supported DeNovo in the midst of a global energy crisis, and when gas shortages threatened petrochemical operations in Trinidad and Tobago. This investment is part of Proman’s multi-billion-dollar operation in the country, supporting hundreds of skilled jobs and supporting business, and contributing significantly to Trinidad and Tobago’s economic prosperity and Energy Industry sustainability.”

Cassidy characterised Proman’s investment in the development as “taking the initiative.” He went on to say, “We continue to work with all stakeholders to ensure that Trinidad and Tobago remains a competitive and viable place to produce petrochemicals, and that the Energy Industry can be sustainable and secure in the short and long terms.”

The announcement comes at a time when Proman has significantly scaled up its global operations partly through its controlling stake in Consolidated Energy Limited and the recent start-up of the Natgasoline plant, the United States’ largest methanol production facility, in Beaumont, Texas.

Spaghetti squash stuffed with ginger-garlic beef and Harissa Roasted spaghetti squash

NEW YORK and MADRID, Nov. 22, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Olive Oils from Spain’s ambassador, Seamus Mullen, introduces two healthy alternatives to the traditional Thanksgiving turkey. Thanksgiving is viewed as a quintessential family party in the US. The ritual of sharing a table around a dish of food with loved ones and giving thanks for all the good that was received during the year deserves a different and healthy celebration. The use of ‘liquid gold’, the healthiest fat, will help individuals to enjoy healthier, tastier and nicer textures at dinner. Olive Oil is the guest that cannot be missing on tables on such an important day. These two meals are Spaghetti squash stuffed with ginger-garlic beef and Harissa Roasted spaghetti squash. The recipes for these can be found here.

A gastronomic alternative for a healthier Thanksgiving

Seamus Mullen has been making Extra Virgin Olive Oils the base of his kitchen for more than 25 years. “Over the years I have fallen in love with the Olive Oils from Spain, both for its taste and for its health benefits, to such an extent that it has become an integral part of Thanksgiving meals that I prepare,” says Seamus Mullen, the ambassador of Olive Oils in the US.

“On this important date, I like to roast vegetables, make autumn soups, skip the turkey and roast some chickens or even cook fish.” Chef Mullen is not interested in heavy food, so he proposes two healthy dishes made with Olive Oils (Spaghetti squash stuffed with ginger-garlic beef and Harissa Roasted spaghetti squash). He also advises to start with a sweet pumpkin soup with ginger, cinnamon, roasted garlic and sage made with Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

About Olive Oils from Spain

Olive Oils from Spain is the promotional brand of the Interprofessional Spanish Olive Oil, a non-profit organization, formed in turn by all the representative entities of the Spanish olive oil sector, whose main objective is the dissemination of the product throughout the world.
